30-Second Guide to Figure Skating Figure skating is one of the most popular of all Olympic sports, and it's also one of the few judged sports in winter Olympic competition today. The sport includes singles and pairs disciplines, as well as ice dancing. Singles and pairs figure skating feature jumps, lifts and many feats of strength and precision. Ice dancers cannot use of many of the most spectacular elements that other skaters can use, but instead concentrate on interpreting the rhythm and tempo of music through dance steps on the ice. Did You Know?
  • U.S. figure skaters have won more Olympic medals (40) than any other country in history. Additionally, the U.S. has won at least one medal in 14 consecutive Olympic Winter Games. Figure skating regularly draws some of the largest number of television viewers during its Olympic and other high profile events. Figure skating broadcasts from the 1994 Games in Lillehammer had the sixth highest rating in television history at that time. Synchronized skating, a non-Olympic discipline, is the fastest growing segment of figure skating. The first-ever World Synchronized Skating Championships was held in Minneapolis, Minn., in 2000.

http://www.itmssports.com/sports/figure/
Skillfully combining athletic performance and artistic expression, figure skating is undeniably among the most spectacular of sports. Indeed it is often portrayed as being more than a sport. Figure skating can almost be described as a live art. A mixture of art and athleticism. No other sport combines the elegance and beauty of balletic grace with the danger of complex triple and quadruple jumps, spiral sequences, twists, lifts, and throws at exhilarating speeds. Its various forms, from ice dancing to pairs to men's and women's solo skating, have entranced spectators around the world. Figure Skating also has arguably the highest visibility of any Olympic sport, consistently receiving higher television ratings and more broadcast hours than other major sports in both national and Olympic television programming. In the U.S., figure skating broadcasts from the 1994 Olympic Winter Games became the highest-rated Olympic television programming of all time. Coverage of the ladies' short program from Lillehammer had the sixth-highest rating in television history (48.5), placing it behind such successful American programs as the final episode of "M*A*S*H" and the finale of the "Roots" mini-series.

BRINGING HOME THE GOLD: ST. LOUIS LANDS THE 2006 U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006 U.S. Figure Skating Championships "It means a lot to us that St. Louisans will have the wonderful opportunity to see the nation’s best skaters compete on one of figure skating’s biggest stages," said David Klarich , Missouri state senator and chair of the St. Louis Local Organizing Committee. "And it’s very special to know that their presence in the Gateway City will go a long way toward inspiring the young people in the area who look up to these athletes. Hosting the Championships will certainly grow the sport locally and make our figure skating community stronger for the future." The U.S. Figure Skating Championships is the premier event conducted each year by the USFSA. It features 350 skaters competing for titles in three divisions (Championship, Junior and Novice). In recent years, total attendance for the Championships approached 125,000. The Championships have also enjoyed impressive ratings on ABC, ESPN and ABC Family. In 2006, the event will attract more than 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials to St. Louis. They will be responsible for filling 9,000 hotel room nights at a time of year when hotel occupancy rates in the region are normally at their lowest. Based on previous Championships and future projections, the economic impact of the event could be $15 million or more.

Evgeny Plushenko and Alexei Yagudin should go 1-2 in the men's, Irina Slutskaya will challenge Michelle Kwan in the women's, and the pairs haven't lost at Olympus since 1964. US outlook: Figure three medals, which would be the best showing in a decade. Kwan should win gold, with either Sarah Hughes or resurgent Sasha Cohen taking bronze. Both Todd Eldredge and Tim Goebel are good for bronze. Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman could be anywhere from fourth to seventh in pairs. Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev will crack the top 10 in dance, but little more. US roster Men Todd Eldredge, Lake Angelus, Mich.

FIGURE SKATING: Olympic picture coming into focus
Slutskaya, Kwan have advantage over Hughes
December 17, 2001 BY JO-ANN BARNAS FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER KITCHENER, Ontario And now you have it. Two days, two long programs and one short program later, the once cloudy Olympic picture in men's and ladies' figure skating became a lot less confusing Saturday night. When the last shavings were cleared from the ice, the International Skating Union's Grand Prix final produced what it generally does the front-runners heading into the Winter Games. So who are the 2002 Olympic gold-medal contenders among the women? Judging from what happened over the weekend, Irina Slutskaya and Michelle Kwan seemingly regardless of how well Sarah Hughes performs. Slutskaya, a Russian, captured her third straight Grand Prix final by winning (no surprise here) all four European judges. Runner-up and reigning world champion Kwan of the United States got the three other first-place votes from (no surprise) the American, Canadian and Japanese judges.

Figure skating/U.S. Olympic Trials: Eldredge relies on power, timing By Jayda Evans

Seattle Times staff reporter E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive Todd Eldredge stepped out onto the ice last night in a black costume with red stripes streaking down his chest and lost himself in the moment. Looking at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships logo etched into the Staples Center ice, Eldredge couldn't help but think back to 1983 when he first competed in figure skating in Pittsburgh. "Then I thought, 'Wow! This is nationals,' " said Eldredge, 30. "This is kinda like, 'Wow! This is my last Nationals." So much has changed since Eldredge came on the scene. Once it was figures that a skater had to master to dream of Olympic gold; now its quadruple jumps. But not Eldredge. In a routine revised since the 2001 Grand Prix, Eldredge was expressive, powerful and had precise timing with his operatic music selection. He opened with a triple-triple combination and his only bobble was on the landing of a triple lutz later in the program. "I told him I didn't want (a quad) done in the short program," said Coach Richard Callaghan, who coached Tara Lipinski to Olympic gold in 1998."Like he said, the short program isn't going to win you the title, but you can lose it in the short program." The short program is worth 33 percent of the score. The long program, which makes up the rest, is Thursday.

Michelle Kwan Biography
After winning four of the past five World Figure Skating Championships, Michelle Kwan won the bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. She's heading to Salt Lake City with a new coach and a new routine but has no plans on changing her skating superstitions. Like in every other competition, Michelle Kwan wears a gold dragon necklace which her Grandma gave her many years ago. Michelle grew up in Corsatta, California. She became interested in figure skating when she was five, after watching her older brother, Ron, play hockey. When Michelle Kwan was six, she entered her first skating competition and finished first. Michelle skated at the World Championships for the first time in 1994, when she was just 13 years old. She finished eighth and let the world know that there were more great things to come. Michelle Kwan would finish fourth in 1995 and won her first world title in 1996. She would go on to win world titles again in '98, '00 and '01. Even though Michelle Kwan won in 2001, she hasn't been skating her best since then. She finished second to Irina Slutskaya at the Goodwill Games and had a weak performance at Skate America in October 2001 - her first competition since firing long time coach, Frank Carroll. Michelle will still be a favorite at Salt Lake City and her rivalry with Irina Slutskaya of Russia should be one of the most watched matchups of

Quick Find People in the Know Sports World China Horizons Voices from Other Lands Life in China ... In the Spotlight CRI Online Sports A Golden Dream Comes True Back to Sports Main Page Figure Skating and the Stars Figure skating is probably the most popular event of the Olympic Winter Games; athletic, graceful, and rich in emotion and artistic expression. The feelings and personalities of the skaters are an important part of performances, captivating spectators and moving them in ways they could never have imagined. Figure skating originated in England, and developed rapidly in other countries on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In 1924, figure skating was included in the 1st Olympic Winter Games. At that time, it was the only event that women were allowed to compete in. A regulation-size skating rink is oval shaped, 56-61 meters long and 26-30 meters wide. The ice must be no thinner than 3 centimeters. Both the individual and pairs team competitions are composed of 2 parts, namely, short and long programs, which are performed over two days. Points are awarded for required elements and presentation. Each aspect is worth 6 points. A successful performance should be both technically clean, and with graceful interpretation of the music. At the top of women’s figure skating is American star Michelle Kwan. Combining fluid grace with strength, passion with stability, she has amazed us for years.
