Olympic Equestrian: The Sports and the Stories from Stockholm to Sydney
Jennifer O. Bryant Few sights are as enthralling as rider and horse, in perfect partnership, riding for the glory of their country. Whether it is the thrill of cross-country, the bravado of show jumping, or the elegance of dressage, the Olympic equestrian disciplines offer horsemanship and athleticism at the highest levels. Olympic Equestrian chronicles the origins of the three-day event, show jumping, and dressage and their segue into the mainstream Olympic games. Author Jennifer O. Bryant relates the important developments that have shaped the horse world and equestrian competition as we know it today. She also shares the stories of such great Olympic partnerships as Mark Todd and Charisma, Hans Gunter Winkler and Halla, and Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt. In addition, Bryant discusses how the Games are organized, teams selected, and horses transported.

History
Equestrian events have a unique place in Olympic sport — they are the only events where humans are teamed with animals. It is also the only Olympic sport that pits men and women against each other as absolute equals. Although Australia has played host to the Games once before, Sydney will mark the debut of Olympic equestrian events in Australia. In 1956 when Melbourne hosted the Games, the equestrian events were held in Stockholm because of Australia's strict quarantine laws. The Olympic history of events involving horses can be traced back to 682 BC, when a four-horse chariot race was run at the Hippodrome in Olympia at Greece's 25th Olympiad.

An Overview
The Ancient Olympic Games
The Ancient Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece beginning in 776 B.C. These ancient games were held every four years for almost 1200 years.
The Modern Olympic Games
Inspired by the Ancient Games, the Modern Olympic Games were first held in 1896. There were 245 athletes (all men) competing in 43 events. These Modern Olympic Games were inspired by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and did not include any equestrian sports. Equestrian Events were not added as a full status sport until 1912. In 1912, 27 starters from 7 nations competed in each of three Equestrian Events, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping, over a 5-day period of time. For the first half-century of Olympic Competition equestrian sports were solely represented by the military.
The Dressage Event
The art of Dressage is often compared to the ballet. A rider must execute precise maneuvers with a high degree of accuracy on a very fit horse. The judges evaluate not only the horse's performance, but the rider's ability to communicate with his or her mount. The more skillful the rider the less obvious his instructions to the horse will be.
The Three Day Event
This portion of the Olympic Competition is the most challenging, and traditionally has been the United States strongest event. It is designed to be a grueling test of both the horse and rider. The Three Day Event is patterned to highlight the qualities of a premium military mount, the horse must be responsive, obedient, bold, and athletic, with enormous physical and mental stamina. As its name indicates, this event consists of three phases, they are Dressage, Cross-country and Obstacle course, and Stadium Jumping.

Olympic History: Equestrian
Dressage Dressage, derived from the French word "dresser" meaning "to train," dates back to the Renaissance, when it gained recognition as a great training method for European cavalries. The sport has not changed since then, being introduced into the Games in 1912 and was open only to military riders. By 1952, the rules changed and everyone from civilians to women became eligible. Often described as horses performing ballet, equestrian is looked at as a team sport with a horse and rider working together to perform a routine of dressage movements. Jumping Riders and horses have been showjumping since the early 1800s and the event remains the most popular equestrian even in the Olympics.

With Equestrian Andrew Hoy and his 1996 Olympic Team Gold mount Darien Powers leading the charge, the Australian Olympic Three-Day-Event Team won the Gold for their third straight Olympic Games, making Olympic history. Together with team mates Phillip Dutton, Matt Ryan, and Stuart Tinney, Hoy took to the podium to collect the first Olympic Gold Medal of the 2000 Olympic Equestrian Games. Riding in his fifth Olympic Games, Hoy has been on the Gold podium with his teammates in Barcelona in 1984, Atlanta in 1996, and now Sydney in 2000. The affable and easy going full time Three-Day rider and trainer, scored a persom nal best with a dressage score of 30.60 points, galloped a picture perfect cross country, and had a clean stadium jumping round. Engaged to German event rider Bettina Overesch, an Olympic Team Gold medallist herself, Hoy credits her with helping him improve his dressage scores. Raised in Australia, the now 41-year-old , had plenty of experience raised on a farm chasing sheep and cattle. He divides his time between Australia and England where he trains and competes year round. Related Links

Olympic History: Swimming
There is no exact date for when swimming was invented, but there is evidence dating the sport back for centuries. Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Click here for more on this story Latest: Monday September 25, 2000 09:00 AM HORSLEY PARK, Australia The best all-around athlete at the Games has no endorsement contracts coming his way, no girls swooning at his glance and no autograph hounds baying at his door. With all due respect to Ian Thorpe, Marion Jones and Andreea Raducan, the best all-around Olympic athlete to emerge from the first 10 days is ... a horse. Custom Made is his name, a 17-hand high, 16-year-old, 7/8ths Irish Thoroughbred gelding who, ridden by David O'Connor of The Plains, Va., gave the U.S. its first equestrian gold medal since 1984, a dry spell that was beginning to make the American horse set wonder how the West was won. "It's huge," says O'Connor, who also won a bronze in the team eventing competition with his wife, Karen.
