The northern mountains, composed of the Metapán and the Chalatenango chains, form the border with Honduras in the north and descend in the south to the interior plain of the Lempa River valley, running generally east to west; the valley then rises to meet higher volcanic ranges to the south. El Salvador: Culture and Geography [Click on Image to enlarge Details] El Salvador is dominated by a chain of volcanoes that runs down its center from west to east. These volcanic peaks contain many active cones and volcanic lakes. The mountains slope on either side to fertile highlands and plains (the western highlands are where Cloudnine Coffee is grown). To the south, the land drops off into a narrow coastal plain where fertile soils, rain, and high temperatures make it ideal for cultivation. There is a broad plain to the north of the highlands; terminated by the edge of the Northern Sierra, the mountain range that spreads north into Honduras and Guatemala. El Salvador’s climate is dominated by the rainy season from May to October, during which heavy rains called temporales drench the country. Since El Salvador hugs the Pacific Coast, the rains are less extreme as in other countries on the isthmus. The hottest part of country borders the Pacific Ocean. In the highlands, including San Salvador, the capitol, the temperature is cooler, but the rains are stronger. December is the coolest month of the year, although during the two-three months before the rainy season, things really heat up. Culture El Salvador’s population is 95% mestizo (European mixed with Amerindian). Spanish is universal although the majority of children begin taking English classes early in school.
