    http://www.rit.edu/~animate/about.html
Animation is the process of making a film one frame at a time.
These methods are not as clearly defined from other forms of
film making as they once were. But there are general categories. Hand drawn cartoons.

Artists who draw cartoons must learn to draw humans and animals out of their head in any position. They also must understand the acting of character performance, story, film making in general and all the related technology. Most cartoons today are drawn by hand on paper on a light table. These drawings are then scanned so they can be colored and composited (layered together) on the computer. This technique is often combined with others. There is actually a larger volume of cartoon animation being done now than there ever has been. 3-D computer animation.
    Special Effects

This is usually a combination of live action film making, 3-D computer animation, sometimes models and usually computer compositing. Animators may need to match characters and sets with live action footage.

    Bill Buxton
    Introduction
The following is an incomplete annotated reading list of books on visual effects, animation and film making that I have found useful, and recommend for the bookshelf of anyone in our business. I have all of the books mentioned. But just be aware in reading my comments that my expertise is limited in many of these areas (hence my need to read), nor is my opinion the only valid one. I welcome suggestions for further reading. (I always want to learn more about this.)
Box, Harry C. (1997). Set Lighting Technician's Handbook (second edition). Boston: Focal Press. ISBN 0-240-80257-8. This is sort of the Bible for anyone wanting to understand the basics of lighting for film. It is not about how to light; rather, it is about the technology and logistics of lighting. Hence, it is a good introduction to the vocabulary, etc. Braun, Marta (1994). Picturing Time : The Work of Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904). Chicago: University of Chicago Press. This might be the best book that I have read in 5 years. It is a great piece of scholarship that reads like an adventure novel. Marey was a brilliant researcher who deserves to be much better known. He made important contributions to the fields of cinemaphotography, medicine, kinesiology, the study of work, and photography. He made what is arguably the first motion capture system, and was an important influence on painters such as Duchamp and Degas. This is a must read for anyone interested in animation, film, or human factors.

Trail-blazers in the world of animation
Animation is the technique which gives movement and life to static objects, such as drawings, models or puppets. Animators can achieve this effect by exposing one frame of film at a time and adjusting their objects or drawings slightly between exposures. When the finished film is played through a projector, the rapid succession of pictures on the screen gives the illusion of motion. Film-making technologies opened up endless horizons for animators, but music and sound effects are particularly vital to bring their work to life. Trailblazers in animation include:
    Emile Cohl
Born in Paris, real name Emile Courtet, he drew strip cartoons. After the invention of the cinema, he went to work for the Gaumont film studio. Fantoche , simply drawn in white outlines within a black frame - the beginnings of 'stop-frame' animation in France.

    A Trick of the Eye
An introduction to the art of animation by Brian Sibley There's no getting away from it, we love animation. Whether it's Wallace and Gromit riding a toy-train in pursuit of that villainous penguin, Feathers McGraw, or the endless, crazy attempts of Wile E. Coyote to catch the elusive Roadrunner, we remain fascinated by the art of animation. Many of the greatest 'toon' stars - from Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny to Buzz Lightyear and Bart Simpson - have become household names with as many fans as flesh-and-blood stars of film and television. Some, like Mickey Mouse, are known in just about every corner of the world. According to the Mouse's creator, Walt Disney, who did more than anyone in the 20th century to influence the development of the medium, 'Animation can depict anything the mind of man can conceive'. And that has certainly proved to be true. For over a hundred years now, animation has amused and entertained us by making jokes and telling stories. But it has done many other things as well: educational films have used animation to promote healthy teeth and teach road-safety; advertising commercials have used it to sell us everything from breakfast cereals to soap-powders; while, on various occasions (often in times of war), propaganda films have turned to animation to help promote political ideas and keep up morale.

Neg will be saved for later editing. I'll try to get a work print to play with for now. Finally, a solution to using US electrical equipment, movie projectors brought over to the UK, has been found and implemented. Now I can start transferring movies to video again. Film transfers I make allow my ideas to be put on the web and on CD disks for distribution. I used to teach how to make Super 8mm, 8mm, and 16mm films, self process them, animate, add sound, and print them. I thought that 16mm and 8mm Film Students should be able to enter a room full of old film equipment and exit with some sound on film prints of his or her own making, having had historical hands on learning experiences in animation, filmmaking, processing and printing movie films. We have the technology - YOU have the talent!
The technology is here today for you to produce your full length features using video!
In recent years the production of independent films and videos has greatly increased due to many contributing technologies. The internet has allowed the independent producer the opportunity to achieve broad distribution of their product for little or no cost. This is the same phenomenon that created the buzz which launched “The Blair Witch Project” into commercial success and have given many small-town bands widespread exposure through web radio and MP3s. Faster access in homes throughout the country will soon allow the same broadband distribution of video and an independent producer will not only be able to create a buzz for their production, they will actually be able to distribute it right into our homes. There are many new technologies making this broadband distribution a reality. The new DV camcorders, decks, and non-linear editing systems have brought the ability to create high quality final productions at a fraction of the cost of a similar system just 2 years ago. In fact, this new format is so popular that major studios are now supporting DV production and the Sundance Film Festival has received about three times as many digital entries this year compared to previous years!

    http://www.educationinfoindia.com/Rajasthan/CareerGuidance/filmmaking.htm
Back Home Film Making INTRODUCTION Film is probably the broadest and most varied creative opportunity in mass media. Films, a blend of creativity and technicality are an important media, not only for entertainment and information, but also for communication. Films, the most international medium, have developed into a universal art form that transcends cultural differences. Film making includes feature films, documentaries, newsreels, Promotional films, TV commercials, music Videos etc. The craft of filmmaking is a teamwork which needs close coordination of various skilled individuals. It involves acting, directing, producing, script writing, cinematography, sound recording, visual mixing, editing and so on. A film maker like the captain of a ship has to look at all these aspects of film making. He has to start at the very bottom and work his way up, i.e. beginning with raising capital for the film to its distribution, screening as well as all the stages of its crafting. The field of film making which is highly competitive is one that has a lot of scope for employment opportunities especially, India which releases a large number of films every year. If one has artistic and technical skills and at the same time has the ability to express ideas, this is the right field for you. Even for acting and directing, which are basically creative fields that require inherent talent; training helps to hone the skills. In areas like cinematography, sound engineering and editing, professional training is essential. There are several universities institutions that offer training in these areas. The pioneering institute in this line is the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune
