CBC-TV SPORTS CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF CURLING ACTION CBC Sports has exclusive final round coverage of THE 1999 FORD WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS, as the top women's and men's curlers from around the globe gather in Saint John, New Brunswick. The women's final gets underway on Saturday, April 10 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The men will take to the ice on Sunday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. ET. A sold-out Harbour Station and perfect ice conditions means the house will be rocking all weekend long. Mark Lee hosts THE 1999 FORD WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS broadcast for the network. Don Wittman calls the play-by-play with Don Duguid and Sandra Schmirler, bringing their expert analysis from an "insider's" point of view. Duguid is a two-time World Champion; Schmirler, the first-ever women's Olympic Gold Medallist skip, a three-time winner of The Labatt Brier and a three-time World Champion. Winnipeg's Jeff Stoughton, a former World Champion, is one of the favourites to win his second title. His main competition comes from the Danish rink led by Ulrik Scmidt, the German contingent led by skip Andreas Kapp and Norway's Pal Trulsen. The women's favourites include: the Swedes led by three-time world champion Elisabet Gustafson, Denmark's Lene Bidstrup, Norway's Dordi Nordby and the American rink led by Patti Lank. "It's great to be back doing curling," says Joan Mead, executive producer of THE 1999 FORD WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS on CBC-TV Sports. "It's an exciting field that has produced great competition all week long, which should make for great finals on the weekend."

Curling in Britain boosted by gold medal
BISMARCK, N.D. (CP) Like Sandra Schmirler before her, Rhona Martin is an unassuming mom turned national hero in her country for leading her curling team to an Olympic gold medal. Since winning Britain's first winter Olympic gold medal since 1984 in Salt Lake City, some of Martin's experiences have been a carbon copy of Schmirler's following her win for Canada at the 1998 Olympics: post-Olympic exhaustion causing her to run out of gas at the national championships, worrying about being away from her young children too much and feeling amazed at the outpouring of admiration when she returned to her country.

I'm glad you like it, Fritz, but curling strikes me as shuffleboard on ice. On the other hand, unlike figure skating, at least the outcome in curling is objectively determined. TrackBack

    Curling
An introduction to Curling by Esther Hitchcock - U0142072
The Curlers Grace. This is my web page for TMA02. My chosen subject is Curling as it is one of my favourite sports and I feel that it doesn't get enough publicity throughout the media. Curling is a game of skill and traditions. It started back in the 1500's as a pastime during the winter months, played on frozen ponds and lochs. The game, rules and equipment have come a long way since then, and finally in 1998 Curling became an official Olympic sport. There can be no other game, played by people from six to sixty-six and beyond, in which each member of its team of four is equal, with an equal responsibility to play their stone to the best of their ability and an equal duty to sweep another's stone as best they can. According to the 'Encarta Encyclopedia', Curling is "winter sport in which players slide heavy granite stones down a sheet of ice at a circular target area. As the stone slides, teammates can sweep the ice in its path with brooms or brushes. This warms the ice a little, reducing friction and causing the stone to slide farther and straighter." Well sorry, but to an avid curler, like myself, Curling is a lot more than that. Curling is a game of traditions as well as skill. Curlers play to win but never to humble their opponents. A true curler would prefer to lose rather than win unfairly. Curling is one of the few sports in the world that emphasizes "etiquette". No curler ever deliberately breaks a rule of the game or any of its traditions, but if he or she should do so accidentally, they are the first to point out this breach. Players will applaud a well played stone and ignore a badly played stone, no matter which team played it. We all have good days and bad days, but remember:

    Congratulations on Olympic curling Gold

The gold medal performance by the all-Scottish GB women’s curling team has been praised by Deputy Sports Minister Dr Elaine Murray. After Rhona Martin’s rink pulled off a memorable victory over Switzerland - bringing Britain its first gold medal of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the first gold since ice dancers Torvill and Dean in 1984 – Dr Murray said the five-member squad had done themselves, Scotland and Great Britain proud.

Sandra Schmirler Sandra Schmirler, as skip of the Saskatchewan rink, was a three-time winner of the Scott Tournament of Hearts and a three-time World Champion. Schmirler left her foot print on the women's curling scene during the 1997 season. Her Saskatchewan rink became the first women's team to win three world titles. Schmirler became just the third skip - Saskatchewan's Vera Pezer and Manitoba's Connie Laliberte are the others - to win three Canadian titles. Following that success Schmirler, Jan Betker, Joan McCusker and Marcia Gudereit travelled to the Nagano Olympics and won the gold medal. Schmirler's first trip to the Hearts was in the role of vice-skip for Kathy Fahlman in 1987 and the team lost 7-5 to Helene Tousignant of Trois-Riveries in a tiebreaker. The same year the Fahlman team competed unsuccessfully in the Olympic trials to decide a Canadian rep for the Calgary Olympic Games. In 1991, the Schmirler (then Peterson) outfit lost a tiebreaker to Thunder Bay's Heather Houston, one game shy of the semi-finals. But the team returned intact in 1993 at Brandon, posted a 9-2 round-robin record and defeated Maureen Bonar of Brandon 7-6 in a gut-clenching extra-end final that ranks among the most memorable in Hearts history.

A Plea on Behalf of Curling
The great white sport needs a video game of its own
    By - Dave "Fargo" Kosak
Everyone needs a hero. My hero? CURLERS . That's right. For years this sport has been the butt of the Olympics joke, and yet these fine athletes carry on. There are no sponsorships to be had, no big name endorsement deals to be signed, no huge major league contracts available to top draft picks. No, Curlers curl because the game is a beautiful thing. They curl because etiquette demands that after a match you and the opposing team are required to buy one another rounds of drinks. They curl because intense Canadian studies have shown that drinking beer makes rocks go faster. And they're ordinary people! Doctors and lawyers and grocery clerks and those guys who sweep up after you in the movie theatre (you think, "I spilled my goobers, and they're rolling down the floor." He thinks: "Practice.")

CBS turns blind eye on venerable curling
    February 5, 1998 by JO-ANN BARNAS
Free Press Sports Writer Two new Winter Olympic sports represent different generations: Curling has been around for centuries; snowboarding is one of the latest things to come down the mountain. Curling has come a long way in the past 400 years. One of the oldest sports on the planet, it finally has been accepted as an Olympic medal event. Maybe in the next millennium, it will be accepted by the U.S. television networks. Unfortunately for curling enthusiasts in the U.S. not to mention in Michigan, which has four active clubs CBS viewers will hardly know the sport exists. Unlike the two other sports making their Olympic debuts as full-fledged medal events snowboarding and women's hockey curling won't be getting much U.S. airtime. A look at CBS's Olympic broadcast schedule, released last fall, shows that the network has planned just one feature on the sport, the afternoon of Feb. 15. That's it.
