Here are general tips for staying safe in a variety of situations, including walking, jogging, shopping, or riding elevators:
Stay alert at all times and tuned in to your surroundings, wherever you are. The wearing of headphones while walking or jogging can reduce your level of alertness. Plan your route in advance, and vary your routes whenever possible. Get to know the neighborhoods and neighbors where you live and work. Find out what stores and restaurants are open late and where police and fire stations are located. When walking or jogging, use busy streets, and avoid shortcuts through deserted parks, vacant lots, and unlit passages. At night, walk or jog only on streets with plenty of light and traffic, and avoid walking alone if possible. Walk on the part of the sidewalk close to the street and away from shrubbery, trees, or doorways. On less busy streets at night, it is sometimes safer to walk in the street rather than on the sidewalk. * Stand tall and walk confidently. Don't make it obvious if you are in unfamiliar territory.

General Tips on Crime Prevention
Prevent Theft
You can make a thief's job significantly more difficult by obeying these guidelines:
  • Lock your bike where there's heavy foot traffic. Always use a kryptonite-type lock. If you set down your purse or backpack, know where it is at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended.

Prevent Burglary
  • Always keep the door to your apartment or dorm room locked. Dead bolts and other such safety lock devices provide added protection. Never let strangers inside your home. Do not leave spare keys under the doormat or in other obvious hiding places. Inscribe items of value with your driver's license number.

Car Safety
  • Park in well-lit areas close to foot traffic. Lock all doors and roll up windows when exiting your car and again after you enter your car. Never leave valuables in plain sight.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer today announced that he will appoint Paul Seave as Special Assistant Attorney General for Crime and Violence Prevention responsible for managing the Crime and Violence Prevention Center in the California Department of Justice.
Seave will join the California Department of Justice next month after he steps down as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California. Seave, an honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, has served as a federal prosecutor for 16 years.
"Paul Seave has been on the front lines prosecuting crime for nearly two decades and now will bring his extensive experience and knowledge to developing effective crime prevention and education strategies for law enforcement and the public in the state," Lockyer said. "With Paul on our team, we have the opportunity to push California further into the forefront in the crime prevention and education arena."
Over the years, the Attorney General's Crime and Violence Prevention Center has been recognized as a valuable resource for state and local agencies working to prevent violence and protect communities from crime. Recent initiatives include an anti-drug abuse campaign focusing on methamphetamine and "Safe from the Start," a series of 10 regional forums in which law enforcement, child protection and other local agencies have been able to exchange best practices and new ideas for protecting children from violence and preventing crime.

Crime Prevention - General - Take Back The Night By Ron Corbin, Phd - Crime Prevention Specialist Released December 31, 2002
How many of your neighbors do you know personally? How many would you recognize by sight? Do you know what vehicles they drive? Or how many kids they have? Chances are that most of us can't answer these questions very well. Sure, you might wave to your neighbors on the way to work, or see them mow the lawn. But would you know if something suspicious was happening around one of your neighbors' houses? Would you know what teenagers belong on your street? The truth is that the better you get to know your neighbors, the safer your neighborhood will become.
In early August each year, a special program called "National Night Out" takes place around the Country. Founded in 1983 and organized by the National Town Watch Association, this event encourages citizens to turn-on outside lights, hold special block parties, organize Neighborhood Watch block groups, and generally encourage support for cooperative police-community crime prevention programs. Each year the program continues to grow with participants numbering approximately 25-30 million.
Depending upon the enthusiasm of the citizens, and the support of your police department, "National Night Out" is usually just one great big party endorsing the effort of fighting crime as a partnership between police and citizens. Besides neighbors getting together for block parties, merchants can show their support by distributing fliers, banners, and posters. Building supply stores can offer special discounts on locks and lighting products, or host seminars on outdoor security lighting. Restaurants can offer late night specials, and grocery stores can feature supplies for block parties.

What is ACCPA?
Alberta's policing agencies have a history of cooperation in fighting crime and its causes. Informally, provincial police forces have always communicated with each other. In 1989, they began meeting in a formal way to discuss mutual crime problems. The group became known as the Alberta Community Policing Advisory Committee. In 1990, the Committee established the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association (ACCPA), to provide a link between police services and the community at large. In 1995, the Association began officially co-sponsoring the Alberta Crime Prevention Week. This event, held in the week including May 15th, is designed to increase community awareness and participation in crime prevention activities.
What crime prevention issues are ACCPA members involved in?
Traditionally, the Association has focused on methods of crime prevention that make criminal acts more difficult to commit. These methods include security, community watch and patrol programs.

CPTED, pronounced SEPted, is not the latest disease under research by the Center for Disease Control. However, it is one of the newest concepts sweeping the Nation in urban planning and community policing. CPTED stands for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Basically it is a philosophy of controlling human behavior, both criminals and their potential crime victims, through physical and psychological design strategies. A more formal definition from the National Crime Prevention Institute for CPTED is, "the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence and fear of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life." Whatever the living environment, from multi-family housing to single-family residences, convenience stores to professional office buildings, certain strategies involving Access Control, Natural Surveillance, and Territoriality can be employed into the design and use of an area in order to reduce criminal activity.

CRIME PREVENTION - GENERAL "Is There Really Such a Thing as 'True' Crime Prevention?"
Ron Corbin, PhD - Crime Prevention Specialist
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department
Most police departments have a unit dedicated to the concept of Crime Prevention. Some departments use sworn officers assigned to these positions, whereas others use civilian specialists. Ask any police officer what Crime Prevention means to them, and you'll probably get an ambiguous response that it has something to do with putting "bad guys into jail". In past times, the emphasis on Crime Prevention was looked upon with little to no interest in accomplishing the mission of a police department. Officers of all ranks considered Crime Prevention as nothing more than organizing Neighborhood Watch groups. "Real Police Work" was done by the officer on the street, and Crime Prevention was a public relations effort at satisfying citizen concerns that didn't call for immediate police service. Today, however, most police departments' upper management and ranking staff members emphasize some level of importance to Crime Prevention as a major component of the "community policing" philosophy. They have come to realize that Crime Prevention is a proactive method in the overall fight against crime, and proactive concepts are recognized as vital to the success of enforcement. If a Crime Prevention project or approach can educate the public (potential crime victims) in a manner that will reduce the rate of victimization, then there will be less calls for police service, and ultimately more effective use-of-manpower, and thus more cost-effective use of citizens' tax dollars.
