FACT. . .
Fluoride Is A Carcinogen Fluoride was found to be an equivocal carcinogen by the National Cancer Institute Toxicological Program. Further studies by the New Jersey Department of Health have now confirmed a 6.9 fold increase in bone cancer in young males. Earlier studies had found a 5% increase in all types of cancers in fluoridated communities. FACT. . .

Fluoride Increases Infertility Infertility in women was found to increase with water fluoridation. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists reported a close correlation between decreasing total fertility rates in women between ages of 10 and 49, and increasing fluoride levels. They also reported that a review of all of the animal studies done to date shows that fluoride adversely affects fertility in most animal species.

The impact of fluoride on health
J Am Diet Assoc.
Abstract
Fluoride is an important element for mineralization of body tissues. The use of topical and systemic fluoride for oral health has resulted in major reductions in dental caries and its associated disability. Fluoridation of public water supplies has been endorsed by over 90 professional health organizations as the most effective dental public health measure in existence. Still, about half of the US population fails to receive the maximum benefits possible from community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride products. Fluoride also plays a role in bone health. The role of high doses of fluoride for prevention of osteoporosis is undergoing active study and is considered experimental at this point. Dietetics professionals should routinely monitor and promote the use of systemic and topical fluorides, especially in children and adolescents. The American Dietetic Association strongly reaffirms its endorsement of the use of systemic and topical fluorides, including water fluoridation, at appropriate levels of intake, as an important public health measure. However, clients should be cautioned that experimental use of high intakes of fluoride should be avoided unless they are participating in clinical trials. J Am Diet Assoc. 2000;100:1208-1213.

"FLUORIDE DANGERS TO THE THYROID" > Page
What are the Thyroid-Specific Concerns?
Is fluoride in part the reason for near epidemic levels of hypothyroidism in the United States? Some experts and researchers believe this is the case.
Fluoride had been used for decades as an effective anti-thyroid medication to treat hyperthyroidism and was frequently used at levels below the current "optimal" intake of 1 mg/day. This is due to the ability of fluoride to mimic the action of thyrotropin (TSH). It makes sense, then that out of the over 150 symptoms and associations of hypothyroidism , almost all are also symptoms of fluoride poisoning.
Researcher and advocate Andreas Schuld has also found that excess of fluoride correlates with other thyroid-related issues such as iodine deficiency. Fluoride and iodine, both being members of the halogens group of atoms, have an antagonistic relationship. When there is excess of fluoride in the body it can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. It is possible that iodine deficiency, which is the most common cause of brain damage and mental disability in the world, could be lessened by simply cutting back on the use of fluoride.

The Associate Committee on Scientific Criteria for Environmental Quality was established by the National Research Council of Canada in response to a mandate provided by the Federal Government to develop scientific guidelines for defining the quality of the environment. The concern of the NRC Associate Committee is strictly with scientific criteria. Pollution standards and objectives are the responsibility of the regulatory authorities and are set for the purpose of pollution control. These may be based on scientific criteria starting point but they also take into account the optimal socioeconomic impact of proposed measures as well as the state of existing technology.
The Associate Committee's program includes the evaluation of available information on the probability of effects of contaminants on receptors together with the related fundamental principles and scientific knowledge. In this work particular attention is directed to receptors and contaminants (and their interactions) important to Canada. This Canadian approach is necessary because evaluations made in other countries or regions will not always be applicable to the particular circumstances prevailing in Canada.
Members of the Associate Committee, its Subcommittees and Expert Panels, serve voluntarily and are selected for their individual competence and relevant experience with due consideration for a balance among all sectors in Canada. Responsibility for the quality of study documents rests with the Associate Committee. Each report is carefully reviewed according to a multi-stage procedure established and monitored by the National Research Council of Canada in order to preserve objectivity in presentation of the scientific knowledge. Publication and distribution of the report are undertaken only after completion of this review process.

Press Release WHO/14-15 February 1994
WHO Advocates Affordable Fluoride Toothpastes for the Developing Countries
Fluoride toothpaste is now the most widely used method of prevention in the world, but it cost remains a deterrent for many of the world's poorer populations. This was the conclusion reached by a WHO expert Committee meeting a few month before this year's World Health Day, on 7 April, which will focus on oral health. Among measures to promote greater access to these toothpastes, the Committee proposed exemption from duties and taxation, since fluorides are added for the sake of public health and not for cosmetic purposes.
According to data presented at a recent meeting in Geneva, more than 800 million people throughout the world now benefits from fluorides, the most common natural occurring fluoride chemical compounds, as a means of controlling caries and maintaining oral health. This is mostly achieved through the fluoridation of water for (210 million people), salt (50 million) or toothpaste (450 million). Ground water in its natural condition almost always contains fluoride, but in concentrations that vary widely from one place to another.
Fluoride has been known for several decades to be effective against dental caries, and it acts in several ways. When present in dental plaque and saliva, it hastens the remineralization of incipient enamel lesions before cavities can become established. It also interferes with glycolysis, the process by which bacteria metabolize sugars to produce acid. In higher concentrations, it has a bacterial effect and when ingested during the period of tooth development, fluoride is thought to make the enamel more resistant to later acid attacks.

http://www.umanitoba.ca/outreach/wisdomtooth/fluoride.htm
Fluoride Dental decay is a common disease in North America. One way to help prevent this disease from occurring is through the use of fluoride. Fluoride helps harden the tooth enamel and make it more resistant to tooth decay. A small cavity can be stopped and even reversed by the remineralization process enhanced by fluoride. Fluoride can be delivered to the teeth in 2 ways; topically (direct contact on the teeth) and systemically (enters the blood stream).
Systemic Fluoride Systemic fluoride is delivered to the tooth surface via the bloodstream. Systemic fluoride can be derived from a food source, water source, or dietary supplements ( pill, tablet, lozenge, drop ). Fluoridated water is an effective way to reduce the problem of dental decay. It has been shown that fluoridated water and dietary supplements can reduce up to 60 % of tooth decay. Some water supplies already naturally contain fluoride, for others, fluoride is intentionally added to the water supply. Some communities have no fluoride in their water. Other communities are unaware of this option. If you would like to know if your community's water supply contains fluoride, call your local water or health department.

Fluoride in water: An overview Throughout many parts of the world, high concentrations of fluoride occurring naturally in groundwater and coal have caused widespread fluorosis - a serious bone disease - among local populations. We purposely fluoridate a range of everyday products, notably toothpaste and drinking water, because for decades we have believed that fluoride in small doses has no adverse effects on health to offset its proven benefits in preventing dental decay. But more and more scientists are now seriously questioning the benefits of fluoride, even in small amounts. This paper gives a brief introduction to fluoride issues, particularly as they relate to the quality of drinking water. Basic facts about fluoride
Fluoride exists fairly abundantly in the earth's crust and can enter groundwater by natural processes; the soil at the foot of mountains is particularly likely to be high in fluoride from the weathering and leaching of bedrock with a high fluoride content. According to 1984 guidelines published by the World Health Organization (WHO) , fluoride is an effective agent for preventing dental caries if taken in 'optimal' amounts. But a single 'optimal' level for daily intake cannot be agreed because the nutritional status of individuals, which varies greatly, influences the rate at which fluoride is absorbed by the body. A diet poor in calcium, for example, increases the body's retention of fluoride.

Dare To Think
. . . a message about fluoride
by Darlene Sherrell
Just in time for Children's Dental Health Month, (February 1997) the Reader's Digest published HOW HONEST ARE DENTISTS?, by William Ecenbarger, winner of the George Polk Award for Investigative Journalism. The article revealed that in 28 states dentists examined the same set of x-rays and the same set of pearly whites, and then recommended widely differing treatments, with price tags to match: $500.00 to $29,850.00. They didn't seem to know what to do or how much to charge for doing it. "I got 50 opinions," Ecenbarger writes, "and I am not comforted." This article, however, barely scratches the surface with regard to dishonesty. For decades, the American Dental Association has worked hand in glove with industry to cover up the toxic properties of fluoride, causing untold pain and suffering among an unsuspecting population urged to trust their dentists, trust their government, trust their political leaders, no matter what. In the early 1930s, when American Dentistry was becoming aware of the damage fluoride can cause during the development of our children's teeth, there was a great call to remove the fluoride naturally present in water supplies. Communities in sixteen states had observed disfiguring stains and pits in their children's teeth. In 1940 the Journal of Dental Research contained a report describing a survey of the inhabitants of St. David, Arizona, where water supplies contained 1.6 to 4 parts per million of fluoride There was no apparent dental benefit from fluoride. In fact, more than half the people in all age groups over the age of twenty-three had artificial dentures. With this new awareness came fear.

http://www.viewzone.com/fluoride.html
By James Donahue I was a child when fluoride, a by-produce from the manufacture of atomic bombs, was first introduced to the American people. Nobody told us where fluoride came from. All we knew is that it was a newly discovered chemical that would make our teeth extra hard and ward off cavities. When a free fluoride clinic was set up one summer in our school, all the kids in town lined up to have the bitter tasting stuff rubbed on their teeth. We were pretty gullible in those days. The period immediately following World War II was a time of scientific advancement. After the inventions of nylon, rayon, plastic and other marvelous products that replaced fabrics, rubber and steel during the war years, people were lulled into the belief that those balding men in white laboratory jackets could solve all of the problems of the world. The belief was so strong that we blindly accepted whatever a "scientist" told us. Nobody dreamed that we might be victims of fraud. My father was part of the magic. He worked as a chemical engineer for a factory that made a variety of products out of wheat and corn starch (including the brain-killing excitotoxin monosodium glutamate). He provided well and I consequently made regular visits to a dentist every summer. I knew well the agony of the dentist drill. It was nothing like the advanced water-cooled high-speed equipment used by modern dentists. Repairing a cavity doomed us to what seemed like hours of white-knuckle torture under the glaring lights of the dental chair, while a man with plastic rimmed glasses and bad breath bored his way through teeth (and bone?). Once the drilling was done, the dentist filled the hole he made with a hot metallic material that burned when it went in, and left a bad taste in your mouth.

Water Fluoride Analysis Service
Baylor College of Dentistry
College Home Page The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry provides fluoride analysis of drinking water samples. Because fluoride in drinking water helps reduce tooth decay it is important to have the appropriate amount of fluoride in the water we drink. The amount of fluoride we get depends on how much water we drink, which is strongly influenced by the climate in which we live. In warmer climates people usually drink more water and drink less in cooler climates. Therefore municipal water supplies that are fluoridated key the concentration of fluoride to the climate. It is also possible to get too much fluoride, which may cause fluorosis of teeth, resulting in opaque white spots or, in more severe cases, brown staining or mottling of the enamel. Baylor College of Dentistry provides a water fluoride analysis service so that people may know how much fluoride they are getting. This service may be obtained through a dentist's office or individuals may contact the Dental College directly. A mailer will be sent containing special sample tubes and directions for collecting and sending the water samples. There is a modest fee of $10.00 per sample for the service. We are no longer able to carry accounts and bill for services. A check for $10.00 should accompany each sample and may be from either the doctor or the patient.

Highprofile Canadian fluoride advocate slams fluoridation

A crack appears in the fluoride front
After surveying the growing evidence, a high-profile advocate
has second thoughts about the safety of fluoride By Michael Downey Special to The Toronto Star , April 25, 1999 Two years ago, parents in the United States began noticing the word "poison" on their toothpaste tubes. The reason: U.S. drug regulators were beginning to doubt the safety of fluoride, particularly to children, and demanded warnings on the labels. Health Canada has not followed the U.S. lead, although fluoride toothpaste here does carry a mild warning to avoid swallowing it. But attitudes toward fluoride in this country are also beginning to change. Dr. Hardy Limeback is a leading Canadian fluoride authority who is often cited by health officials in their defense of fluoridated water. He is also a long-standing consultant to the Canadian Dental Association and a professor of dentistry at the University of Toronto. But in an interview last week, he conceded that fluoride may be destroying our bones, our teeth and our overall health. Although he still believes fluoride in toothpaste is effective against tooth decay, he says it doesn't need to be added to our water and we may be taking unnecessary risks by doing so. "There is no point swallowing fluoridated water. The only benefit comes with direct contact with the teeth." Limeback is currently studying fluoride buildup in the body, and his results, like those of other studies, are worrisome. "What we're finding indicates a trend: Torontonians have double the fluoride levels in their hip bones compared to Montreal, where water is not fluoridated." What effect these high fluoride deposits in our bones will have is unclear, he says, "but we know that in areas of the world where water is naturally high in fluoride, skeletal fluorosis is a widespread problem."

A common obstacle one runs into when trying to inform others of the dangers of a product is being told you are not an "expert". This can, however, be used to one's advantage if one happens to find an "expert" who verifies your own views on the benefits of natural versus chemical approaches to health. My background is that of a Chemical Engineer, having earned my B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in 1984. When it comes to chemistry I can say that I am an "expert" in this area due to studying it full time for over 10 years.

Chapter 1 : Worker risks weren't a priority
By Peter Eisler, USA TODAY In fact, Wolf, a medical director with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, had evidence of serious dangers. His staff had done classified studies at Harshaw's restricted "Area C" plant and found that concentrations of radioactive uranium dust in the air reached 200 times the safety limits of the day. Having alerted Harshaw to the problems, Wolf wanted workers' urine checked for signs of kidney damage. But company officials worried that the tests might alarm employees, so they asked that he come out first to allay any fears among the men. "It is easy to understand that extensive sample-taking of this character may cause (workers) to wonder about their health," Wolf's boss wrote to Harshaw executives just after the doctor's trip. "It was for this reason that Dr. Wolf (visited) to explain to them that all of our records indicated that no unusual hazard existed." Actually, the severe hazards already documented at Harshaw were getting worse.
