History and Government
History:
The Liberal/Conservative stranglehold on domestic politics was broken in 1988, when presidential elections brought Rodrigo Borja Cevallos of the Izquierda Democratica (Democratic Left) party to office, at the head of a coalition government. Borja was followed by Sixto Duran, of the newly formed right wing Republican Unity Party, in 1992. Political and economic turbulence plagued the Duran government from the first; a major corruption scandal in 1995 destroyed its remaining credibility. In May 1996, the election was won by the charismatic and eccentric Bucaram Ortiz of the Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano
Government: The constitution was approved by national referendum in 1978, taking effect in 1979. The President, elected for a term of four years, holds executive power. He is assisted by the Vice President and a Cabinet, which includes 12 Ministers and a Secretary General. Legislative power is unicameral and resides in the House of Representatives, with 69 members; there are 12 national representatives and the remainder represent the provinces.

Ecuador's History
Centers Around Conflict and Loss

Ecuador's coastal region and the high Andean basins were inhabited by Indian tribes when the first Europeans reached the area's Pacific coast in 1526. The Inca Empire extended over the highland region to an area near Quito. The Spanish colonists established themselves in the country in 1534, and ruled for nearly three centuries. The first uprising against Spanish rule took place in 1809.
Finally, on May 24, 1822, independence was won by the armies of Simon Bolivar, with the key battles in Ecuador lead by Antonio Jose de Sucre, one of Bolivar's field marshals. But the struggles were not over. After an unsuccessful federation with Colombia and Venezuela, Ecuador became an independent nation in 1830. During the first century of its independence, Ecuador changed its contitutions 13 times, and only few of its presidents had managed to serve a full four-year term. The economic development associated with the cocoa boom at the end of the nineteenth and the first quarter of the twentieth century helped to improve and stabilize the country's administration, despite the frequent turnover in rulers -18 presidents between 1897 and 1934, and 25 presidents between 1934 and 1988 Refounded as the colonial capital, Quito became famous in the 17th and 18th centuries as an art center. Today, the old colonial center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its beauty.

"The story of Frontiers" "The history of the Republic of Ecuador is the story of frontiers: the frontier of the great pre-columbian empire of the Incas; the frontier of the Amazon basin; the frontier of the hemispheres, from the country's position astride the equator. (The frontier with Peru is still being disputed today almost 500 years after the empire was split by civil war between the Inca brothers Atahualpa and Huascar). Most significant is Ecuador's role on the frontier of modern science, for it was in the Ecuadorian islands of the Galapagos that Charles Darwin first formulated his theory of evolution." The following section will take you through a brief tour of the history of Ecuador from the rise of the Incas, to the fall of their empire, through the present. At first they were sold locally within ecuador, it was many years later before they Ifyou want anymore information about the history and types of Panama hats
    http://www.panamahats.co.uk/panhats.htm
THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE PANAMA HAT The weaving of hats "Paja Toquilla" has been known ever since the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Natives from the Ecuadorian province of Manabi have been weaving hats with Paja Toquilla straw for many years. Using fibres from palm leaves (Scientific name of Carludouica Palmata) the residents of Jipijapa and MonteCristi used to hand weave what they call Tocas, a type of straw hat wrapped around their heads for protection from the sun. The finest of those Tocas were later called Toquillas, this being the origin for the name of hats made with Paja Toquilla.
Many years later the art of weaving was taught in Cuenca expanding very quickly throughout the provinces of Azuay and Cañar (now the largest centres of hat production in Ecuador). At first they were sold locally within Ecuador, it was many years later before they actually started to export their hats. Buyers shipped them to Panama during the building of the Panama canal, where they were worn by the workers for protection from the sun. Since then the hats became known throughout the world as the Panama hat. A new generation dedicated entirely to the process of developing new styles, colours and quality, so that they could offer the finest of what is a true work of art based upon Ecuadorian folklore.
Today we are even more aware of the importance of protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun and the Panama hat is an elegant solution.

These peoples had developed social organizations with their own beliefs, rites, and ceremonies and an economy based primarily on hunting, gathering, and agriculture. Traces of their existence can be found in archaeological sites located all across Ecuador. This era, which can be divided into four periods (Paleo-Indian or Pre-ceramic, Formative, Regional Development, Integration, and Incan), lasted until the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores in the XVI century. History of Ecuador
    A. Spanish Rule The Spanish first landed on the coast of what is now Ecuador in 1526, led by Bartolomé Ruiz. Spanish conquistadores under Francisco Pizarro invaded the country in 1532 and two years later were in control of the area. Pizarro, acting in the name of the Spanish crown, appointed his brother Gonzalo governor of Quito in 1540. A short time later Francisco Pizarro was assassinated, and Gonzalo Pizarro led a rebellion against Spain. His independent rule lasted until 1548, when forces of the Crown defeated his army at Jaquijaguana and he was executed. Colonial Ecuador was at first a territory directly under the rule of the Viceroyalty of Peru, one of the two major administrative divisions of 16th-century Spanish America. In 1563 Quito, as Ecuador was then called, became a presidency, or a judicial district of the viceroyalty. From 1717 to 1723 the Quito presidency was under the authority of the Viceroyalty of New Granada in Bogotá, but it was then returned to the authority of the viceroy of Peru until 1739, when it reverted to New Granada.

I divided Ecuador's history in 4 major eras
    Aboriginal Era
    30000 BC - 1532 AD)

comprises the time, when the continent got populated and before the arrival of the Spaniards. Many small Indian cultures were spread out throughout the country with commerce happening between the coastal Indians to the Highland Indians and into the Amazon. Agriculture was the mainstay of many but they also knew the use of pottery and metalwork. Beginning before 1500 conquest and influence by the Inca Empire, mostly felt in the Andes region.
    Spanish Colony

In 1531 Spaniards, who were already established in Mexico and the Caribbean Islands, landed from Panama by boat on an South American shore. After defeating the Inca Empire and subjugating the native population, the Spanish crown established their rule over the continent with help of Spanish colonists and the Catholic church. Quito was an important cultural and administrative center in the colonial times.
Independence ( Forces for the independence of Spanish America from the mother country, led by Simon Bolivar and Mariscal Sucre defeated the loyalists and established independent republics as known today throughout the continent. Governments frequently changed from elected presidents to military dictatorships and back.

As mentioned in the introduction, Indian natives lived there since the times of the Incas (around 1500 AD) but not much is known about them.
It is assumed that they dedicated themselves to agriculture and traded their surplus with surrounding indigenous communities.
The first written historical fact about the crater is that in the land inside the crater passed into the possession of the monks of the Dominican Church Order . At that time in Ecuador's history the Catholic church was the biggest land owner in the country and the various religious orders ran huge agricultural enterprises. Natives worked in those big haciendas owned by the church or individual Spaniards as huasipungeros (term for rural Indian serfs). Although they received a modest remuneration for their work, they were dependent on their patron (term for owner) for their well-being. Not only did they have no choice as to buy their necessities in the hacienda stores but as they were outside the legal frame work of the Spanish colony, were under the benevolence of their patron . That particular hacienda in the crater dedicated itself to the cultivation of the land, growing cereals and corn and to the raising of cattle. It is also well-documented that the
