    CHARLES GUITEAU COLLECTION
The Charles J. Guiteau Collection consists of correspondence, affidavits and printed material by and about Guiteau, the notorious attorney who assassinated U.S. President James Abram Garfield on July 2, 1881. The assassination resulted in one of the most celebrated American "insanity trials" of the nineteenth century, which became something of a legal milestone in the judgement of the criminally insane. Over the decades, most authorities, including medical professionals, have agreed that Guiteau suffered from insanity. Charles E. Rosenberg, author of "The Trial of the Assassin Guiteau - Psychiatry and Law in the Gilded Age" (1968), wrote of the case: "Within a dozen years of Guiteau's execution, few interested pysicians doubted that he had been insane, indeed chronically and obviously so. Those harshest in their judgment did not hesitate to call the trial a miscarriage of justice... Charles Julius Guiteau was born on September 8, 1841, in Freeport, Illinois, the fourth of six children of Luther Wilson Guiteau and Jane Howe. The latter died when Charles was quite young, on September 25, 1848. Luther Guiteau then remarried.

Name: James Garfield (1831 - 1881) Categories: President of the USA US Congressman from Ohio Burial Location: Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. See the Death in Office Rule for Presidential Monuments Mike's Notes: Arriving at the James Garfield Monument, I found that the doors to the interior of the mausoleum were locked. Being the inquisitive type that I am, I went to the cemetery office and asked them if the doors are ever unlocked. The lady said that the mausoleum was closed for the winter. Since it was mid-March, I asked her when winter was going to be over. She said that they would be opening the doors the following Monday (I believe this was Thursday that I was there). I told the lady that I was only there for one day, and I didn't know when I would get back to see the inside again. Her sarcastic answer: "Well, I'll tell Mr. Garfield you stopped by." So, if you're ever in Cleveland and decide to visit Lake View Cemetery, give the office staff a hard time for me! Fortunately, about 2 years later, I had the opportunity to return to the grave, and this time the mausoleum was open, so I was able to get lots of nice pictures.

W ASHINGTON, DC Guiteau was crazed, but that courtroom utterance was rational and accurate. His death included all of the worst elements that could be found in a presidential medical crisis: "Garfield's death," states the 1987 book Medical Cover-Ups in the White House, "included all of the worst elements that could be found in a presidential medical crisis: faulty diagnosis, grossly improper treatment, prideful bickering among doctors and a massive cover-up of the truth before and after death." "In short, Garfield never had a chance." The second president to be assassinated, once a professor of Greek and Latin, Garfield served a brief term of office: only two hundred days. On July 2, 1881, he arrived at the Washington railroad depot to depart for a reunion at his alma mater, Williams College in Massachusetts, where he had also taught and served as its president.
The wounded president exclaimed, "My God, what is this?" and collapsed to the floor. Garfield remained fully conscious, though in traumatic shock. His pulse alternately raced and grew feeble, and his breathing became shallow. He was rushed to the White House, where doctors discovered that one bullet had grazed his arm but the other had lodged internally. Though the president complained of numbness of the legs and feet, which would suggest damage to the spinal cord, several of the physicians believed the troubling bullet rested in the abdomen. As the doctors argued over the bullet's location and what to do about it, Garfield lingered for eighty days, conducting state business from his bed. But the lodged bullet was rapidly poisoning his blood. Within a month the once robust, 210-pound president was down to an emaciated 130 pounds, with new infections throughout his lungs. With Washington's summer heat soaring to almost a hundred degrees, Garfield was kept relatively comfortable by a primitive "air cooling" system: rows of cotton towels dampened by ice water that was evaporated by fans. The blood poisoning and related infections finally claimed his life on September 19.

    Biography

James Abram Garfield, (1831-1881), 20th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Four months after taking office he was wounded fatally by an assassin's bullet. His administration is remembered for a struggle over patronage, exposure of the Star Route frauds, and the beginnings of a friendlier policy toward Latin America. Had Garfield never been president his distinguished service in the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES would have earned him a place in American history. Early Life and Career James Abram Garfield was born in a log cabin near Cleveland, Ohio, on Nov. 19, 1831, the youngest of five children of Abram and Eliza Ballou Garfield. Raised by his mother, who was widowed in 1833, James grew up in poverty. Though bright and anxious to learn, he turned 17 with but little schooling. In 1848 he struck out on his own and worked on a canal boat, but about six weeks later he returned home seriously ill. While convalescing he decided to get an education. For the next decade religion and academic life occupied Garfield. He attended a seminary, taught in district schools, and from 1851 to 1854 studied and taught at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, now Hiram College. Through these years Garfield was an introspective person with narrow views and a small circle of friends. Deeply religious, he zealously embraced and preached the doctrines of the Disciples of Christ. From the Eclectic, a Disciple school, he entered Williams College. He graduated with honors in 1856.

    Anatifacts
    President James Garfield's Vertebrae

On the morning of July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau fired two shots at President James Garfield as he entered a Washington, DC train station. One shot grazed Garfield's hand. The second entered the President's spine near the right 11th rib but did not exit.
    (NCP 1863)
The x-ray, which would easily have pinpointed the bullet's location, had not yet been discovered. So the President's physicians did what all competent physicians had routinely done in such cases. They probed the entry wound with special instruments designed for that purpose - but without success. The bullet remained lost inside the President. Medical historians believe Garfield could have survived his injury if the attending physicians had washed their hands and used sterile instruments. In 1881, though, such antisepsis techniques were still under debate within the American medical profession.
(AFIP 71787) President Garfield died on September 19 of complications from his injuries. Army Medical Museum pathologists removed these vertebrae (the 12th thoracic and 1st and 2nd lumbar) at autopsy to document the wound and resulting infection. The plastic probe shows the path of the bullet.

Garfield purchased the nine room dilapidated farmhouse with outbuildings in 1876. In 1880, he enveloped the original structure, adding eleven rooms to accommodate his large family. It was at this time that Garfield added the front porch, which became nationally known during his presidential campaign. Reporters named the home "Lawnfield" because of the wide expanse of lawn on which they literally camped out during the campaign. Following his death in 1881, Lucretia, his widow, added the memorial library and vault to store his personal letters and papers, as well as the books he treasured. This library set the precedent for Presidents to have libraries built in their honor. Lucretia remodeled the home in 1904, and the family retained ownership of the structure until 1936, when it was donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society by Garfield's children. Congress authorized the property as a National Historic Site on December 28, 1980. Other structures on the 7.82 acre site include the carriage house (recently rehabilitated into a visitor center), the campaign office, the 75-foot tall pump house/windmill (also recently restored), gas holder, granary, barn, and chicken coop with run. A tenant house completes the list.
