What is this website about?
Although I call it my personal homepage this website is not (all) about me. I am yet too young to write my biography. I regard this site more as a kind of personal journal where I can publish and promote many of those things that matter to me regardless of any commercial interest. However, I have included quite a bit of personal information in the "personal" section - in case somebody is really interested in my baby photographs and favourite Tango music... You can search this site (over 60 pages) using keywords in the search box below:
Search hint : Avoid keywords like "solar" which appear in the navigation panel (on the left) on every page.

Economic and Environmental Issues
by David Pimentel, G. Rodrigues, T. Wane, R. Abrams, K. Goldberg, H. Staecker, E. Ma, L. Brueckner, L. Trovato, C. Chow, U. Govindarajulu, and S. Boerke (Originally published in BioScience Vol. 44, No. 8, September 1994) Solar energy technologies, paired with energy conservation, have the potential to meet a large portion of future US energy needs The United States faces serious energy shortages in the near future. High energy consumption and the ever-increasing US population will force residents to confront the critical problem of dwindling domestic fossil energy supplies. With only 4.7% of the world's population, the United States consumes approximately 25% of the total fossil fuel used each year throughout the world. The United States now imports about one half of its oil (25% of total fossil fuel) at an annual cost of approximately $65 billion (USBC 1992a). Current US dependence on foreign oil has important economic costs (Gibbons and Blair 1991) and portends future negative effects on national security and the economy. Domestic fossil fuel reserves are being rapidly depleted, and it would be a major drain on the economy to import 100% of US oil. Within a decade or two US residents will be forced to turn to renewable energy for some of their energy needs. Proven US oil reserves are projected to be exhausted in 10 to 15 years depending on consumption patterns (DOE 1991a, Matare 1989, Pimentel et al. 1994, Worldwatch Institute 1992), and natural gas reserves are expected to last slightly longer. In contrast, coal reserves have been projected to last approximately 100 years, based on current use and available extraction processes (Matare 1989).

Energy Consumption
Farms: 1 quadrillion Btu (quad) of energy (1994) Food processing: 1.2 quads (1994) Production of agricultural chemicals and commercial fertilizers: 0.67 quad (1994) Farmers use fuels to run farm equipment for planting and harvesting, fertilizer and pesticide application, and transportation of products. Electricity is used to run conveyors and irrigation systems and power up specialized machinery (milking machines). Diesel fuel is used the most (63%), followed by gasoline and liquified gases. Farm fuel expenditures account for about 3.5% of total farm production expenses. While agriculture is dependent on energy in many ways, it could also provide a home-grown source of fuel, power, and industrial products. These sources could be in the form of clean plentiful biofuels for farm machinery and other vehicles, a cost-effective source of power, and biomass feedstocks for industrial products such as chemicals and plastics. There are also opportunities for farms to make greater use of renewable resources such as solar and wind energy. Environmental Factors
  • The annual generation by the farming sector of an estimated 1 billion tons of waste, including crop residues

India: Environmental Issues Introduction

India, the world's second most populous nation, has seen its population explode from 300 million in 1947 to approximately one billion today. This rapidly growing population, along with increased economic development, has placed a strain on India's infrastructure, and also on the country's environment. Deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution and land degradation continue to worsen and are hindering economic development in rural India. Rapid industrialization and urbanization in India's metropolises are also serious concerns. The Government of India (GOI), recognizing the severity of these problems, has adopted a comprehensive policy to address the environment. India was the first country to insert an amendment into its constitution allowing for the state to intervene and to protect public health, forests and wildlife. The 42nd Amendment was adopted in 1976, but an important limitation on the amendment was a clause specifying that it "shall not be enforceable by any court". More effective environmental legislation was adopted in the form of the Environment Protection Act of 1986. Under this Act, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has overall responsibility for administering and enforcing environmental laws and policies. The MoEF established the importance of integrating environmental strategies into any development plan for the country. One of MoEF's main focuses continues to be the reduction of industrial pollution.

Primary energy sources are sources that are naturally available on the earth. They can be renewable, meaning that they are recurring or continuous, or they can be non-renewable. Examples of renewable primary energy sources include geothermal, hydropower and solar. Nonrenewable primary energy sources include natural gas, oil, coal and uranium. Secondary energy sources are products of human technology, the most common of these energy sources is electricity.

Hydropower is a renewable, clean source of energy, but it can change the environment when damming rivers and creating reservoirs is necessary. Hydropower plants produce almost no emissions, because they do not need to burn any fuel for the energy that they produce. They also are located at the source of their energy supply, so there is negligible emissions from transporting this energy. Alternative Energy Sources
