An introduction to Ecuador

Highlands ... E-Mail
Ecuador offers little archeological evidence of its preHispanic civilizations. Nonetheless, its most ancient artifacts remnants of the Valdivia culture found along the coast north of the modern city of Santa Elena in Guayas Provincedate from as early as 3500 B.C.. Other major coastal archaeological sites are found in the provinces of Manabí and Esmeraldas; major sites in the Sierra are found in Carchi and Imbabura provinces in the north, Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces in the middle of the Andean highlands, and Cañar, Azuay, and Loja provinces in the south. Nearly all of these sites are dated in the last 2,000 years. Large parts of Ecuador, including almost all of the Oriente, however, remain unknown territory to archaeologists. The first European to set foot on the territory of modern-day Ecuador was probably Bartolomé Ruiz de Estrada, the pilot for Pizarro on his second voyage, who pushed southward while Pizarro explored the Colombian coast and Almargo returned to Panama for supplies. Pizarro himself landed on the Ecuadorian coast later during his exploratory voyage and traveled as far as Tumbes in the extreme north of present-day Peru, in defiance of official orders to return to Panama. F rom the inn, located approximately 10 minutes and 4km from Quito. Many points of cultural interest can be visited. Through research undertaken by Ecuador's Banco Central and various archaeologists, a pre-Inca route (1500 B.C.), has been identified. The route, dating back to approximately 1500 B.C., was used by members of the Cotocollao tribe who traded their highland products with Amazon tribes, such as the Yumbos and Niguas. Utensils dating back to this time have been found in the area. Our knowledgeable guides provide full explanations during the tour. Improvements were made to the road in the 18th century during the famous equator expedition. The expedition led by the Ecuadorian scientist, Pedro Vincente Maldonado and the French scientist, Charles-Marie de La Condamine led to the determination of the exact location of the equator. The road opened the area up for the first community, Singuna (now Hosteria San Jorge) to settle there.

Located just below the Equator, the weather varies very little month to month. You may experience rain at any time, which keeps everything so green. Generally, rain comes in short 20-minute bursts, then the sun shines again. Sometimes, the dense canopy overhead will virtually shield you from the deluge. It is warm in the jungle during the day, but not as hot as Hollywood would make you believe. At night, it can get chilly enough for a sweater.

The Black Sheep Inn
We've built our home in the High Andes they were crazy! The longer we stayed in Chugchilan, the more we realized it was the right place for us. We finally pulled ourselves away, teary eyed and promised the family we would come back in a couple years to buy their land. Dreams Come True Now, almost eight years later, we look back and marvel at what we have done. It has been an incredible learning experience. We have both become "Jack-of-all-Trades", installing electrical and water systems, learning permaculture farming techniques, making adobe bricks, cutting trees for firewood and beams, building furniture, and learning how to run a business in Ecuador. We are now accomplished architects, we have earned doctorate degrees from the International School of Trial and Error (ISTE). Our dissertations were filled with many major errors! With an average of over five guests per night at The Black Sheep Inn and the village of Chugchilan are now ‘on the map.’ Our dream became reality. Community Involvement
Chugchilan has not lost its charm due to the influx of tourists. We are deeply involved with the community. Michelle teaches English and basic computer skills in the local high school. We have received and donated seven computers and a copy machine to the community. We have begun collecting spanish reading books to start a small public library. Tourism has provided a new source of income for the village and the people are friendlier than ever. Humberto Ortega now has a thriving business leading horseback rides and two local families have also opened basic hostels. Chugchilan has something for everyone.

ECUADOR
Ecuador is a republic on the northern Pacific Coast of South America, bordered on the north by Colombia and on the south and east by Peru. It also includes the Galapagos Islands, off the Pacific Coast. Ecuador was a Spanish Colony until 1822. Today it is the South American Nation where traditional Society remains most nearly intact. Since the discovery of petroleum, however, Ecuador's developing economy is bringing increasing modernization to the nation.
LAND
Ecuador is divided into three distinct physical areas, which also differ culturally and politically from one another. The coastal region, or costa, has a typical climate with an average temperature of 24 deg. C (75 deg. F). Centering on the port city of Guayaquil, the region contains about 35% of the countries total population, Most of the country's tropical export products are grown here, The second area is the mountain region - the high Andes, or sierra - centering on the capital city of, Quito, which is located at an elevation of 2,8034 m (9,222 ft.). The climate here is temperate, moderated by the elevation, with an annual average temperature of 19 deg. C. (66 deg. F.) The region is subject to occasional, moderate earthquakes. The region's agriculture produces mainly grain and meat for domestic consumption.
PEOPLE
The population of Ecuador is ethnically and racially mixed, About 40% of the population is Mestizo (of mixed Indian and European Ancestry) and another 40% is Indian. The remainder of the population is about equally divided between Europeans(whites) and Negroes or mulattoes. The costa has the most heterogeneous population, whereas the population of the oriente (Ecuadorian Amazon Rain Forest) is almost entirely Indian. Spanish is the official language and is spoken by most of the population, Several Indian languages, including Quechua, are also spoken. More than 90% of the population say is Roman Catholic but most do not practice it in actuality.

http://www.pinsaqui.com/en/htm/history.htm
The colonial hacienda was originally constructed in 1790, and spectacularly restored after an earthquake that shook the region in 1867. The building originally housed a textile workshop, employing nearly 1000 local weavers and spinners. In the late 1800's, the unique creations of these workers became internationally renowned, when the "bayetas", a special fabric typical of Pinsaqui, arrived at the World's Fair in Chicago.
The tradition of the Hacienda remains strong in the live lunch time musical events. Local native people ( ) come to the Hacienda and entertain listeners with their traditional music and warm characters, intimately sharing their culture, through verse and instruments, with the guests.
When groups of guests are staying at the Hacienda, the owners provide a special treat. In the early evening, all of the guests are invited to the bar area for a welcome drink. Once all of the guests have gathered, the owner rides a stallion into the bar and tells a personal story detailing the history of the hacienda. There is also a unique opportunity to sit upon the horse for a picture.
