MATH 115, Mathematics through Its History is an activity-based elementary mathematics history course I designed and taught with mathematics majors, the majority of whom intended to become mathematics teachers. The somewhat ungrammatical title of the course is intended to carry two meanings; we attempt to study mathematics throughout its (early) history and we study mathematics by approaching it via its early history. Although the course could and will be taught during a traditional academic term, it so far has been offered during our Interim (January) term, which means it has met for 3 hours per day, 4 days per week during a 4-week term. A typical class session begins with a (usually) short quiz, followed by worksheet activities, followed by a combination of interactive lectures and hands-on activities, such as learning to use an abacus, learning to use a Chinese counting board, exploring Pythagorean figurate numbers with "pebbles" (candy), doing puzzle proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem, doing straightedge and compass constructions, and constructing the Platonic solids to discover Euler's formula. In general, activities are designed so that students discover results rather than simply review or practice them.

by Rose Williams Texas Classics in Action , Winter 1999 I have mentioned in other writings that teaching Latin in high school is like teaching butterflies to knit in that one must first get the students off the ceiling, then keep them concentrated on the subject when their natural tendency is to fly off in all directions. Teaching in university has challenges a bit different, but in either scholastic atmosphere my goals are much the same, and my subject matter and approach differ only slightly. What I teach to the best of my ability is a) basic and widespread Latin grammar, spelling, and pronunciation for a grasp of the language, and b) Roman culture and literature for a better understanding of that language and of the Romans because of the great impact both had on their world and the modern one. A critical factor in any class is time, so I break the grammar concepts that I feel must be covered into weeklong segments and build around them. These segments vary slightly according to the book we have, but for Latin I or the first university semester they include these: 5 complete declensions of nouns, including the five traditional cases; adjective and pronoun (

A new generation of math software that really adds up
By Russell Smith In our last look at math software several years ago (September 1997), companies had for the most part finally finished the bumpy transition from floppy versions to the CD-ROM format. Users still faced a rough and varied assortment of installation options and multimedia players, and the material was supplementary to the regular math classroom curriculum. Today, math programs still exhibit those nagging characteristics although, at least on the PC side, most publishers have finally discarded the 16-bit Windows 3.1 versions in favor of 32-bit Windows 9X versions and have adopted high-color video as the de facto color standard instead of the ubiquitous 256 color mode. A few programs shine above the rest to earn a highlighted spot in this issue's review.

As part of the Rialto Unified School District, Frisbie Middle School is using the Glencoe instructional materials to teach mathematics. Math 6 is a general mathematics course for sixth grade students. Under the Curriculum Links the alignment of the course can be checked against the RUSD Math Matrix, California Framework Standards, and the NCTM Standards. Links are provided to support the Math 6 curriculum for students, teachers and parents.
