There used to be as many as 8 different subspecies of tigers in the world. Hunting and habitat loss have driven three subspecies to extinction. The Bali, Javan and the Caspian tigers are gone from the earth. The Bengal, Indo-Chinese, South Chinese, Sumatran and Siberian tigers remain, but their numbers are declining .
Siberian Tigers live in Russia. The main threat to the Siberian tiger in Russia is logging which causes loss of habitat for the tigers and illegal hunting known as poaching. All tigers are listed as endangered. Once tigers numbered 50,000 to 80,000 world wide. Now, primarily because of hunting and loss of habitat, the numbers are estimated as low as 5,000 to 7,000.

  • SUMMARY MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS SUMMARY The 107 th Congress may consider whether to reauthorize and amend the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA). Major issues in recent years have focused on whether to incorporate further protection for property owners and reduce regulatory impacts, or whether to increase the protection afforded listed species. The ESA has been one of the more contentious environmental laws. This may stem from the strict substantive provisions of this law, which also can affect the use of non-federal lands. Under the ESA, certain species of plants and animals (both vertebrate and invertebrate) are listed as either "endangered" or "threatened" according to assessments of the risk of their extinction. Once a species is listed, powerful legal tools are available to aid the recovery of the species and the protection of its habitat. The ESA is administered by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for terrestrial and freshwater species and some marine mammals, and by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for marine and anadromous species. The U.S. Geological Survey's Biological Resources Division conducts research on species for which the FWS has management authority.

It is suggested that this is " impacting on the penguins' ability to get from their traditional food source (the sea) to the breeding ground because the distance was too great ". It is understood that around 150,000 breeding pairs of Emperor and Adelie penguins are now finding it increasingly difficult to feed their chicks ... North American biodiversity faces a crisis - so says the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation ("NACEC") noting that, per a January press release, "

Project on 'endangered species' yet to take off By P. Sunderarajan NEW DELHI APRIL 11 In 1987, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had directed the ZSI to conduct a survey to find out the status of 77 species of mammals, 46 of birds, 15 of reptiles, three of amphibians and a large number of invertebrates, which were reported to be endangered. But, the ZSI has initiated the survey with regard to only 11 species of mammals and even the truncated programme remains incomplete. The survey of just eight mammals has been completed. Highlighting the tardy progress in a recent report placed before Parliament, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has noted that the slow pace of progress was mainly because the ZSI has not provided enough manpower for it, though it was to be undertaken on a priority basis through deployment of scientists from the headquarters and the regional stations. The entire work was to be completed by 1995.

February 2002: Hope for the Forests?
In the past ten to fifteen years, more than 80% of orangutan habitat has been destroyed.
Megawati Sukarnoputri, Indonesia's first female president, has indicated that tackling illegal logging is firmly on the agenda and conservation groups hope that her administration will ensure good forest management and effective law enforcement to safeguard Indonesia's rainforest - a treasure-trove of biodiversity of global importance.
Megawati recently announced that Indonesia's forest concession holders, many of whom source timber illegally, will soon need a government-approved certificate of sustainable forest management if they want to continue operations. The Government also recently ordered a temporary ban on log exports in a desperate bid to curb rampant illegal logging.
It will take, however, more than legislation to ensure that Indonesia's tropical forests and their inhabitants are saved. Law enforcement must be stepped up and corruption tackled. Issues including the country's crippling national debt and the increasingly harsh trading terms faced by many of the world's poorest countries, intensified in a slowing global economy, will need to be addressed on a national and international level.
The situation is desperate, but there is still time to stop the complete loss of the Sumatran rainforest.

Sumatran Orangutan Society Miscellaneous Orangutan News December 2002 New Population of Orangutans Discovered in Borneo A previously unnoticed population of orangutans numbering between 1-2,500 has been found in lowland forest in East Kalimantan, Borneo, by researchers from the US-based conservation group Nature Conservancy. If confirmed, the new population will raise the estimated numbers of orangutans by about 10%, and would constitute one of the largest populations of orangutans, along with the population of Sumatran orangutans in the Leuser ecosystem. Orangutan numbers are estimated by counting their night nests and making calculations which take into account the quantity and age of the nests. Sumatran Orangutans amongst the Top 25 most endangered primates A report issued by Conservation International (CI) and the Primate Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) states that one in three of the planet's apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primate species is now threatened with imminent extinction - a very alarming statistic. The report noted that primate species and sub-species listed as "endangered" and "critically endangered" by the IUCN rose from 120 listed species in 2000 to 195 in 2002 - a rise of almost 63% over two years! Twenty-three of the primates identified as the most endangered are found in the world's most bio-diverse areas. These are the regions identified by Conservation International which, despite only accounting for a small percentage of the Earth's surface, contain over 60% of all the earth's flora and fauna. These regions include Indo-Burma, Madagascar, the Guinean Forests of West Africa and Brazil's Atlantic Forests.
