The World Water Council president opens the forum. Read more
The third World Water Forum has brought together about 10,000 delegates from 150 countries to debate solutions to the crisis facing more than one billion people without access to clean water. Inevitably, overshadowed by the Iraq crisis, the organisers of this conference say its discussions over the next week will have far more impact on mankind for the 21st Century than current events in the Middle East. Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito opened the week-long forum with a warning that the world faced a water crisis, with shortages, pollution and floods spreading all over the world.

How many times have you been at a loss for words to describe something wonderful? Maybe you said, "It was amazing, but I can't explain it — you should have been there." A talented writer can take us there. But how? Let's take a look at how two writers of note have translated their observations of nature into language that inspires awe in their readers. Annie Dillard is an astute observer of natural events. In her book, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, she describes a memorable encounter with a frog.
...At the end of the island I noticed a small green frog. He was exactly half in and half out of the water, looking like a schematic diagram of an amphibian, and he didn't jump. He didn't jump; I crept closer.... Just as I looked at him, he slowly crumpled and began to sag. The spirit vanished from his eyes as if snuffed. His skin emptied and dropped; his very skull seemed to collapse and settle like a kicked tent. He was shrinking before my eyes like a deflating football. I watched the taut, glistening skin on his shoulders ruck, and rumple, and fall. Soon, part of his skin, formless as a pricked balloon, lay in floating folds like bright scum on top of the water; it was a monstrous and terrifying thing. I gaped bewildered, appalled. An oval shadow hung in the water behind the drained frog; then the shadow glided away. The frog skin bag started to sink.

Inquiry Learning: A Transition Program
The central aims of iLearning courses (Introduction to Inquiry) are to introduce students to inquiry learning and to explicitly develop their capacities to be more effective inquirers and learners. A discussion paper sets out agreed characteristics and criteria to inform the design of iLearning courses. iLearning courses (Introduction to Inquiry) The BIG Questions in Physics PHYS1007 is a science course that is accessible to students from scientific and non-scientific backgrounds. Students are introduced to the big questions about life and the universe, such as the nature of reality and the role of science in exploring it. More details.. Human Biology BIOL1008 is offered jointly by the Schools of Botany and Zoology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Human Biology develops four major themes that are relevant to young people and their concerns: human reproduction, nutrition, sensation and addiction, and the impact of environmental agents on health. A case study teaching approach and resources were developed to explore theory in real contexts and to enhance students' inquiry and information literacy abilities. More details...

Protecting nature religiously
By Alvin Powell
Gazette Staff Bill McKibben studies the environment from a theological perspective: "We have to be able to amuse ourselves without consumption. That's a job for religion." Staff photo by Jon Chase The Earth is getting hotter, there's little debate remaining about that. The world is about a degree warmer than 100 years ago. Sea levels are 4 to 10 inches higher. Ten of the 20th century's warmest years occurred over the past 15, with 1998 the warmest ever. The Environmental Protection Agency even has a global warming Web site. Today's debate isn't over whether the globe will warm, it's over how much and what in God's name we can do about it. At Harvard Divinity School, some people are trying to find out. A number of theologians and environmental activists believe that it is time for mainstream religions to take up environmental causes. Religion is a natural fit, they say, because modern, industrialized culture is what is driving the global warming engine.
