1. Fleas? 100% Control With Insect Growth Regulators, FAQ's
answer to 100% control of fleas lies in a new weapon in the arsenal of flea warfare the IGR or insect Growth Regulator.

Achieve 100% Flea Control with Insect Growth Regulators and Avoid the Use of Toxic Chemicals
FLEA FACTS YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW
  • Two fleas in one house with one pet to feast upon can produce over 1 million offspring in their usual 9 month life-span
  • By nature, fleas often prefer light-colored pets to darker ones, and they are attracted to white (such as tennis shoes and white socks)
  • Flea cacoons can hibernate for up to a year. It is this dormant stage which best survives winter to torment you and your pets again each Spring
  • Most Insect Growth Regulators are destroyed by Ultra-violet light and, therefore, not useful as yard treatments. See: Flea Fix for exceptions to this weakness.
IGRsFrequently Asked QuestionsFAQ's
Do Fleas Die in Winter? You may be expecting to see a DRAMATIC reduction in last summer's flea population because of this year's winter. But, alas, any fleas that were actively alive on your pets or in your house and most fleas which were in the cocoon or egg stage (and therefore protected from any freeze) are still alive and prospering, particularly in the mid and southern US. When the temperature reaches 70 degrees or higher and the humidity is high, fleas hatch, thrive and breed. This year's fleas are really just the sequel to last year's crop.

Fleas (Siphonaptera)
The fleas are small, wingless, obligate, blood-feeding insects. Over 95% of flea species are ectoparasites of mammals, while the others are ectoparasites of birds. The order is relatively small with about 2,500 described species, almost all of which are morphologically very similar. Adult fleas usually live in temporary association with their host; flea morphology, physiology and behaviour are intimately associated with hosts that are only intermittently available, temporary episodes of feeding and the microhabitat of the nest, burrow or dwelling of the host animal. Mammals and birds which do not build nests, or return regularly to specific bedding, lairs or burrows generally do not have fleas. Hence, fleas are common on rodents, bats, carnivores and rabbits and virtually absent on ungulates. Through their close association with the habitations of humans and their companion and domestic animals, a number of species of flea have become distributed worldwide and now proliferate in previously inhospitable habitats. Many species of flea are able to parasite a range of hosts. This, combined with their mobility, which allows them to move easily between hosts, makes them parasites of considerable medical and veterinary importance and makes them difficult to control. Once on their host, fleas feed daily or every other day. Females require significantly more blood than males. Blood-feeding may have a range of damaging effects on the host animal, causing inflammation, pruritus or anaemia. Fleas may also act as vectors of bacteria, protozoa, viruses and tapeworms. Flease are also important as agents of cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, particularly in cats and dogs.

Common Fleas:
Cat Flea Ctenocephalides felis Dog Flea Ctenocephalides canis Human Flea Pulex irritans
What are fleas?
There are about 2000 species of fleas worldwide. The most common is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. Fleas are small, wingless, ectoparasitic insects measuring between 1-8mm. They are laterally flattened with clearly segmented bodies and large hind legs adapted for jumping. They possess piercing and sucking mouthparts. Their colouring ranges from yellow to chestnut brown depending on the species.
Where do they live?
Fleas are not generally host specific. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, can be found on a wide range of hosts from cats and dogs, through to camels and cattle. They are not adverse to biting humans and will happily live in association with them. There is, however, a human flea, Pulex irritans, which is quite rare and can also be found on a variety of hosts including badgers, pigs and foxes. Fleas can be found in the fur, feathers or sleeping areas of their hosts depending on the host's activity. In the home the cat flea is commonly found on both the cat, its bedding, or favourite area to lay in. How do they breed?

Insect Growth Regulators (IGR) Generally have very little toxicity to mammals since it disrupts the growth and development processes specific to insects. Can cause sterilization of adult insects. They contain a synthetic juvenile hormone "look-alike" which disrupts the normal growth development of cockroaches, stored product pests, fleas, and others. When they become adults, they will become adults incapable of reproducing. It also disrupts the normal life cycle thus killing these insects. Below are products containing IGR material.

(Frequently Asked Questions about Archer and Flea Fix) An Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) breaks the flea lifecycle by preventing a young flea from growing normally, into the next phase a biting, breeding adult.
The first IGR to come out was Precor. It did a wonderful job of interrupting the flea life cycle in the house, but it breaks down rapidly in sunlight. So it didn't complete the job of getting rid of fleas in the whole environment. Program pills for dogs and cats is technically an IGR. The chemical in the pet's bloodstream stops the baby fleas from being able to hatch out of the egg. This, however, is its downfall. With Program, the flea has to bite the pet, AND CONTINUE TO CHEW ON THE PET for the rest of its life, to be effective. Archer and FleaFix are third generation IGR's that work in the environment. There is no need to feed chemicals to the pets, and they don't easily break down in sunlight. This is true long term control. No flea can reproduce on your property for months at a time either indoors or outdoors. We use Archer because it is so much more economical, but if you have just a small area, then FleaFix is just as good of a choice.

Pet professionals such as the groomers (who deal with dozens of flea-infested animals every day) and breeders (who keep puppies as well as adults), don't have fleas in their own homes. What do they know that you don't know? Nothing, if you read the information on this page.
    Never Underestimate the Opposing Force
The Enemy: Fleas are hardy and determined: designed to be uncrushable and unfathomable. And they have to be dealt with in a ruthless manner. Fleas are hardy and determined. They CAN be killed, but their resilience and 4-stage life-cycle make it more difficult than most people want to believe. Additionally, the fact that fleas don't spend most of their time on the pet makes the problem of locating them and wiping them out even harder. Check Does my pet have fleas?

It is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an insect repellent and no other substance has been found to be more effective.

    IGR
    Insect Growth Regulators
Growth inhibitors or insect growth regulators (any of which is commonly known as an IGR) are products or materials that interrupt or inhibit the life cycle of a pest. Many people loosely use the terms "birth control for roaches" or "birth control for fleas." If an animal cannot reach adulthood, it is not capable of reproducing. By inhibiting the maturity of an insect, we keep it from reaching the critical adult stage, thus stopping the life cycle and infestation. In layman's terminology, an IGR is not an insecticide (in the bug killing definition) but is a man-made protein that only effects certain insects or groups of insects.
Flea eggs and flea larvae that are exposed to an IGR ( Nylar Precor Methoprene ) will never develop into the adult jumping, biting and (most important!) reproducing fleas. As another example, roaches that are exposed to either Nylar or Hydroprene cannot shed their exoskeleton or develop a new exoskeleton. This is an important part of the roach life cycle: if they cannot shed their outer shell or grow a new one, they cannot mature any further.

Insect Controller® This battery operated state-of-the-art electronic device is specially designed to repel spiders , ticks and fleas (up to 6 metres operational radius). Unlike humans and mammals with more sophisticated and complex hearing organs, insects and spiders respond to ultrasonic soundwaves through antennae, wings, body hairs and rudimentry eardrums. These mechanical vibrations trigger neural impulses to cause behavioural modification. This affects food consumption, reproduction, communication and other biological factors. Pests eventually leave because of the abnormal environment they are exposed to.
