Recipients include one student who plans to become a bovine veterinarian, two who are looking at futures in agribusiness, another who hopes to become a county extension agent or farmer-friendly banker, and, in perhaps a sign of the times, one who has his sights on defending agriculture as a natural resources attorney. This year’s recipients are: Jordan Vander Veen Everson Thanks to the Running Start program, Jordan Vander Veen, a 2002 graduate of Lynden High School, is already a senior at Western Washington University, where he is majoring in math and computer science. He is the son of Whatcom County dairy farmers Jason and Debbie Vander Veen. After graduating from Western Washington, Vander Veen plans to enter law school, with the goal of becoming a natural resource attorney to "accurately represent agriculture and its impact on the environment in our judicial system." In his scholarship application, Jordan wrote about living on a farm all his life.

Telling spooky stories has long been a favorite pastime of young people -almost becoming a right of passage at sleepovers, pajama parties or campouts. Face to face, around a campfire or in a dimly lit room, exchanging bizarre and mysterious tales of strange phenomena that defy explanation -raises Goosebumps and an excitement of what might exist beyond the world we think we know -in the world of the unknown Throughout time, pre-teens and teenagers have reported seeing or experiencing strange and often frightening things such as elves, fairies, witches, ghosts and goblins, unicorns, angels, demons, monsters or UFOs. And certainly many have talked about having imaginary playmates when they were younger. Some researchers claim that in certain phenomena, teenagers may unknowingly draw these strange experiences to themselves as a result of the hormonal changes in their bodies and emotions-associated with puberty. They say a type of psychokinesis, (mind over matter) responsible for certain poltergeist activity, such as the tipping of furniture, slamming of doors, or items thrown across the room-could in fact, be precipitated by the biochemical aspects of puberty in pre-teens or teens. Others claim that these are valid and real experiences, but without explanation. Yet others dismiss such as fantasy and attribute it to the "playful imaginations" of the innocence of youth -that will eventually be transmuted into the logic and sensibility of their maturing minds. However, many

Tour of the Department
Mission Statement The Child and Family Development undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary programs focus on enhancing individual and group development using proactive, preventive, and self-correcting strategies. Viewing individual development holistically, the context of families, communities, and the global society are examined across the life span. All ages and stages of development including biological, cognitive, emotional, social processes are studied. Training and research embrace the concept of helping individuals and groups reach their full potential in constantly challenging and changing environments. Respect for diversity, quality of life, and community are emphasized. The interface of high and low technology as it affects the development of children, families, and communities is a major thrust. Since individuals are dependent at different developmental points and situations, the role of advocate in training and research and the need for political awareness and activism are supported.

Our Youth and Family Ministry Program is bursting with enthusiasm. We now offer Childcare (ages 3 mos. - 3 years) and Junior Church (ages 4 - 9 years) at both our 9 AM and 11 AM Sunday services. The Pre-Teens (ages 10 - 12) have their own group at the 9 AM sevice, while the Teens (ages 13 - 18) have their meeting times at the 11 AM service. There is so much to be excited about. Besides offering quality curriculum, the kids get involved in all sorts of activities. During the Month of March we had some Tibetan monks visiting with us and we got to make our own Mandala! The children participated by gluing colored sand onto a design that represents God'' House. One of the monks came to talk with us about what a monk is and what he does. Sharing cultural and spiritual ideas really gave the kids the chance to understand how other cultures practice spirituality. We also had the opportunity to participate in the season of non-violence. Many organizations came in to talk with the teens and pre-teens about what they do within the community to help spread PEACE. We made family peace pictures and worked on learning about Peace leaders. One of our teachers and myself, the Director, just arrived back from "The Virtues Project Conference". This is such a fundamentally exquisite program which offers schools, and other organizations the chance to have a real impact on chilldren through teaching the Virtues. We have already installed a part of the program in our Youth classes. Now we have the training to teach the other volunteer teachers, parents, and anyone interested in working with Youth how to incorporate the virtues into their homes, their lives, and their language. What a way to lower the violence ratio and increase the LOVE ratio!

Grades 4 to 6: More Sophisticated Safety Message Grade 7 and Up: Identity and Security In these hours of national agony, as we sense our security vanishing in the flames and smoke of unforeseen terrorism, many of us wonder what – and how much – to say to our children. The very sudden and shocking nature of the multi-pronged attack on America makes it all the more essential for Moms and Dads to find the right words, and the right way to communicate a message of safety and family security. Here is Family Education Network family therapist Carleton Kendrick’s ages-and-stages advice for how to express your own thoughts and feelings – and listen to kids talk – about what’s happened. Preschoolers: Limit Media Exposure During the Persian Gulf War and following the bombing of the Oklahoma federal building, many preschool teachers observed young children reenacting scenes from television news broadcasts in their classroom play. But while children may mimic scenes of tragedy, they lack the cognitive ability to fully comprehend what they see. Scenes of carnage may seem cartoon-like to some, truly terrifying to others.
