Model United Nations "The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic has literally created a revolution among the Dominican community utilizing educational simulations of the United Nations. Young Dominicans realize that solutions exist to lives most devastating problems while learning that cooperation and compromise can be achieved in multilaterally forums." Dr. Greg Julian , Professor of Political Science, Pace University, University of Pennsylvania, Model United Nations Conference Model United Nations is considered to be one of the best educational tools to prepare young people for a more global world. The 21st century will confront young people with issues that affe ct every country. The world is becoming more interdependent every day. It is important for students and teachers to utilize Model U.N. for its effective and interactive way of teaching young people and preparing them for the 21st century. Model U.N. is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly, U.N. Security Council, or other U.N. multilateral body. Participation catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. In Model U.N., students step into the shoes of ambassadors of U.N. member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, to debate current issues on the organization's vast agenda. The students, known as "delegates," prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the U.N.'s rules of procedure-all in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth.

Moving Day 1928
On November 11, 1928, the Federal Radio Commission tried to restore government control over broadcasting, which had be eroded in the 1920s, after a couple of court cases, which failed to decisively end "frequency jumpers." The goals of the FRC were:
  • To reduce interference, and "clutter" on the air. To provide better access to the airwaves to smaller cities, and "underserved" areas. A mechanism to get rid of the "temporary" and "portable" stations.
General Order #40, issued on August 30, 1928 outlined the proposed shifting, to be accomplished at 3 A.M. on November 11, 1928. In general, it worked, and the airwaves were much "cleaner." From Thomas White:

O A Resources The problem with Haiti
S uffice to say that between Haiti becoming the first black independent nation in the Caribbean (in 1804), and the fear of a similar slave revolt occurring in Santo Domingo, the Spanish ruling elite was led to deny, demonise and suppress African culture within their sphere of influence. Dominicans became increasingly euro-centric and tended to ignore or downplay African influence because of anti-Haitian sentiment. Until as recently as the 1970s, some Dominican musicologists failed to acknowledge African contributions to the merengue genre. W hen merengue first appeared in the salons of the Dominican Republic in the 1850s, it encountered heavy resistance from the intellectual elite. The prevailing dance of the time was the

Dominican Republic The Dominican Republicand Santo Domingo in particularis steeped in rich history. The country is the site of European discovery of the New World and as such has witnessed numerous invasions and settlements, in addition to economic and political turmoil throughout this century. Santo Domingo, the seaside capital of the Dominican Republic, offers visitors a fascinating alternative to the typical Caribbean fare of sun, fun and beaches. As the oldest city in the New World, this colorful capital takes you back five centuries, to the days of Columbus’ discovery. Today, Santo Domingo is a bustling international metropolis. The Dominican Republic is a sportsman's paradise. Visitors will enjoy everything from exciting water sports to championship The beaches of the Dominican Republic are as idyllic as any in the Caribbean: powdery white sand studded with palm trees, often stretching unbroken for miles and lapped by the crystalline waters of the Caribbean.

FAMILY AND BUSINESS AMONG MASTER ARTISANS AND ENTREPRENEURS: The Case of Nineteenth-Century Vienna
    Josef Ehmer
This essay considers the relationship between family and business among economically successful artisans who were on the way to attaining the status of industrial bourgeoisie. For nineteenth-century master artisans as well as for entrepreneurs, the family was an important means of economic success. The connection between family and business, however, manifested itself in various ways. Cross-sectional household structures show two distinct patterns, which might be interpreted as "traditional" and "modern" family forms. Yet the study of family biographies and of intergenerational succession casts doubt upon dichotomous perspectives and points toward complex relations between family strategies, kinship networks, and the guilds.

    HISTORY AND PURPOSE
"Altos de Chavón's Regional Museum of Archaeology stands as a tribute to the first artists and artisans of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic's cultural and artistic legacy is eloquently documented through dramatically showcased artifacts and handsome silk-screened panels. Particular emphasis is placed on the daily life of the early peoples who lived in Hispaniola's great eastern plains. Over the course of forty years Samuel Pión assembled the magnificent pre-Columbian collection, which consists of more than 30,000 objects, many of them found along the banks of the river Chavón. The Charles and Yvette Bluhdorn Charitable Trust acquired custody of these treasures and later transferred the custodial rights to the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation. The Museum of Archaeology was inaugurated in 1981 to house the collection. Ritual and utilitarian objects, arranged in chronological and stylistic order, document the cultural evolution of indigenous societies from preceramic to Taino, the island's dominant culture at the time of the conquistadors. The simple elegance of line and grace of form in Taino art strike the more than 20,000 annual visitors as surprisingly contemporary. In addition to conserving and exhibiting these valuable artifacts, the museum is a dynamic educational center for scientific and cultural investigation. Detailed informational material is circulated to schools and community centers locally. A comprehensive library houses volumes on Caribbean history, archaeology, anthropology, and art. An outreach program sponsors conferences, temporary exhibits, field trips, audio-visual presentations, and seminars to encourage scholarly exchange. In the interest of promoting Dominican indigenous cultures internationally, major pieces from the museum's permanent collection of Taino culture travelled to the Seville 1992 World's Fair. The museum has also been invited to lend pieces for exhibition in other cultural institutions worldwide."

    Regional Influences on Belize
lthough Belize was a British colony until September 21, 1981, the United States of America had a strong influence on Belize. Its influence was actually greater than that of Britain or any other country in the region. In 1935, the British Governor of Belize, Sir Alan Burns, wrote: "The whole colony is, however, largely influenced by the comparative proximity of the U.S. and the people as a whole are more Americans than British in their outlook. This may be due to a limited extent to the cinema, but is more directly attributable to the influence of the trade and education." The U.S.'s interest and influence on Belize began well over a hundred years ago. In order to understand its growth, it is first necessary to study the expansion of U.S. influence throughout the region.

August 17 - 19th were great mile markers in the history of the Dominican church. We are thrilled to report the greatest outpouring of the Holy Ghost that the United Pentecostal Church has ever seen in our country in one crusade! There was an attendance of approximately 2500 in the largest service!
Besides the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, another notable miracle took place during the crusade. On Friday morning, the 17th, the local newspapers published that tropical storm "Chantel" would be passing through that night bringing torrential downpours. The church bound together and prayed that God would not allow this storm to hinder our outdoor crusade.
