Crime Prevention Tips
from the National Crime Prevention Council Home safety
  • Make sure you have sturdy, metal or solid wood doors at all entries into your home and that sliding glass and similar doors are properly secured. Install and use well-made deadbolt locks (1.5 inch throw or greater) on all exterior doors. Make sure all exterior doors have wide-angle viewers that can be used by everyone in the house. Install two viewers at different heights if necessary. Trim shrubs and trees that might give criminals a place to hide or climb to second stories. Make sure entry door areas are well lighted so you can tell who’s there. Motion detector lights, floodlights, or similar lighting can help brighten up the property so crooks can’t hide. Make sure everyone – adults, teens, and younger children – knows house rules for answering the telephone and the door.
Child Safety Listen to what children tell you about their lives — friends, school, worries, and fears. Make sure you know your child’s friends and the friends’ parents.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you for inviting me to speak to you this morning. It's nice to see so many familiar faces in the room, and it's a pleasure to meet many of you for the first time. I'm very proud of the federal government's work in supporting crime prevention initiatives across Canada. This meeting, and others like it across the country, are driving the success of the National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention, which Justice Minister Anne McLellan and I launched earlier this year. The strategy has put special emphasis on community-based crime prevention, and as you know, it's focused on children and youth, women and Aboriginal people. It also puts a special emphasis on meetings like this - communities and groups coming together, to learn from each others' experiences.

SOLICITOR GENERAL AWARDS CRIME PREVENTION FUNDING TO OTTAWA-CARLETON
FAMILY SERVICE CENTRE AND JOHN HOWARD SOCIETY OTTAWA, December 13, 1999
- Federal Solicitor General Lawrence MacAulay today announced that the Government of Canada has awarded close to $800,000 to the Family Service Centre and John Howard Society in support of their Children Who Witness Violence initiatives. Under the National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention, this joint project is a co-ordinated effort with the Family Service Centre and the John Howard Society, geared towards curbing violence against women and children in the home. "One of tragic effects of violence against women is that the cycle of abuse is continued by children and young people who are exposed to brutality at home," said Minister MacAulay. "The Federal Government will work with both organizations to develop community-based solutions in response to this serious problem." Children Who Witness Violence focuses on women and their children and the risk factors associated with experiencing and witnessing violations of their personal safety and security in the home. The interventions will include a range of supports for at-risk women and children, and will draw on the efforts of several agencies, to be developed and implemented by the John Howard Society and the Family Service Centre. "Our experience is that women whose partners are abusive and criminal are faced with difficult challenges when raising their children. Appropriate and adequate family management is threatened by the power imbalance in the home, by the presence of psychological and physical violence, and by the instability of the family make-up when one member is involved in the correctional system. The children of these families are also at greater risk for emotional and behavioural problems, including depression and withdrawal, anger and aggression," said Mr. Don Wadel, Executive Director of the John Howard Society of Ottawa-Carleton.

Stovall and her Committee on Crime and Violence Prevention today announced the winners of the Kansas Youth Recognition Award. The award, "Youth Making A Difference" is given each year to elementary school students in Kansas who have been instrumental in preventing crime or violence in their communities. This year's first place winner is Amber Hines, a 6th grade student at Spearville Elementary School in Spearville. Amber was nominated for the award by Dodge City DARE Officer James Lane. Officer Lane nominated Amber for the award for her ability to protect herself and her three younger sisters from a "stranger" who exposed himself while asking for directions. Stovall today announced the winners of the 14 th Annual Wheat State Crime Prevention Awards at a ceremony in Topeka. The awards, which recognize outstanding community crime prevention efforts by Kansas law enforcement officers, are sponsored by the Attorney General's Committee on Crime and Violence Prevention and the Kansas Farm Bureau. Attorney General Stovall presented the first place award in the small department category to Deputy Karl L. Harris with the Meade County Sheriff's Department . A few months earlier, Deputy Harris's stepmother was seriously injured in another car accident, again caused by a drunk driver. Upon his certification as a police officer, Deputy Harris focused on teaching youth in his community the dangers of drinking and driving. General Crime Prevention Tips Three factors must be present for a crime to occur: desire, ability and opportunity. YOU can have a significant impact on the last one, OPPORTUNITY, and can significantly reduce crime by taking simple crime prevention steps.
AT HOME
  • Use a door viewer before opening your door. Always demand identification from strangers (even repair or sales persons). Always lock up your home before leaving.
Don't hide your house keys outdoors anywhere. Use interior and exterior lighting at all times. Have keys ready and in your hand for immediate use when you return home
WALKING
  • Plan your route ahead of time. Never walk alone at night; walk with a friend or your dog. Use well lit streets; not dark alleys or bushy areas. Carry signaling devices like shriek alarms or a whistle. Carry pepper spray (requires a short training course first). BE ALERT ! Look behind you occasionally. NEVER ask for or accept a ride from a stranger. Don't carry large sums of money or wear valuable jewelry.

  • General Crime Prevention Tips Auto Theft Prevention Vacation Precautions Many burglars will spend no more than 60 seconds attempting to break into a home. Make sure every external door has sturdy, wall-installed dead bolt locks. Sliding glass doors offer easy access if not properly secured. You can secure them by installing commercially available locks or putting a broomstick or wooden dowel in the inside track to jam the door. Never hide house keys under the door mat or a rock that is near your door. Most burglars know that trick. Instead give an extra key to a trusted neighbor. When you move to a new house or apartment, have a competent locksmith rekey the locks. All outside door to your home should be metal or solid wood. Install a peephole in all entry doors so you can see who is outside without opening the door. Don't use door chains; they break easily and do not keep intruders out.

Your unit is responsible for both police and customs cooperation, as well as crime prevention…
The idea was to have one unit which would be specifically responsible for the law-enforcement services in the Member States, i.e. the police but also the custom services. In several Member States, customs have a police function as well. My experience up till now, after 18 months, is that it makes a lot of sense to have both police and customs in the same unit. Although there is still a lack of cooperation in many Member States between police and customs, the fact that we have both of them within one unit will make it easier for us to try and improve cooperation between customs and police both at EU and Member State level.

University Police is the first to respond to all medical, fire and criminal emergencies on campus. Members of the academic community and visitors to the campus are encouraged to report crimes or other emergencies to the department's dispatcher by dialing 2222 from any campus phone, or *2222 from on campus pay phones. Criminal Investigation
University Police is responsible for the entire investigative process. This process includes taking the initial crime report and statements, crime scene processing, and the identification and apprehension of suspects, which culminates in the judicial system. University Police's Investigations Unit is staffed by five fulltime detectives, each of whom handles a caseload of crimes against persons such as sexual assaults, batteries, and robberies, along with property crimes such as burglary, auto theft and fraud. Crime Prevention and Community Policing
Under community policing, University Police officers are assigned to patrol designated areas of campus and to develop a relationship with the various groups residing or working in these areas. Our officers are willing to meet with groups to define problems, develop strategies to maintain a safe environment, and conduct special programs.
