The Toxic Effects of Fluoride The devastating, toxic effects of fluoride are well documented by mainstream organizations. The American Chemical Society published a 17-page cover story (1988) questioning the safety and effectiveness of fluoridation. In the U.S. a disease of brown decaying teeth has been known since 1916. In 1931 it was identified as "dental fluorosis". Bone disorders (skeletal fluorosis, osteoporosis and arthritic pains) from fluoride in the water have been reported in the U.S. In Bartlett, TX (1943-1953) where the water had 8ppm fluoride, the death rate was 3 times higher than in neighboring Cameron, TX with 0.4 ppm fluoride. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and The Safe Water Foundation estimate 30,000 to 50,000 excess deaths each year in areas where there is 1 ppm fluoride in the drinking water, the normal added amount.

George Glasser "Fluoride has two faces, one apparently benevolent, the other unquestionably sinister." (G.E. Smith, 1985) Fluorine is the 13 or 14 most abundant element on earth. In its elemental form, fluorine is a pale yellow, highly toxic and corrosive gas. In nature, fluorine is found combined with minerals as fluorides. Not accounting for industrial fluoride pollution, water fluoridation, etc., probably everyone is exposed to some form of fluorides. Most human exposure to fluorides prior to sixty years ago was primarily from natural sources such as naturally fluoridated drinking water, fluoride uptake in fruits and vegetables from the soil and seafood. However, over the past sixty years, there has been a dramatic expansion of the industrial, domestic, agricultural and medical usage of fluorine-based products, thus the average person's exposure has increased exponentially. People are exposed to airborne fluorides from manufacturing, phosphate fertilizer production, aluminum smelting, uranium enrichment facilities, coal-burning and nuclear power plants, incinerators, glass etching, silicon chip manufacturing, plastic manufacturing, and petroleum refining. Up to sixty percent of the population drinks some form of recovered fluorine pollution purposely introduced into the drinking water as a public health measure. Many more people consume food stuffs contaminated with fluorine based agricultural products (insecticides and fungicides), or fluorine based medicaments.

Over 90% of the U.S. population over 13 is affected. Strong links have been made to heart disease and low birth weight and infant mortality. For heart disease the association with gingivitis is stronger than the one for smoking or high cholesterol. As heart disease is the #1 killer in the US, many efforts are undertaken to reduce this alarming figure. In Canada large pictures of a diseased heart are placed on cigarette packs alerting to the fact that smoking causes heart disease. It is of great importance that warning labels and pictures of periodontal disease, oral cancer, diseased hearts, pituitary and thyroid glands, as well as Alzheimer’s brains - just to name a few - are placed on all oral care products containing fluoride. Why? A patent by the pharmaceutical company Sepracor discloses that concentrations of fluorides from fluoridated toothpastes and mouthwashes activate G proteins in the oral cavity, thereby promoting gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as oral cancer. Incomprehensibly, this vital information is being withheld from the public by all parties involved, including the company, at least two well-known Universities, and numerous oral disease experts. The report quotes WHO specifications which place the permissible limit at only 1 mg per litre. In these villages, however, the presence is as high as 7 mg at the highest level and 2.90 mg at the lowest. Steady consumption of fluoride water, says Arati Lalchandani, a city based doctor, affects both nerves and the bones and gradually makes movement and bending of limbs extremely difficult. In fact the situation is so bad in Siraha Khera, a village 70 kilometres from here, that angry villagers initially refused to speak to this correspondent. Said Ram Pyare, " people do not want to give their daughters in marriage nor do they accept our daughters as bride". Sixty year old Babadeen, barely able to stand on his badly twisted limbs, grimaced and said that he was forced to drink the water because there was no alternative. Fifteen year old Jagdish, his body badly disfigured, tersely said he did not need anyone's sympathy while fifty year old Chandrakali lamented that though a steady stream of officials and experts continue to visit the village, nobody had come up with a solution as yet. All attempts to defluoride the water have met with very little success. The National Water Mission had launched a scheme a decade ago and a defluoridation plant was also set up at village Mirrakala. But the plant has been lying idle for the last ten months ever since power cables were stolen. The process of defluoridation consists of using bleaching powder and chemical treatment and experts said that individuals could not possibly carry it out.

New research questions the safety and efficacy of fluoride and fluoridation. Dentists wondered why, in the early 1900's, in pockets of the Southwest USA, many residents' teeth were permanently stained yellow, brown or black, some just had white blotches, some were crumbling. They called it "Colorado Brown Stain." The culprit - high levels of tasteless, odorless fluoride in drinking water, from 2 - 13 parts per million (ppm), which also irrigated crops the locals ate. These ugly, sometimes deformed, teeth were unusually cavity-free. Since fluoride stained teeth, dentists assumed fluoride also prevented decay. "Colorado Brown Stain" became known by the more scientific term, dental fluorosis. Unfortunately, dentists overlooked what's obvious today, even to a layperson. They failed to factor in the calcium, magnesium and other teeth strengthening minerals also in the water supply. Children, who didn't live in fluoridated communities, were (and still are) prescribed fluoride supplements - a drug marketed before safety testing was required by the Food and Drug Administration.
