H AWAIIAN H ISTORY H AWAII'S M ILITARY ... IMELINE H AWAIIAN T RADITIONS Music and dance
To Hawaiians, hula or Hawaiian dance, is as much a celebration of life as it is a proud statement of cultural identity. According to legend, hula originated when Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, commanded her younger sister Laka to dance. Schools were begun in honor of the goddess of the dance and temples were dedicated to her. Dancers lived on the temple grounds, subjected to strenuous training regimes and kapu (taboos) befitting the sacred art of hula. Hula was the method in which ancient Hawaiians passed along the stories and legends of their culture to subsequent generations. Hula kahiko, or ancient hula, uses dance and chanting to relate the proud and somber history, customs, ceremonies and traditions of ancient Hawaii and her people. Hula auwana, or modern hula, is the dance form most people are familiar with, combining dance and music for a more playful, joyous and spirited recounting of contemporary life in the islands. Missionaries who arrived in the islands in the 1820s thought the hula to be a little too suggestive and outlawed it as a pagan practice. However, during the reign of King David Kalakaua (1874-1891), there was a resurgeance of the old Hawaiian customs, including sports activities and hula. "Hula is the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people," he once said.

The recordings on this compact disc were originally made between 1923 and 1989. They were compiled and annotated by Elizabeth Tatar for the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in coordination with the publication, Hula Pahu: Hawaiian Drum Dances (Bishop Museum Bulletin in Anthropology number 3, 1991). Featuring the voices of Manu Boyd , Samuel Pua Ha`aheo, Tom Hiona, Brenda Lehua Hulihe`e, Hoakalei Kamau`u, Keakaokalo Kanahele, James Kapihe Palea Kuluwaimaka, Anthony La`akapu Lenchanko, Hau`oli Lewis, Noenoe Zuttermeister Lewis, Keahi Luahine, Mary Kawena Pukui , Ka`upena Wong, and Kau`i Zuttermeister.
"Hawaiian Drum Dance Chants: Sounds of Power in Time" CD (1989) The preservation of the traditions of hula pahu was due to handful of masters, who in the early twentieth century devoted their energies toward perpetuating the drum dance traditions they inherited. The artistry of these masters Katherine Keakaokala Kanahele, Keahi Luahine and Samuel Pua Ha`aheo and the individuals they taught, all acknowledged masters on their own, is presented in this recording. The mele hula are arranged chronologically according to a regional tradition identified by the master's name. The first part presents a family of contemporary masters, themselves representing three generations of hula pahu expertise descended from Samuel Pua Ha`aheo. The second part presents historic recordings of hula pahu performed by the earliest generation of masters known to have established the hula pahu traditions perpetuated today.

HALAU HULA O KE'ALA LAUA'E San Diego, California
Welcome, this is the home page of Halau Hula O Ke'ala Laua'e. Feel free to browse our website and visit us anytime.
Our Mission
Since 1991 the Federal Census Bureau has reported that there are more people of native-hawaiian ancestry residing in the Southern California & Nevada, than anywhere else in the world, including the State of Hawaii and the numbers are increasing. It is the mission of this halau to provide those who are interested with an education in the history, sociology, language, song and dance of the native inhabitants of the hawaiian island group located in the Polynesian triangle of South Pacific. To share the concepts of "Aloha and Lokahi" in a fun and wholesome, traditionally-hawaiian atmosphere. We emphasize in reaching out to those displaced Kanaka-ma'ole in the mainland, with the hope of instilling in them the desire to return home and reclaim their heritage and homelands.
Biography
Halau Hula o Ke’ala Laua’e first opened its doors in 1989 and was founded by Douglas and Kuuipo Grube (a husband and wife team). They started with just six kaikamahine, all of them first cousins to each other.
