The aim of the reading component is to give students practice in a variety of effective approaches to texts in written English. These approaches include:
  • having a purpose for reading (e.g. for information, entertainment or research) using appropriate reading strategies (e.g. predicting, reading quickly for the general idea, searching for specific information, reading carefully, rereading, ignoring information considered irrelevant) responding flexibly (e.g. switching reading strategies as appropriate to the text or the specific task) using a variety of processing skills (e.g. knowledge of grammar, of vocabulary, of word formation, of text organisation) adopting an interactive relationship with the text (e.g. using prior knowledge and experience to aid comprehension; asking questions of the text, e.g. about content, purpose, style; interpreting and evaluating; synthesising knowledge gained from the text with prior knowledge practising regularly.

    Reading
Reading is a constructive meaning-based act which, depending upon purpose, background knowledge, and reading task, requires readers to use a variety of skills and strategies before, during, and after reading. It is a process that develops over a long period of time and through extensive practice.
The goal is to help students become fluent, independent, strategic readers. According to the International Reading Association (1999), reading requires teachers to help students develop:
    • motivation to read extensively
    • appropriate active strategies to construct meaning from print
    • sufficient background information and vocabulary to foster reading comprehension
    • ability to read fluently
    • ability to decode unfamiliar words
    • skills and knowledge to understand how phonemes or speech sounds are connected to print.
When developing students' reading skills and strategies, consider the following guidelines. A sample planning guide and teacher checklist are also provided at the end of this section to support the development of students' reading abilities.
    1. Provide students with many opportunities to read.

Send an E-Card THAT OLE BOOK MAGIC Cast a spell with these easy activities from FamilyFun by Mary Leonhardt of 5 Helping children fall in love with books has been a personal crusade of mine for two decades, both as a high school English teacher and a mother of three. In observing my students over the years, I've discovered that avid readers acquire their love of reading at home, from their parents. No teacher can pass along a passion for books the way a loving mother or father can. My best readers remember cozy bedtime stories, sharing books with friends and siblings, andperhaps most importantthe freedom and encouragement to read whatever they wanted to. What follows are some tips for nurturing an early love of reading. These ideas are offered as a jumping-off point; all children are different, and what works for one child may not work for another. The key thing to remember is that anything to do with reading and writing needs to be fun. If you tune into your child's interests and passions, you'll be able to develop your own strategies for giving him a lifelong love of readingin my view, the best gift we parents can give our children.

"Thank you for letting me enjoy "Windows of the Mind" by Frank Brennan. It is a reader with a clear message for humanity. In these days when our senses are blurred by the media and pollution readers can become aware of how significant trust in our sight, taste, smell and touch can be.
My students and I were deeply attracted by each story presented in this collection. I will honestly feel inclined to recommend this book not only for its well graded vocabulary and grammar but also for the way topics are handled."
