Pablo Picasso "Guernica" "The Cubists threw out the traditional techniques of perspective, rejected foreshortening and the imitation of nature. They represented a new reality in paintings that depict radically fragmented objects in multiple views." (Pioch) So in one blinding sweep, art as we know it changes - instead of making things look like they look, the artists took it to themselves to show things as they are, not how they look. 3rd century AD metaphysicist Wang Pi put it well, "With the idea accomplished, the form can be forgotten" (Wong 73). By completely discarding the traditional forms, the artist was now free to use color, shape, form, line-thickness all towards the purpose of putting through a message. Picasso's "Guernica" is prime example, showing a scene in multiple dimensions of screaming black and gray; a shocking portrayal of the Spanish Civil War. Through "anthropomorphic assumptions" the viewer can make shapes look very human and very real, even if they don't seem to be remotely that real at a glance. Cubism is an advance in many ways, not only did it fully shatter a paradigm of dimensions unimaginable, but it brought art closer to the individual. Not to say the Cubists weren't talented, they certainly were - but instead of having to be Michelangelo, a normal person could sketch together a picture and not feel like a fool because it didn't look

Picasso in life.....
Featuring Picasso Specialist revealing' The Essential Picasso' towards what all lovers of Picasso art should know .
"Yet Cubism and Modern art weren't either scientific or intellectual; they were visual and came from the eye and mind of one of the greatest geniuses in art history. Pablo Picasso, born in Spain, was a child prodigy who was recognized as such by his art-teacher father, who ably led him along. The small Museo de Picasso in Barcelona is devoted primarily to his early works, which include strikingly realistic renderings of casts of ancient sculpture.
"He was a rebel from the start and, as a teenager, began to frequent the Barcelona cafes where intellectuals gathered. He soon went to Paris, the capital of art, and soaked up the works of Manet, Gustave Courbet, and Toulouse-Lautrec, whose sketchy style impressed him greatly. Then it was back to Spain, a return to France, and again back to Spain - all in the years 1899 to 1904.
"Before he struck upon Cubism, Picasso went through a prodigious number of styles - realism, caricature, the Blue Period, and the Rose Period. The Blue Period dates from 1901 to 1904 and is characterized by a predominantly blue palette and subjects focusing on outcasts, beggars, and prostitutes. This was when he also produced his first sculptures. The most poignant work of the style is in Cleveland's Museum of Art, La Vie (1903), which was created in memory of a great childhood friend, the Spanish poet Casagemas, who had committed suicide. The painting started as a self-portrait, but Picasso's features became those of his lost friend. The composition is stilted, the space compressed, the gestures stiff, and the tones predominantly blue. Another outstanding Blue Period work, of 1903, is in the Metropolitan, The Blind Man's Meal. Yet another example, perhaps the most lyrical and mysterious ever, is in the Toledo Museum of Art, the haunting Woman with a Crow (1903).

Georges Braque's "Candlesticks and Playing Cards" Cubism is a more modern art movement in which forms are abstracted by using an analytical approach to the object and painting the basic geometric solid of the subject. Cubism is a backlash to the impressionist period in which there is more of an emphasis of light and color. Cubism itself follows Paul Cezanne statement that "Everything in nature takes its form from the sphere, the cone, and the cylinder." in which these 3 shapes are used to depict the object of the painting. Another way that the cubist expressed their painting was by showing different views of an object put together in a way that you can not actually see in real life. The Cubism period stated in Paris in 1908, reached its peak in 1914, and continued into the 20's. The leaders in the cubist era were Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque . Other painters from this period include Fernand Leger, Francis Picabia, and Roger De La Fresnaye.

C ubism is believed to be the parent of all abstract art forms. The movement began with artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque , after the creation of Picasso's 1906-1907 painting "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (Young Ladies of Avignon).

We're still still alive!
12th February 2002 posted by Mark
It's been a LONG time since the last update, so I figured I should probably update now. Since the last update, the European Gamecube release dates and prices have been announced, which is nice, and it seems the cube will be released here on the 3rd May, for around £150 (€250). Games are expected to sell for £40 each. This is certainly good news as far as the price is concerned, weighing in at a whole £100 cheaper than the Xbox, and £50 cheaper than the recently reduced PS2. However, May is a little disappointing. We wait with baited breath...
If you have any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them, and probably make them a reality, just take a minute to fill in the form on the right or send me an e-mail I want to know how I can make the site better for your browsing pleasure!

An opening comment
Although there is a huge number of sites listed in all search engines as Cubism related, actual offer of resources, information and imagery is very poor. Resources for Cubism lag behind most of the other early 20th century art. On-Line Picasso Project
A university professor from Texas made a major contribution in a joint effort with Picasso's heirs to put online a truly massive wealth of Picasso related information and material. 35 virtual art rooms. Technically interesting and amusing site. Very unusal navigation, do not despair, look 'behind' the painting, it's invisibly compartmentalised so that 'see me not hot spots' take you deeper into the web site. Do explore this profoundly resourceful website. Cubistic dot com A specialist from the Tokyo National Modern Art Museum gives plentiful information and profound insights on Cubistic movement. Visually pleasing and modern site. Offers a fair amount of links to online art resources focusing mainly on modern art. World of Picasso Subsectioned into blue, red, classicist, cubist and guernica phases. Gives overview of each phase and related Picasso's artwork. If you ever get lost, look for 'Oeuvres' or artist's work or 'Tableaux' - table of contents. Website is in French.
