Gateway to the Internet . Web sites selected by University of Iowa librarians.
  • Reference categories of interest include a "Newspapers" section, as well as an "Indexes" section. These areas list sources only available to paying subscribers such as the University of Iowa. One new major source is EBSCOHost , featuring full-text for over 1,000 journals, abstracts and indexing for over 3,100 scholarly journals.
Librarians' Index to the Internet has an excellent "World Cultures" subject area, with individual lists of links for six separate world regions. WWW Virtual Library: Geography . Another useful starting point. You may wish to end up at one of the globally-oriented sections of GeographyAbout.com Yahoo! Regional . Links to states, countries, regions, and geography. Geography World . Links to a wide range of globally-based resources from a high school teacher in Pennsylvania. Use your evaluation skills with this web site. Some web sites for foreign countries should be examined carefully for authorship, purpose, etc.

T his concentration focuses on the aspects of geography that relate to different cultures, with an emphasis on cultural origins and movement and the cultural characteristics of regions (e.g., language, religion, ethnicity, politics, historical development, agricultural methods, settlement patterns, and quality of life). Cultural ecologythe ways in which humans have interacted with their cultural and natural environment at various timesis also included. There is a strong relationship between cultural geography, anthropology, and archaeology.
Cultural geographers often try to reconstruct past environments, and to do so they must be equally skilled in library research, field observation, and the interpretation of cultural artifacts. Historical geographers are interested in recreating the geography of past times. In doing this, they work closely with historians and archivists, contributing much to the understanding of present-day geography.
Courses in this area include historical geography, cultural geography, cultural ecology, human geography, human use of the earth, and humanity and nature. Many cultural and human geographers are area specialists as well, which means that they focus their attention on a specific region, such as Latin America, Europe, or Asia. Because they often carry out field observation in other countries, they will usually need good foreign-language backgrounds.

GEOS264 Geographic Information systems is of value to all students in human geography,as well as Australians and their Environment, a general education unit
http://handbook.mq.edu.au/p3/pt3h_282.htm
Department of Human Geography
The Department of Human Geography offers units for the following pass and honours degrees:
  • Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Arts in Geographic Information Systems Bachelor of Arts in Population Studies Bachelor of Environmental Management Bachelor of Health Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Social Science.
Note also that the BSc and BA and Environmental Management degrees can be combined with other qualifications such as the Diploma of Education (DipEd) and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Human geography is concerned with the spatial expression of human activities, and their relationships with, and the planning and management of, human and physical environments. It can be studied as part of the broad field of human and physical geography, as a coherent course of study in its own right, or as part of a major in resource and environmental management. In addition, human geography can be studied with other units leading to coherencies including Population Studies and Geographic Information Systems. Students majoring in human geography can also include units from a range of other disciplines, including anthropology, computing, cultural studies, demography, economics, history, law, politics, sociology and statistics. Employment opportunities for human geographers are found in resource management and environmental planning, social and urban planning, tourism, administration, research and teaching. Students of the social sciences are advised to study elementary statistics and computing, and they should also consider basic units in fields such as politics, history, demography, economics, anthropology and sociology. Those studying resource and environmental management may need to enrol in both science and social science units outside of geography, though the balance will depend on their interests.

A Major In Geography General Geography Option BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The General Geography option is a 42-43 credit hour track for those wishing to pursue a rigorous training in modern geography without specializing in the human or physical side of the discipline. Students are required to take 15-16 hours from the geography core courses : these are Geography 101 (Geography of Developing Countries), Geography 102 (Weather and Climate), Geography 103 (Earth’s Physical Systems), Geography 104 (Social and Cultural Geography), and Geography 271 (Spatial Analysis). They may select any three from Geog 101, Geog 102, Geog 103, and Geog 104, but must take Geog 271 (Spatial Analysis); they are also strongly encouraged to take Geography 373 (Cartography). Selection from the core courses will provide students with a broad-based introduction to a selection of the principal thematic issues in modern geography, as well as provide them with instruction in contemporary methodological approaches within the discipline. Thereafter, students must select a further 15 credit hours in geography drawn from the department’s 200 and 300 level course offerings : 6 hours of which must be taken at the 300 level. In addition to the required geography course selections, students must take a further

Tel: 492.6760; E-Mail: adh@colorado.edu Requirements Schedule Regional geography seeks to understand the complex interrelationships of physical and human systems that characterize important parts of Earths surface. This course deals with the regional geography of Middle America, which includes Mexico, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean. Middle America, as defined here, is a subregion of the larger Latin America, which includes Middle America and South America. The other subregion of Latin America is covered in the follow-up course, GEOG 4812, Environment and Development in South America. The present course will also provide you with a background for more specialized courses on Latin American cultures, economics, politics, and arts. It will add a valuable multidisciplinary dimension to the program of the International Affairs major and an important regional component in the program of the Geography major. Despite the fact that Middle America is our Western Hemisphere neighbor, we North Americans know very little about it. Our images are often influenced by biases and stereotypes. For example, we overgeneralize about the poverty, backwardness, and authoritarianism of the region. An important objective of this course is to have you learn that Middle Americas regional unity is based largely upon cultural heritage and historical experience, but that in terms of environment, politics, and economic development, the region is highly diverse.

Insights from the Field: Content Standards
The concepts and skills presented in this guide are linked to the nationally recognized curriculum content standards listed below.
National Geography Standards
The World in Spatial Terms
Geography is the study of the relationships between people, places, and environments by mapping information about them into a spatial context. The geographically-informed person knows and understands:
  • How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools (e.g., charts and graphs), and technologies to acquire, process and report information from a spatial perspective.
  • How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on the Earth's surface.
Human Systems
People are central to geography in that human activities help shape Earth's surface, human settlements and structures are part of Earth's surface, and humans compete for control of Earth's surface. The geographically-informed person knows and understands:
  • The characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth's cultural mosaics.

Information for Environmental Studies and Environmental Science Students Considering a Second Major in Geography Geography is an excellent second field for Environmental Studies and Environmental Science majors because it also offers you a grounding in the physical and human systems within which environmental issues are situated in a larger global context. The geography major also allows you to specialize in an Environmental Geography track to help fine tune your understanding of the interactions of Earth’s physical and human systems. Consider these opportunities:
  • All General Education, Foreign Language, and Math requirements are the same for the two majors. All lower division classes required for the Geography major also count toward your ES major or minor. Y ou may apply any of the following Geography courses to complete your ES degree:
