ABOUT FIJI - CULTURE

In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life. These cultural traditions have eless survived to the present day, albeit in a more modified form.
Some of the more violent customs such as cannibalism were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. Human sacrifice was a part of the Fijian ritual in days gone by. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief's house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up"
The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.
Hierarchy The Fijian chiefly system follows the Polynesian system where the position is hereditary.

All of us at Matangi are very proud of our Fijian culture and heritage. A simple walk around the beach resort will allow you to see our native Fijian handicraft decorations. All of our Fiji style bures are decorated with traditional crafts. Our guests are invited to participate in cultural activities as a part of their holiday. Experience a traditional Fijian kava ceremony, visit a village on a neighboring island, or enjoy local Fijian musical groups who perform at the resort.
Yaqona, kava drinking ceremonies As a guest in Fiji, you will frequently be invited to participate in one of the most common ceremonial and social customs in our islands, the Kava Ceremony. The drinking of kava, or Yaqona, is quite common on social occasions. It is regarded in Fiji as "the National Drink". In the past, Yagona was drunk only by chiefs. Kava is made from the bare root of a pepper tree, pounded into a fine powder and then mixed with fresh water. Near Matangi Island, our family grows and exports kava root to the United States and Europe for use in homeopathic drugs and over-the-counter pills to aid in relaxation.
But in the Fiji Islands, the old customs still prevail. In fact, turning down an offer to drink a bowl of Yagona is considered insulting in Fijian society. In traditional times, Yagona was prepared by young village girls, who chewed the pieces of raw Yagona into a soft pulp before adding water. Today, the chief or head of the ceremony mixes the powdered root with water in a large hardwood bowl, called a Tanoa, straining the root through a cloth to keep out the grit. When it is ready, he claps with cupped hands to make a hollow "pop" sound.

FIJI: THE WARRIOR ARCHIPELAGO In War they are fearless and savage to the utmost degree, but in peace their disposition is mild and generous towards their friends, and the affection they bear towards their relatives is seldom found among Europeans. William Lockerby Marooned in Fiji in 1808 Fiji's Geography The 300-island archipelago of Fiji is at the bottom of the Melanesian chain of islands south from New Guinea. The archipelago is bound on the west by the Yasawas, the closest islands of the Fiji group to the Melanesian islands of Vanuatu. Melanesian influence is particularly marked among the Yasawa population, notably with regard to phisiogomy, language and socio-religious characteristics. At the easternmost edge of the archipelago lie the small and isolated islands of the Lau group. The proximity of the Laus to the islands of West Polynesia, particularly Tonga, has resulted in a considerable flow of culture and genes from Polynesia, with the result that Lau islanders both physically and culturally resemble their neighbors to the east. At the center of these two small island groups lie the four main islands of Fiji: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kandavu, which straddle the dividing line between two distinct peoples and their cultures. Fundamentally, Fijian society and culture are traditionally Melanesian, but modified by ideas and concepts introduced from Polynesia and integrated with Melanesian interests and practices.

Fiji Information The Melanesian peoples are the original inhabitants of the Fijian islands; dating back some 3,000 years. The first European to sight the islands was probably the Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman; in 1643. James Cook, the British navigator, explored Turtle Island in 1774. In 1874 Fijian King Cakobau allowed the islands to become a British Crown colony. Fiji was an important supply base during the Second World War, and Fijians even served with the British forces. Fiji gained full indedependence on October 10, 1970.

Mike's Fiji Phone Card Collection These cards were collected while I was a teacher in Fiji as a Peace Corps volunteer and later as an ex-patriot worker. Many of the rarest cards were found by my "gang" of street boys to whom I offered 10% of the face value for the blank cards they found left in telephones or in trash cans. I welcome your e-mail. However, I have limited my collecting to Fiji phone cards and do not want cards from other places. Although I have more cards than are illustrated here, these are (in my opinion) the more attractive or interesting of my collection. Contents:

He was a Herr Doktor, a demanding, pompous man shaped like a pork sausage. By the second night aboard our Fiji Cruise he was the victim of mass-avoidance. Like Mark Twain's "Old Traveler" he boasted about where he had been, about his prominence as a surgeon, how he was traveling the world while his wife, also a surgeon, stayed at home, tending to the sutures and clamps. But Jack was a different type. Everybody took to him immediately. Jack was a big Samoan, a boilermaker by trade who was taking his wife on her first vacation without the kids in 20 years. Jack became our official chief, our Ratu, in Fijian tribal parlance, and he didn't let go until he broke Herr Doktor. Jack: "You ought to come to Samoa. We would make you chief." Herr Doktor: "Ja?" Jack: "And the women would fall all over you."
Jack's wife nudges him. "Stop it," she whispers.
