Are Your Crime Prevention Programs Working?
Controlling crime is one of the most urgent challenges facing many public housing agencies (PHAs). To help evaluate their efforts, HUD has developed two practical new management tools: A Guide to Evaluating Crime Control in Public Housing and How to Conduct Victimization Surveys: A Workbook . An effective evaluation can answer questions such as: Are current programs leading to improvements in resident safety? What works best to reduce violence and crime in public housing communities? A Guide to Evaluating Crime Control in Public Housing takes PHA managers and their local partners step-by-step through critical issues in the evaluation process from preparing for an evaluation and collecting information to reporting findings. Preparing for an evaluation. Managers should initiate evaluations during the earliest stages of program implementation, according to the guide, so that any needed program modifications can be made as soon as possible. PHAs with staff know-how but perhaps limited evaluation funds may put together the evaluation team from inhouse resources, while PHAs with greater financial resources might prefer to select a team of researchers from a local university or private firm. Collecting information.

"Statement of Crime Prevention Philosophy" When the London Metropolitan Police Department was created by Act of Parliament in 1829, the primary objective was "prevention of crime." The first nine principles of the British Police were, and still are, "To prevent crime and disorder, as an alternative to their repression by police force and severity of legal punishment." The Illinois State University Police Department is committed to this principle of crime prevention "service" style of policing and order maintenance rather than a legalistic approach when possible.
Rape Prevention
(1 hour) This program deals with the four categories of rape; 1) stranger; 2) acquaintance; 3) date, and; 4) gang, and defines each category. It is intended to project that with proper planning to eliminate dangerous situations, vulnerability can be reduced. The program also emphasizes that learning to recognize danger signs and avoid risk by being alert and thinking ahead can, in many cases, help avoid tragedy.
Common Sense Self-Defense for Women
This program includes psychological preparedness for safety, self-defense techniques, and safety precautions participants can master without special equipment and will present the delivery of counter attack. The overall program is based on the "Conroy Method" and is supplemented by the film, "Common Sense Self Defense."

It has been featured in ATPA's crime prevention literature and in television commercials. A gift from an Insurance Company it sits on a recovered-altered-stolen trailer. It provides an interesting look at what a professional auto thief can do in a relatively short period of time to your car or truck. Crime Prevention and Education starts early. The importance of the next generation can not be over estimated. It takes all of us working together to make our County, State, Country, and World a safer place. For most of us an automobile is the most or second most expensive investment we will make in our lifetime. Doesn't it make sense to protect it from others who want to make it look like our Suburban? Just like Neighborhood Watch, members of an Apartment Watch learn how to make their homes more secure, watch out for each other and their community, and report crime and suspicious activities to the police. Here are some ways to get an Apartment Watch going and growing.
  • Help arrange with local police for apartment security surveys and Operation Identification.
  • Organize citizen patrols to walk around the apartment complex and alert police to crime and suspicious activities. Don't forget to patrol parking lots, stairways, laundry rooms, and playgrounds.
  • Publish a newsletter that gives local crime news, recognizes Apartment Watch captains, and highlights community activities.
  • Organize a reception in the lobby of your building or a cookout on common property so neighbors can get to know one another.
  • Keep pressure on management to make sure it provides adequate security.

Evaluating Community Crime Prevention Programs
As more communities and government agencies become involved in crime prevention there is a need to determine which preventative approaches work best. The first step is to develop valid and reliable easy-to-use methods to monitor and evaluate different kinds of crime prevention activities. Project Description The National Anti-Crime Strategy and National Crime Prevention identified a need for models of evaluation for community based crime prevention projects, programs and strategies initiated by State and Territory Governments. The aim of the research consultancy is to:
  • Develop evaluation models to measure the effectiveness of a range of community based crime prevention projects and strategies Trial the models at various sites in the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria Produce evaluation models and tools
Intended Outcomes This project aims to develop practical, readily applicable and affordable methods of monitoring and evaluating community crime prevention programs, particularly those operated or funded by States and Territories. The products sought are models or guidelines of evaluation methods.

Crime Prevention Services
We offer a wide variety of Crime prevention programs to serve the residents of the Village of Pewaukee. Some of these programs are fairly simple and self explanatory, for instance our "Vacation Check program" means quite simply we will try to keep an eye on your house while you are gone and will notify a keyholder you select if we notice a problem. We will do security surveys of your home or business to suggest better ways of protecting your property. We do child fingerprinting as a public service, distribute Milwaukee Brewer Baseball Club cards and Green Bay Packer Football Club cards as a better way for kids to get to know their police, as well as make public appearances to talk about crime prevention and crime related issues. We patrol our community not only in cars, but periodically on foot patrol as well as on bicycle patrol to bring us closer to the community and to improve interaction. We also offer several programs that we would like to take more time to explain to you and ask for your help in working with us on these programs. These programs are outlined on their own pages. Crime Prevention Programs The best way to keep crime out of our neighbourhoods is to keep ourselves involved in crime prevention. Get to know your business neighbours and discuss an effective crime prevention strategy for your area. If you witness a crime, phone the police. Remain on the line until a police vehicle arrives so you can direct the officers to the exact location and individuals involved in the offence. Don't assume that someone else has called the police... three calls received are better than no calls at all. Join a crime prevention organization such as the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association (ACCPA) , Neighbourhood Watch, Block Watch, Rural Crime Watch, Citizens on Patrol or the Heads Up Fraud Prevention Association. Are You Okay (RUOK) Since May of 1993, the Roseville Police Department has provided the RUOK service to elderly Roseville residents. Each morning the computer generated system contacts 25 Roseville residents to make sure that they are able to answer the phone. If one of the 25 participants in the program does not answer, the system sounds an alert. At that point, either a CSO or a member of the office staff contacts a designated friend or relative of the RUOK participant to check on the RUOK member. If the residents leaves their home for hospital visits or vacation we can take them out of the calling pattern and this also includes not calling on certain days of the week if they wish.
