    Combinatorial Games
    Mathematicians use the words "game theory" in two different senses. The more common sense of the word includes things like the Prisoner's Dilemma, poker, the New York Stock Exchange, or other "imperfect-information" games. Research in this type of game theory makes a lots of money for a lot of people, and has even resulted in a few Nobel prizes. An introductory sketch is available at Drexel University. Those aren't the kind of mathematical games I like. Combinatorial game theory tries to analyze the outcomes of "perfect-information" games like Nim and Tic-tac-toe. More difficult real-world examples are Hex, Reversi, Mancala, Checkers, Chess, Shogi, and Go. Nancy Casey has a

What if you were sitting in front of the television watching the nightly news, and the weather forecaster came on. "Good evening," he says. "Tonight's weather will be clear and cool. Tomorrow it will rain frogs and toads." He must be playing a joke, you think, or he's made a goofy mistake. After all, frogs and toads can't fall out of the sky. That's impossible! But the truth is that while frog and toad rainstorms are extremely rare, they can actually happen. One of these rare events is described in the August 3, 1883 edition of the Decatur Daily Republican. "Cairo, Illinois, August 3 - Early yesterday morning the decks of the steamers Success and Elliot, moored at the Mississippi levee, were observed to be literally covered with small green frogs about an inch in length, which came down with a drenching rain which prevailed during the night. Spars, lines, trees and fences were literally alive with the slimy things, while the lights from the watchmen's lanterns were obscured by the singular visitation. The phenomenon, while not entirely unknown, has never been explained, and is causing considerable comment." Another report about one of these bizarre events appeared in Scientific American magazine, dated July 12, 1873. It states, "A shower of frogs, which darkened the air and covered the ground for a long distance, is the reported result of a recent rainstorm at Kansas City, Missouri." Here is an event which no forecaster predicted ahead of time. And just think - it took place right here in Missouri.

Interest in amphibians continues to rise as people become more aware of this fascinating group of animals. To the uninitiated all frogs may look alike; ditto for salamanders (in the same manner that beginning birders are overwhelmed by the immense variety of small brown birds!). One of the purposes of this CHECKLIST and online IDENTIFICATION GUIDE is to help you learn what species exist in North America (north of Mexico). Identification Guide
The checklist is also accompanied by a growing identification guide An advantage that the herpetologist has over the ornithologist is that his or her study animal can often be approached quite closely for a good look or photo, or even to be captured. However, before attempting to capture any animals make sure that you know what species are protected by law ! Also, keep in mind that being captured on film is far less stressful than being physically captured, and that a good photo often suffices for identification purposes. Nevertheless, some species must be caught for positive identification. If this is necessary make sure you have the proper equipment and training (if you have no experience in this find someone that can teach you).

Toads and frogs often conjure up thoughts of wet places misty swamps and enchanted nights when mysterious calls rise from the water's edge. Although wetlands are crucial to their life cycle, these amphibians don't live exclusively in water. They often emerge from their aquatic homes to become land dwellers. Some hardy toads and frogs even spend their entire winter in the leaf litter of a forest floor or in a deep burrow below the frost line of an open grassland. Toads and frogs are collectively known as anuranstailless amphibians. The 14 species of toads and frogs found in Minnesota are grouped into three families: toads, treefrogs, and true frogs. All species within each family share similar features, but each individual species has its own unique breeding call, survival strategy, and environmental niche. Over thousands of years, Minnesota's toads and frogs have adapted to survive a wide range of conditions. By learning more about these amphibians, their habitats, and their survival methods, Minnesotans can better appreciate why we need to conserve the wetlands, grasslands, and forests where these fascinating animals live. Their presence is an indication that we are doing a good job of preserving wetland habitat and water quality.
