Need information on global warming? Solar hot-water heaters? Building energy codes? Paybacks on investments in energy efficiency? Green building products? You name it, CREST has it. The Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology, an organization based in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, maintains Solstice, a web site that has become a valuable source of information on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable living. CREST works with more than 50 organizations to place electronic product and service databases, case studies, reports, newsletters, events calendars, and other resources onto its "Solstice" web server, creating a one-stop shop for people working on solutions to global environmental problems. CREST’s latest web venture is a project called GEM , the Global Energy Marketplace. GEM, which is sponsored by EPA’s Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation, is an indexed, searchable collection of several thousand annotated links to resources all over the Internet. It is intended to facilitate global commerce in clean energy technologies, saving users time and money in locating information about energy efficiency and renewable energy. CREST’s staff has "mined" through thousands of web sites on the Internet to find "gems" of valuable and accurate information. Whether you’re trying to find a vendor for solar hot-water heaters, assistance in adopting and implementing energy codes for buildings, detailed studies of successful energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, a list of mortgage lenders in your state for energy-efficient construction, or an analysis of the potential paybacks of investments in energy efficiency, GEM has what you need. The site is easy to search by category or keyword, and is designed to minimize the time spent searching for useful information.

FOOD INSECURITY AND HUNGER IN THE WAKE OF WELFARE REFORM
A number of recent studies highlight continuing unacceptable levels of hunger and "food insecurity" in the wake of welfare reform. Even as many families move off assistance and into the workforce, low wages and unstable employment leave many of them without adequate access to food. At the same time, emergency food providers report continued long lines and requests for food, particularly among working families and households with children. The following are key food insecurity/hunger findings from recent welfare reform and emergency food studies. While some of these data are from 1997 before federal welfare law was fully implemented, they reflect both the beginning of implementation and, in a number of states, fuller implementation of work demonstration projects that were approved before 1996. National/Multi-State Studies of Hunger/Food Security The Urban Institute's "Snapshots of America's Families," In a 1997 study of families no longer receiving TANF assistance in ten large states (California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas), 36 percent of families surveyed reported that their children were eating less or skipping meals due to cost.

    GENERAL INFORMATION
Florida State University, which was established in 1857, has evolved into a comprehensive research institution which offers undergraduate, graduate, advanced graduate, and professional programs of study, conducts extensive research, and provides service to the public. The University's primary role is to serve as a center for advanced graduate and professional studies while emphasizing extensive research and providing excellence in undergraduate studies Florida State University is a thriving educational institution of national and international reputation serving approximately 29,000 students from all 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. Florida State University is located in Tallahassee, the capital city of Florida. Tallahassee is one of Florida's oldest and most rapidly growing cities and has an area population of about 193,000. Well-known throughout the country for its beauty, it is part of "the other Florida" - a land of underwater caves and deep crystal springs, rolling hills and cool, dense woods. Lakes with some of the world's best freshwater fishing abound, and the Gulf of Mexico is only 30 minutes away. Tallahassee's climate is semitropical. During a normal winter the days are sunny and warm (about 60 to 80 degrees F) and the nights are cool (about 30 to 50 degrees F). There are occasional brief periods of freezing temperatures, but snow is virtually unknown. The summer days are hot (80 to 95 degrees F), but the nights are usually cool and pleasant. During the summer the relative humidity is high and brief rain showers are frequent.

The Institute for State Studies The Institute for State Studies (ISS), is a non-profit foundation devoted to the development of strategies to resolve public policy dilemmas resulting from new technology. The Institute is located at Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah and has three programmatic areas of focus.
    • New models of governance made necessary by information technology
    • Using technology to accelerate the velocity and flexibility of education
    • Increasing the speed and decreasing the cost of environmental progress
Financial support for ISS is derived from an expanding endowment, contracts for project administration and ongoing development activities. The Institute funds scholarly research, educational initiatives and opinion leader gatherings as the primary means of meeting its mission. Scholarly Research
The Institute for State Studies draws on academics and leaders from various economic and social disciplines to do policy research within the defined programmatic areas. Two examples of ISS research currently underway are: Barriers to Competency Measured Education Systems The level of education necessary for an information age workforce has dramatically increased. Most workers change jobs and even careers numerous times. This is changing the nature of the demands being placed on educational institutions. For centuries students have traveled to campus because knowledge was stored, enhanced and disseminated there. Consequently, institutional “credit” became the “currency” of academic accomplishment. Under a credit system, a student completing a set of courses prescribed by the school or college is awarded a degree. The student is presumed to have achieved sufficient mastery in the discipline of study based on the good standing of the institution. The greater the reputation of the school, the higher the student’s credential is valued in the marketplace.

    Florida During World War II
Despite Florida's growing tourism, it was still the least-populated southern state in 1940, and ranked only 27th nationally. World War II changed this statistic. Florida played an important role in the events leading up to and during World War II. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. On December 8th, America entered World War II. Many men and women came to Florida to help prepare soldiers for the war. Among the large number of soldiers from all over the U.S. who fought in this war were over 250,000 soldiers from Florida.
    Military Installations in Florida
Because Florida had a warm climate and a lot of vacant land available, it was ideal for the building of military bases and training soldiers. In the 1930s, there was a tremendous growth of military estab-lishments throughout Florida. Florida soon had 172 military installations, ranging from both extremely large to relatively small camps. Two of the larger complexes were Camp Blanding, established near Starke, and the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Camp Blanding became Florida's fourth largest city during World War II. It grew to 180,000 acres and housed 55,000 soldiers at a time. Additional naval stations were reactivated at Key West, Drew and MacDill Air Fields in Tampa, Elgin Field at Valparaiso, and the Pensacola Naval Air Base. Two of the smaller camps were Sopchoppy Bombing Range and Immokalee Army Air Field. By the mid 1940s, there were forty airfields actively training military personnel throughout the state. Florida's weather conditions and flat land made it the perfect place for training, especially pilots.

Florida State University offers both master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in oceanography with specialization in biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography. Graduates from the Department of Oceanography hold research positions in industry, private research institutions, and federal and state laboratories and regulatory agencies. Some graduates are teaching in colleges and universities, here and abroad, and many international graduates have returned to their homelands to work for local government and private entities. The placement of our graduates into professional positions attests to the quality of our program in oceanography. In the last five years, 31 M.S. and 24 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded. The Department of Oceanography is of a size that its students form a cohesive group and enjoy an important sense of camaraderie among themselves and with the faculty. Through both the structured coursework and the informal atmosphere outside of regular classroom teaching, students learn how successful scientists tackle difficult problems on the frontiers of oceanographic understanding. The department has gained both national and international recognition. Faculty members often chair sessions at scientific conferences, participate in international workshops and seminars, and serve as officers for various professional organizations. Their research is reported regularly in a score of scientific journals.

    Global Warming Threatens Florida
The changing climate will have a profound effect on the Sunshine State's citizens, economy and environment. FLORIDIANS

    Act Now

Tell Governor Bush it's time for a serious climate action plan.
Florida is already feeling the early effects of global warming, with more severe impacts yet to come. That's the conclusion of an October 2001 scientific study published by NRDC in conjunction with research scientists at Florida universities. The study finds that the far-reaching effects of global warming will transform Florida's climate, coastline and treasured natural areas in ways that will profoundly affect the state's economy and agriculture, as well as the health of its people. In short, global warming has the potential to affect everything that defines Florida today, and to alter the lives of many Floridians. In fact, scientists have already observed changes in Florida consistent with the early effects of global warming: retreating and eroding shorelines, dying coral reefs, saltwater intrusion into inland freshwater aquifers, an upswing in forest fires, and warmer air and sea-surface temperatures. NRDC's study, "Feeling the Heat in Florida: Global Warming on the Local Level," which synthesizes the results of a number of international, national, and local studies, is designed as a tool for Florida's leaders, providing specific, localized projections that will inform important decisions to come.
