Biosafety Environmental Programs ... First Aid Policy - Attachment 2 First Aid Policy BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It is recommended that all university departments maintain adequate first aid kits in convenient and accessible locations. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.151, Appendix A states that first aid kits that meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard Z308.1 must be readily available (see Attachment 1). In addition, training of employees in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is encouraged. This training is available locally. For further information on classes, call the Iowa State University Training and Development office at 294-8914. Because of the potential for exposure to bloodborne diseases, such as AIDS and Hepatitis B, it is important for anyone who might give first aid and/or CPR to be aware of the hazards that contact with human blood and certain human body fluids may present. For most employees, providing first aid to someone in need is a personal choice. For other employees, providing first aid is a requirement of their job position and part of their assigned duties.

Safety in the use of chemicals at work
Code of practice
Chemicals are used in virtually all work activities thus presenting certain risks in workplaces all over the world. Many new chemicals are put on to the market every year It is therefore essential to establish a systematic approach to safety in the use of chemicals at work. This code of practice provides guidance on the implementation of the Chemicals Convention 1990 (No. 170) and Recommendation 1990 (No. 177) for all those engaged in framing provisions: competent authorities, managers of chemical companies and emergency services. It will also be of use to suppliers employers and workers organizations. The practical recommendations of the code cover all the elements necessary to ensure an efficient flow of information from manufacturers or importers to users of chemicals They will also enable employers to formulate measures to project workers, the public and the environment. The subjects covered include classification systems, labelling and marking, chemical safety data sheets, design and installation, control measures, work systems, personal protection, information and training, medical surveillance, emergency procedures, monitoring and reporting, and confidentiality.

In the event of an emergency, knowing the proper procedures can make the difference between a serious injury (or even death) and a "close call." Quick response to the situation requires knowing the correct steps to be taken. Something as simple as not staying on the telephone after contacting the 911 operator could result in loosing precious minutes from the response of the emergency team. A student at a Californian University was involved in a laboratory explosion and the friend who came to assist him failed to give the room number of where the victim was moved to the 911 operator . By the time the emergency squad found the victim, a large amount of blood had been lost. The victim now lives with his parents with permanent brain damage. Below is a list of information that, if followed, will reduce the chance of personal injury to yourself and other persons in the Denison Community.
