"Hawaiian Nights" show takes you to Polynesia
By: Kenny Ehman Take a trip through Polynesia with the Renaissance Resort's "Hawaiian Nights" dinner and dance show. The special outdoor production lets you sit under the stars, while being entertained by the "Tihati Dancers", who come straight from Hawaii. You will also be delighted by the wide selection of fine food and desserts. The price is affordable, and it is a great place to have a night out with friends or family. It is one of the best nightly shows offered on Okinawa. The "Hawaiian Nights" show is offered twice a night, every day except for Wednesdays. Show times begin at 7 pm and 8:30 pm, with each show lasting about forty five minutes. Dinner starts 30 minutes prior to each show, with a huge "all you can eat" buffet that lasts through the entire performance. You can enjoy several fine dishes, with selections from Hawaii that include grilled mahi mahi, pai ai, aku poki, lomi lomi salmon, and roasted pig. There are also several other excellent choices to satisfy your hunger. You can choose from steamed chicken, spicy sausage, pasta, short rib steak, sweet potato, and salad. The dessert area has plenty of tropical fruits and ice cream to help you end a perfect dinner. In between dances, you will also be entertained by the antics and comedy of the dancers. They not only dance, but they involve the audience in their performance whenever possible. They develop a good rapport with the crowd right away, breaking down cultural barriers. You get the feeling that each one of the dancers really enjoys showing you the dances and culture of Polynesia.

Hula auwana, or modern hula, is the dance form most people are familiar with, combining dance and music for a more playful, joyous and spirited recounting of contemporary life in the islands. Because Missionaries who arrived in the islands in the 1820s believed hula to be too suggestive, they outlawed it as a pagan practice. However, during the reign of King David Kalakaua (1874-1891), there was a resurgence of the old Hawaiian customs, including sports activities and hula. "Hula is the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people," he proclaimed. Dances of the South Pacific have meaning beyond words and are a celebration of life and a source of enjoyment for many. In Hawaii, hula was the method in which ancient Hawaiians passed along the stories and legends of their culture to subsequent generations. E-mail: Dances of the South Pacific have meaning beyond words and are a celebration of life and a source of enjoyment for many. In Hawaii, hula was the method in which ancient Hawaiians passed along the stories and legends of their culture to subsequent generations. The native people of New Zealand have a proud history and tradition through their Maori dance. Visitors may be familiar with "poi balls" and sticks they see the dancers throwing. Others remember the men perform in their warlike angry dances that are full of life. From Tahiti, the colourful aparima medleys and impressive Tahitian oteas continue to amaze audiences. Whether the dances describe ancient warriors and goddesses or everyday life on the islands, each dance describes a story about the culture of the people from around the South Pacific. Traditionally, the dances were conceived to thank the gods who aided the islanders, to celebrate good fortune, and to pay respect to the various chiefs. Because there was no written language, Polynesian dance and its accompanying music preserved various stories and rituals of the Indigenous people. Consequently, the dancing represented today is as much a celebration of life as it is a proud statement of cultural awareness.
