Paris 1924... Uruguay's Football Selection obtained the Gold Medal in the l924 7th. Olympic Games held in Paris, France. The National Administration of Posts issues a two-stamp series with complementary motives to commemorate the 75th. Anniversary of the first Olympic Games in which an Uruguayan Football Selection took part. "The era of the sprot for masses" In l924 the FIFA organized a football tournament for the first time within the framework of the Olympic Games. Twenty-two selections - a record number at that moment - entered for the competition. Two of them - USA's and Uruguay's - came from overseas. Fooball between the wars. The "happy days". A flourishing age, when the first football stars appeared. For the first time people attended the stadiums in unexpected numbers - in Paris l924 there were thousands exceeding the stadiums capacity - : the era of the "sport for masses" started.
Football was developing in Europe in those days, and a phenomenon- that would last ever since- was starting: the friutful rivalry between Europe and South America in the domain of football.

In Austria, skiing is king Posted: Friday January 18, 2002 12:00 PM
To reach the Austrian town of Kitzbuehel, you exit the A12 Autobahn at Worgl and find Route 170, a two-lane highway that meanders for nearly 20 miles through a wonderland of quaint villages, each with its own Skischule, each with its own small chairlift, T-bar or rope tow, each with several shops in which to buy, rent or tune skis. In all of these villages, the streets are jammed with skiers. Children and their parents, teenagers and their buds, senior citizens. The sample cuts across every demographic. They can be seen clomping through the center of town in ski boots, carrying a pair of Volkls or Atomics over their shoulders, poles in their free hands. There are hillsides that have no lift, yet the pristine white snow is carved by distinctive S turns. Turns out that Austrians commonly drive up narrow roads to the back side of hills that have no lift, then ski down the front. Once. There are many ways to measure a nation's passion for sport. In the United States, Starter jackets and replica jerseys are a good indication. To be a grown man wearing a $250

    Tug-of-war

Tug-of-war was on the Olympic programme in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain.
    Golf
Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme.
Rugby Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.
