el salvador is the smallest country in Central Americaroughly the sizeof Massachusetts. It is 260 kilometers of Pacific coastline.
    http://www.foshay.k12.ca.us/Curriculum/TechAcad/Projects/Semester Projects/1997-
E l Salvador is the smallest country in Central America-roughly the size of Massachusetts. It is 260 kilometers of Pacific coastline. It's conceivable to drive the length of the country in a day, although the roads may dictate otherwise. El Salvador's size and shape has earned it the nickname El Pulgarcito (The little Thumb) of Central America. El Salvador is divided roughly into three geographical regions running east to west. The Sierra Madre mountaain chain fills the interior highlands bordering Honduras and Guatemala. The mountains are low and old, and are sparsely populated. The central region consists of high valleys separated by mountains and volcanoes. Most of El Salvador's major cities and its best farmland, including many coffee plantations on the lower volcanic slopes, are located here. The coastal plain is narrow but fertile, dotted with a few port cities and farms and lined with beaches. The coastal mountain range borders it to the north. Geology El Salvador, along with the rest of Middle America (a region comprising mainly Mexico and Central America), is one of the most seismologically active regions on earth, situated atop three of the large tectonic plates that constitute the earth's surface. The motion of these plattes causes the area's earthquake and volcanic activity. El Salvador has a long history of destructive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. San Salvador was destroyed in 1756 and 1854, and it suffered heavy damage in the 1919, 1982, and 1986 tremors. The country has over twenty volcanoes, although only two, San Miguel and Izalco, have been active in recent years. Violent eruptions are rare.

Travelers should be aware that airlines operating out of Comalapa International Airport require that passengers boarding flights bound for the United States have appropriate travel documents. Under airline policy, certificates of naturalization and birth certificates are not accepted by the airlines as travel documents. Passengers must have a valid, current U.S. passport to board flights to return to the United States, and information to the contrary should be disregarded. U.S. citizens traveling to El Salvador for any reason without valid passports must apply for a passport in person at the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador before attempting to return to the United States. Citizens applying for passports overseas are reminded that original proof of citizenship and identity is required before a passport can be issued. Photographic proof of identity is especially important for young children because of the high incidence of fraud involving children.
