The United States must finish within the top-five final placement to earn a trip to the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in September. Ten nations have been invited to the tournament. Vizzuso is the Cavalier record holder in assists with 60, which ranks second all-time in the ACC and 17th in Division I history. She holds the two top seasonal records, and her 25 in 1998 led the ACC. She had 14 goals and 25 assists in 1998, which led the Cavaliers with 53 points, the fourth-highest total in school history for a single season. OLYMPIC HISTORY Modern field hockey evolved in Britain in the late 1800s but was not introduced to the Games until 1908 and only took a permanent place in Antwerp in 1928. Amazingly, it took until Moscow in 1980 to introduce the women's game. The men's game was dominated by an incredible run of victories by India over three decades; between 1928 and 1956 all six gold medals in 30 consecutive games were won by Indians, one of the most remarkable Olympic statistics. As interesting to the statistically minded is the fact that Balbir Singh, who scored five of the six goals that took India to a 6-1 victory over The Netherlands in Helsinki, 1952, was just the first of four India players of the same name who played on winning teams. The first Balbir Singh, however, was the best; he was renowned for confusing goalkeepers with his turn of speed and body-swerve and was a member of three successive winning teams, 1948, 1952 and 1956, by which time he had been made captain. The Indians have won two further titles since 1956 and no nation has won a consecutive victory since India in Melbourne.

2001 saw the addition of Radford University to the conference. With the addition, the conference consists of eight teams. The teams are split into east and west divisions. All eight teams will be eligible for the 2002 NorPac Conference Tournament on Nov. 7-9, 2002, to be hosted by Stanford University in Stanford, California. The 2002 NorPac Tournament will be the fifth in the league's history. Stanford University will host for the second time (the first in 1999). Saint Louis University acted as a two time host (1998, 2000), while Appalachian State was the 2001 host institution. Since 1999, the NorPac conference has received an NCAA play-in opportunity. The 2002 NorPac champion will host their counterpart from the Patriot League on Nov. 12, and the victor will advance to the NCAA Tournament. Sixteen teams will begin Nov. 16 at four regional sites. A History of Hockey The roots of hockey are buried deep in antiquity. Hockey-like games involving sticks and balls have been played for thousands of years by people such as the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Irish, the Scots and the Indians of South America. Historical records show that a crude form of hockey was played in Egypt 4,000 years ago, and in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC. Various museums offer evidence that a form of the game was played by Romans and Greeks, and by the Aztec Indians of South America several centuries before Columbus landed in the New World. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens holds a square marble slab measuring 60 cm x 20 cm with four bas-reliefs of ancient sporting events. One of these shows Athenian youths playing field hockey. These bas-reliefs date back to 514 BC and show that a type of hockey was being enjoyed in Greece at that time. Hockey in England in the 17th and 18th century consisted of whole villages playing the game with the objective of hitting the ball into the opposing villages' common ground. Teams often consisted of 60 to 100 players and games occasionally lasted several days or so with injuries such as broken arms and legs not uncommon. Umpires could only arbitrate a decision if called upon to do so by a player from one of the teams. (a situation that sounds familiar even in these days!) In 1852 the sportsmaster of Harrow, an English Public School, advised his pupils that, among other things, no more than thirty players per team were allowed on the field at any one time. In those early days, team formation consisted of having more forwards than defenders, a situation that persisted up until the late 1800's.
