For further information, please contact Bill Egnatoff, egnatoff@educ.queensu.ca. NEW 1880's Newfoundland - A Pictorial This photo collection is believed to be the work of Simeon Parsons, one of Newfoundland's earliest, self-taught, award-winning photographers around 1885. One hundred sixty-eight pictures are arranged in geographical order, complete with useful maps of the different regions of the province. There is a strong inclusion of methodism religion and clergy men; the styles of the photographs almost always include people, even though they are mostly landscape shots. The interactive maps are useful, although it might prove more effective to add close-ups of the region that each group of photos encompass. The site includes the history of the photos, from Parsons to Premier J Smallwood, the Methodist church and the Centre for Newfoundland Studies. Acadian Odyssey The english version of this site speaks of the origin of the word Acadia, and includes much information about geneaology, family crests, and Parisian or English roots from whence such names came. This site is appropriate for intermediate and senior students learning about Acadian; even junior grades could use this site usefully. Sections include "life prior to 1755," "Acadians in exile 1755-1762," and "Acadian life since 1763." There is little mention of Natives within the area at that time. The Deportation of 1760 is perhaps the most interesting section and the strongest part of the Acadian identity; this section should be closer to the beginning of the site to increase understanding of the rest of the contents.

RAND We examine the process by which antitobacco laws and ordinances were implemented and enforced in seven states and nineteen localities. Our findings indicate that state- and local-level clean indoor air laws were rarely enforced by governmental agencies. Instead, these laws were largely self-enforcing in that changed social norms regarding appropriate smoking behavior led to generally high compliance rates. In contrast, teen access laws were not self-enforcing, but were often enforced through periodic vendor compliance checks. We also found that antitobacco forces did not devote a significant amount of attention to implementation and enforcement issues. Their focus was primarily on enacting new legislation and fighting tobacco industry attempts to weaken existing laws.

In an age of disenchantment, old-fashioned heroism seems to be on the ropes; at the same time, unsung heroes are everywhere. Maybe it’s time to switch from public to private heroism. Beginning in the home… eter H. Gibbon is a research fellow at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education who travels around the United States talking about the current lack of respect for heroism in his country. He points out that New York City's Hall of Fame for Great Americans attracts only a fraction of the number of visitors who flock annually to Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He says that in an age of instant but often ill-prepared communication, people are being given the impression that "sleaze is everywhere, that nothing is sacred, that no one is noble, and that there are no heroes."

Request for Proposals - Public Disclosure of Potential and Theoretical Health Risks
Health Canada is seeking to understand when, how and under what circumstances Canadians want disclosure of potential or theoretical risks to health, as well as the type of information Canadians want to receive. Towards that end, the Health Policy Research Program has posted recently on the website below a request for proposals on public disclosure of potential and theoretical health risks. The intent of the research is to contribute to policy development for public disclosure by supporting the development of tools and methodologies that complement Health Canada's Decision Making Framework and by addressing gaps in health policy and regulatory initiatives. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 5, 2003

HomE Are you looking for a biography but cannot find it here? E-mail me with your request and I will see what I can find. There is not a biography for every famous person. Please remember that not every important or worthwhile person is honored by a Web site. There are many individuals whose biographies are simply not available on the Web. These are mostly biographies of people who are no longer living. This site is about past lives. I may consider requests for biographies of people who are still living, but will only add them under exceptional circumstances. Visit About Lives for more information about the content of the site. Sorry no homework help! I regret that I am unable to assist with requests for research or homework help. I collect the best of biography links, but time does not permit me to help with locating specific information on individuals or groups of people. Currently, all biographies are in English only. Although many excellent resources are available in all the languages of the world, I cannot honestly evaluate them due to my limitations in those languages. Regrettably, all links point only to English language Web pages. Bilingual lovers of biography are invited to become contributing editors in any non-English language.
