Source: USA TODAY research by Chris Cappella, Graphic by Kevin A. Kepple Floods are weather's biggest killer Floods, especially flash floods, kill more people each year than hurricanes, tornadoes, wind storms or lightning. More than half of all deaths occur in vehicles as they're swept away by moving water. Driving into seemingly shallow water could land a vehicle in water two or three feet deep, which is enough to float a car away. The graphic above shows how this can lead to a car or truck being tossed into a ditch, most times drowning its passengers if they haven't already fled.

Web posted at: 6:30 p.m. EST SEATTLE (CNN) Heavy rains and melting snow near Seattle destroyed two homes and forced hundreds to evacuate. In the coastal Aberdeen area southwest of Seattle, 300 families were forced to evacuate along the Wynoochee River, Grays Harbor County sheriff's Deputy Ed McGowan said. About 20 people had to be rescued by boat. (741K/23 sec. U.S. Highway 12, the main thoroughfare from Olympia to Aberdeen on the coast, was closed due to flooding on the Satsop River. "I've never seen Highway 12 closed. Never," Truck dispatcher Scott Howarth said. Highway 12 runs through nearby Montesano, and virtually all of the roads to the small city were closed. "It looks like a big huge lake," Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lynn O'Connor of Montesano said. "The older people who have lived here all their lives say they haven't seen flooding like this since the 1950s." On the outskirts of town the water is above the fence posts, she added.

Kansas, Oklahoma floods force hundreds from their homes
Augusta, Kansas In this story:
November 2, 1998
Web posted at: 10:26 p.m. EST (0326 GMT) AUGUSTA, Kansas (CNN) Dozens of rivers and creeks in south-central Kansas overflowed their banks Sunday and Monday, forcing hundreds of people in five counties to flee their homes, with more flooding possible Tuesday. Officials estimated that 900 people had been forced from their homes, but there were no reports of serious injuries. Kansas National Guard troops were called out Sunday and were still on the job Monday helping people evacuate from low- lying areas. Gov. Bill Graves canceled his campaigning for Tuesday's elections and toured the flooded areas, including Sedgwick and Butler counties, on Monday. Officials in Cowley and Sumner counties to the south were on alert as the water surged downstream.

FLOODS AND FLOOD PLAINS
Floods are common and costly natural disasters
When rivers overflow their banks, or flood, they can cause damage to property and crops. Floods are common and costly natural disasters. In the United States, the average annual cost of flood damage is more than $2 billion. Each year about 100 people lose their lives to floods. Floods usually are local, short-lived events that can happen suddenly, sometimes with little or no warning. They usually are caused by intense storms that produce more runoff than an area can store or a stream can carry within its normal channel. Rivers can also flood when dams fail, when ice jams or landslides temporarily block a channel, or when snow melts rapidly. In a broader sense, normally dry lands can be flooded by high lake levels, by high tides, or by waves driven ashore by strong winds. Small streams, particularly in the Southwest, are subject to flash floods (very rapid increases in runoff), which may last from a few minutes to a few hours. On larger streams, floods usually last from several hours to a few days. A series of storms might keep a river above flood stage (the water level at which a river overflows its banks) for several weeks.
Weather patterns can determine when floods occur
Floods can occur at any time, but weather patterns have a strong influence on when and where floods happen. Cyclones, or storms that bring moisture inland from the ocean, can cause floods in the winter and early spring in the western United States. Thunderstorms are relatively small but intense storms that can cause flash floods in smaller streams in late summer and fall in the Southwest. Frontal storms form at the front of large, moist air masses moving across the country and can cause floods in the northern and eastern parts of the United States during the winter and spring. Hurricanes are intense tropical storms that can cause floods in the Southeast during the late summer and fall.

Tornado Safety
If a tornado was approaching, would you know what to do? Tornadoes are the most violent atmospheric phenomenon on the planet. Winds of 200-300 mph can occur with the most violent tornadoes. The following are instructions on what to do when a tornado warning has been issued for your area or whenever a tornado threatens:
  • IN HOMES OR SMALL BUILDINGS: Go to the basement (if available) or to an interior room on the lowest floor, such as a closet or bathroom. Wrap yourself in overcoats or blankets to protect yourself from flying debris.

    The Most Common DoS Attacks

    A DoS Characterization Access List

    Introduction
Denial of service (DoS) attacks are common on the Internet. The first step in responding to such an attack is to find out exactly what sort of attack it is. Many of the commonly used DoS attacks are based on high-bandwidth packet floods, or on other repetitive streams of packets. The packets in many DoS attack streams can be isolated by matching them against Cisco IOS software access list entries. This is obviously valuable for filtering out attacks, but is also useful for characterizing unknown attacks, and for tracing "spoofed" packet streams back to their real sources. Cisco router features such as debug logging and IP accounting can sometimes be used for similar purposes, especially with new or unusual attacks. However, with recent versions of Cisco IOS software, access lists and access list logging are the premiere features for characterizing and tracing common attacks.
    The Most Common DoS Attacks
A wide variety of DoS attacks are possible. Even if we ignore attacks that use software bugs to shut down systems with relatively little traffic, the fact remains that any IP packet that can be sent across the network can be used to execute a flooding DoS attack. When you are under attack, you must always consider the possibility that what you're seeing is something that does not fall into the usual categories.
