Power of Genes

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following:
All physical traits and some behavioral traits are determined by our genetic makeup. Some behavioral traits are determined by environment. For this lesson, you will need: Research materials about genetics and heredity Computer with Internet access Lead a brief discussion with your class about the heredity-versus-environment, or nature-versus-nurture, controversy. Students should understand that all physical traits, except those caused after birth by illness, accident, or surgery, are determined by our genetic makeup, but theorists are still weighing the influence of genes and environment over behavioral traits. With the class, make a list of behavioral traits that students would like to research in order to discover whether they are determined by heredity or environment. The list might include aggressive behavior, addictive behavior, risk taking, shyness, generosity, sensitivity to others, novelty seeking, ambition, and so on.

Accession To The European Union: tomorrow's economy in Central and Eastern Europe
Seminar 0177
London
30 May-1 June 2001
Directed by Dr Andreas Staab
Central and Eastern Europe stand at the crossroads of an exciting, yet challenging new era. With the forthcoming accession to the European Union, the legal and institutional environment, as well as the fundamental nature of economic and business practices are about to change dramatically. Moreover, the emergence of the new economy, with its advances in such fields as e-commerce, the media, telecommunications and environmental regulation poses ever greater risks and opportunities to those aiming to stay on the cutting edge of today's globalised market. This conference is designed for policy makers and practitioners - both from the private and public sector - with a keen interest in the current debate surrounding the EU's enlargement and the impact of the new economy on its future member states. While the conference is targeted at participants from Central and Eastern Europe, participants from other parts of Europe, and indeed even from outside Europe, who like to stay in tune with recent developments in the region are also welcome to attend. The conference spans two and a half working days and consists of keynote presentations, question and answer sessions, as well as study visits to the UK's Department of Trade and Industry, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The conference benefits from the expertise of leading academics from the London School of Economics and from other prestigious UK universities. In addition, high-profile practitioners from political and business sectors, as well as official representatives from the European Commission, will offer practical insider information

Holmes Rolston III: Biographical Sketch Current News Releases News Releases 2001 News Releases 2000 News Releases 1999 ...
Communications
Holmes Rolston III has always loved the mountains on his skyline, from his earliest memories of Jump Mountain behind his birthplace in rural Virginia, to the 14,000 foot Long's Peak on the horizon of his home in Colorado today. High places lift his spirit, he says, they point skyward and beyond. But then he also recalls how the Shenandoah Valley people, loved both nature and the gospel. Rolston grew up as the son of a country preacher, Holmes Rolston II, steeped in the faith of his father and mother (Mary Winifred Long), and, before that, of the first Holmes Rolston, a cowboy who also became a rural Virginia pastor. Rolston recently bought himself a tombstone in the ancestral church cemetery, to be buried beside both father and grandfather. He carved "A philosopher gone wild" on his future headstone; and the next day rose early and climed Jump Mountain, seventy years after his birth, "to prove he wasn't dead yet." Across those decades, Rolston has developed an abiding love for nature. The Appalachian childhood matured into a global search for understanding who we humans are and where we are. That was the start of a journey that would bring together seemingly disparate worlds: science and religion, biology and philosophy, and, perhaps most significantly, ethics and environment. "If you need to start on a journey like mine," he reflects, "the Shenandoah Valley with its Presbyterian heritage, is as much the promised land as any place on Earth."
