History of the Hula
Music and dance have always played an important role in Hawaiian culture. In old Hawaii the mele (chant) was used to remember and pass down myths of gods and the deeds of the powerful and heroic. Often the mele was accompanied by percussion instruments, such as the ipu (a single or double dried gourd that is hollowed out and pounded both on the ground and the palm and Links to Your Luau

46. The Cultural Significance Of Hawaiian Dance In Japan

The Cultural Significance of Hawaiian Dance in Japan.
Margaret Ochner
Faculty Advisor: Scott Littleotn I plan to study the cultural significance of Hawaiian dance (hula) in Japan. A component of Japanese culture comprises their tendency to 'adopt,' 'adapt,' and become 'adept' at a foreign theory or project. Is the presence of hula in Japan simply another form of the Japanese tendency to 'borrow' foreign ideas and copy them without really understanding them? If the hula is merely a hobby, how are Japanese groups able to compete withand sometimes defeatHawaiian groups?
Thus, questions remain to what extent the cultural significance of hula is being perpetuated in Japan by these Japanese halau (dance groups) and, if so, how it is done. I intend to discover what the motivations of the Japanese participants are in learning hula, how hula fits culturally into Japan, and what hula means to the Japanese. If the Japanese find hula culturally important to perpetuate, do they fully understand the history and significance behind the songs and dance itself? This is a central issue of my proposed research.
The effect of modernization and globalization has caused our world to become 'smaller,' and increasingly cause cultural diffusions, like hula in Japan, to occur. The question arises as to what extent another culture or groups of people adopt a foreign culture and maintain its 'genuine' self. Moreover, how do these newly introduced cultures 'fit' into other cultures? I hope to answer, or begin to discover the answers, to these broad questions of what 'culture' means in this rapidly modernized world by examining the case of hula in Japan.

Hawaiian Music and Dance Festival
At International House this Friday, three of the finest Hawaiian slack key guitarists will participate in a grand event titled Aloha! The Hawaiian Music and Dance Festival. The patriarch of the players, spiritually, is 70-year-old Raymond Kane. Say that KAH-neh, which you might already know if you are a fan of local filmmaker Robert Mugge's work. Kane was so large a part of Hawaiian Rainbow that his portion of the soundtrack was used to make an entire LP. If you saw the film, or maybe got to the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife the year that Hawaii was the focus, you'll recall Kane as a jovial gent, full of good fun and high spirits. From a recent phone conversation, it's obvious that none of that has changed. In the movie, Kane offered the easiest explanation of the slack key guitar's name and evolution. In the 1800s, the cowboys came to Hawaii with guitars. The Hawaiians liked them, but also liked the challenge of different tunings. Kane explained that everybody starts off with the Taro Patch tuning: DGDGBD. He says he always returns to that one, since it is the "master tuning."

But there is now an increased interest in preserving the beauty andgrace of hawaiian dance, chant, and instruments among hawaiians.

Music of Hawaii: Dance, Instruments, and Songs
Long ago, the Hawaiian storytelling dance form known as hula was an important vehicle for the oral history and religion of the Polynesian people of Hawaii. After almost disappearing during the mid-1800s (because of outside influences), hula dancing is once again an integral part of the culture of the Hawaiian people who celebrate their island ancestry.
Many hula dances involve movement set to chanted or sung poetry with instruments. The whole body is used in the dance, but the arm and hand movements tell the story. Hula dances often feature some kind of musical instrument or a combination of instruments. Some dances are performed without instruments; in this case the dancers might use their hands as percussion instruments.
Native Hawaiian instruments are generally constructed from natural materials found in the island environment, such as seashells, bamboo, logs, gourds, coconut shells, animal skins and teeth, and rocks. The following lists some Hawaiian instruments:
The conch shell is a large seashell played like a ceremonial fanfare trumpet. When blown strongly, it can be heard for miles.

The following are brief descriptions of some of the dances and songs you’ll experience in a "Drums of Polynesia" show... OTE'A (Tahitian Drum Dances) Greeting drum dances welcoming guests. Basically, these drums are made from hollowed out logs in various shapes and sizes. The bigger the log the deeper the sound. These drums are called, "toere." To the untrained ear, the beats may sound the same, but there are distinct beats that have names. Impossible to be written on paper. HAWAIIAN HULA 'AUANA (Modern Dance) A traditional type of dance created during the days of "Territorial Hawaii", perhaps made popular by Hawaii's last king, David La'amea Kalakaua, the only king to travel the world, and is noted for his love for Hawaiian music, and a composer, as well. This particular song is entitled, "Hana," written for the beauty and splendor of a village on the island of Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands.
