EGYPT: Government Offers To Help Kenya Exploit AGOA Trade Benefits
he Egyptian government plans to remove barriers to Kenyan textile exports. Its Minister for Economy and Foreign Trade Youssef Boutros Ghali said his government was also eager to set up plants to help Kenya exploit the African Growth and Opportunity Act trade benefits. The minister was speaking in Nairobi yesterday when he led the first foreign delegation to State House since election of a new government. He delivered a message from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to President Mwai Kibaki, congratulating him and Kenyans for conducting peaceful elections. "This has proved that Africa is dynamic and capable of bringing itself to the 21st century." Mr Mubarak assured President Kibaki of Egyptian support in his government's objectives, especially in health and employment. He said Mr Kibaki had proposed an increase in the value-adding threshold for intra-Comesa trade from the present 45 per cent as a way of Africa avoiding being a transit point for goods from Asia and other continents.

The article, in the August 24, 1998 issue of the Egyptian government newspaper Roz al-Yusuf, asserted that blood being shipped from an Austrian company to Arab nations "had been transferred to Israel and 'treated' by it with the injection of substances such as the AIDS virus, hepatitus B and bilharzia and then returned to Austria" for re-routing to the Arab world. The article suggested that the Israeli action was part of Israel's "warfare against the Arab states and Islam". Similarly, an article in the January 23, 1997 issue of the Egyptian government newspaper Al Ahram asserted that "Israel is behind an attempt to intentionally infect Palestinians with AIDS." (Ha'aretz, Jan. 24, 1997) Another Egyptian government newspaper, the Egyptian Gazette, claimed that young Egyptians joined a devil-worship cult "after participating in an orgy arranged by Israeli intelligence agents at a beach resort on the Red Sea. (Washington Post, Feb.8, 1997) The Egyptian government weekly Ruz al-Yussef claimed that young Egyptian devil-worshipers "drink blood and dance in a circle around a Star of David with a candle in each point." (Washington Post, Feb. 8, 1997)
