Buy the book now! FAQ's By: Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited" Question: My husband is a narcissist and constantly depressed. Is there any connection between these two facts? Answer: Depression is a form of aggression. Transformed, this aggression is directed at the depressed person rather than at his environment. This regime of repressed and mutated aggression is a characteristic of both narcissism and depression. The only valid distinction seems to be phenomenological: some depressives slow down (psychomotor retardation), their appetite, sex life (libido) and sleep (known together as the vegetative) functions are notably perturbed. Behaviour patterns change or disappear altogether. These patients feel dead: they are anhedonic (find pleasure or excitement in nothing) and dysphoric (sad).

Symptom lists are not complete , but are instead summarized versions of official diagnostic criteria. Some of the categories listed below are not actual diagnoses, but rather parts of a diagnosis (e.g.- the descriptions of "episodes"). These symptom lists have been culled from current diagnostic criteria most commonly used in the United States by mental health professionals. The lists are divided into three broad categories: adult childhood , and personality disorders; some disorders may fall under more than one category.

    Q. I am the mother of four sons, two of whom have bipolar disorder. One of my sons has for the past few months, been in some kind of relapse that involves being very delusional. This week, Jaime, his younger brother, his therapist, and I will be having a joint meeting. I keep hoping that something that is said at this meeting will reach him. Here is my question: What is the best way to communicate with someone who is delusional and who also "lacks insight" about his situation? Also, is there any literature which deals specifically on this topic? I did take the 12-week course taught by NAMI, and I will be utilizing some of the suggestions I found there. Just trying to get more ideas. A. . I do not know of any way to get through to a delusional person. Since they do have impaired thinking, keep your answers short, concrete, and to the point. If anything will get through, this has the best chance.

This formulation emphasizes the degree to which the borderline person's manifest psychopathology can be understood in terms of relationships to major objects.
The term major object will be used to refer to any significant current relationship perceived as necessary . In the following section, the borderline person's current relationships to the three levels of psychological functioning are observed. Lower levels of psychological function emerge regressively and act to preserve a sense of contact with and control over major object relationships.

Question Posted By: Becky on Sunday, February 27, 2000
Me and my boyfriend have been living together and are supposed to get married in June. Last month, after eating dinner, he started whispering and wanted me and my daughter to go outside and talk to him in the street. He was thinking the house was bugged and that his acquaintances are trying to "set him up". He does not use drugs, but suddenly he is so fearful that everybody does drugs and he is constantly pointing out people "who he thinks" is working for the police or trying to get to him.
Answer Posted By: HFHS MD - RG on Monday, February 28, 2000
Paranoid thoughts may be caused by different diagnosis. Schizophrenia is associated with auditory or visual hallucanations and /or bizarre behavior. Their delusions may have a bizarre content like aliens are coming to get him. Paranoid delusional disorder are nonbizarre delusions involving real life situations like what you mention. Paranoid Personality disorder is a pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others and may present in variety of contexts.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ... Schizophrenia This section of the web site cotains information about some of the most common mental health conditions. We hope to add information about more problems over time. The term 'mental health condition' covers a very wide spectrum from the daily worries and sometimes grief as part of everyday living to the most distressing, suicidal depression or complete loss of touch with reality. A mental health condition only becomes a serious problem when it interferes with a person's ability to cope or function on a day to day basis or when a person's behaviour becomes a problem to others. The more extreme forms of mental illness can be very disturbing for the person concerned and for those close to them, who are endeavouring to support that person. However, while mental distress can be most disruptive to people's lives, with early and appropriate treatment and support, an increasing number of people are able to lead active and fulfilling lives.
