AFRICAN INFLUENCED FORERUNNER OF EUROPEAN CIVILIZATIONS By RUNOKO RASHIDI "The first civilization of Europe was established on the island of Crete. It is called the Minoan Culture, after King Minos, an early legendary ruler of the island. The ancestors of the Cretans were natives of Africa, a branch of Western Ethiopians." John G. Jackson M inoan Crete, the forerunner of Greek civilization, is the earliest known European high-culture. Although modest in size (170 miles east to west, thirty-five miles north to sourth), Crete exercised immeasurable influence on the Aegean archipelago, Western Asia and the Greek mainland. Throughout Crete the vestiges of complex palaces, paved highways, aqueducts, terra-pipes for drainage, and irrigation canals provide plentiful proof of Minoan ingenuity in the areas of scientific and technical innovation. The Minoans possessed registed trademarks, uniform weights and measures, calendrical systems based on precise astronomical observations and advanced writing systems. Interestingly enough, there were few fortifications on the island. British archaeologist Arthur Evans (1851-1941), who conducted excavations on the island, was convinced of African migrations to ancient Crete and noted "the multiplicity of these connections with the old indigenous race of the opposite African coast." The late African-American cultural historian John G. Jackson (1907-1993) advocated the view the Minoan civilization was rooted in Africa, and believed that the ancestors of the Minoans "dwelt in the grasslands of North Africa before that area dried up and became a great desert. As the Saharan sands encroached on their homeland, they took to the sea, and in Crete and neighboring islands set up a maritime culture."

http://www.cnn.com/TRAVEL/DESTINATIONS/9803/crete/
From CNN TravelGuide Contributor Steve Nettleton IRAKLION, Greece (CNN) The power of Poseidon still pounds the shores of Crete, a land one 17th century English traveler called "the garden of the universe." Crete is where gods were born, where myths flourished, and where Europe's earliest civilization the Minoans rose from the Mediterranean. According to Greek mythology, Crete was the birthplace of Zeus, chief of the gods. And it was here that a half-man, half-bull the Minotaur devoured young men and women in the Labyrinth, until it was killed by the warrior Theseus. The roots of these legends lie shrouded in historical mystery. But ruins of entire cities leave little doubt that an advanced people once ruled here, centuries before the Greeks and Romans. On the surface, Crete may seem typically Greek. But a deeper dig reveals that Crete's culture is unique. The island became part of Greece in 1913 before that, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks had been its rulers. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, stretching more than 150 miles (242 kilometers) east to west. A short trip inland seems to contradict the fact that it's an island. Mountains reaching as high as 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) partition Crete into distinct regions, each with its own local flavor. Iraklion is Crete's largest city, and feels like it. The congested streets and busy port are a sharp contrast to quiet towns nearby.

Subsequent discoveries, however, have made it clear that Mycenae was not its chief centre in its earlier stages, or, perhaps, at any period; and, accordingly, it is more usual now to adopt a wider geographical title." Women in the Aegean
Minoan Snake Goddess Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe 10. Women in Minoan Culture There is plenty of archaeological evidence to indicate that women occupied an important if not dominant position within the practice of Minoan religion. A principal goddess would appear to have been Potnia ("lady" or "mistress"). The name usually occurs, but not always, with some qualification such as Potnia of Grain, Potnia of Horses, or Potnia of the Labyrinth. Potnia may have been a female form of the male god Potidas or Poteidan, from which was later derived the name Poseidon (a Greek god closely associated with Crete in later times). A female form of Poseidon also occurs in the name Posidaija. Another goddess was apparently named Diktynna and another Britomartis ('Sweet Virgin'). Largely on the basis of what appear to be cult shrines and sanctuaries, the existence of other goddesses have been posited - a goddess of the caves, a tree goddess, a dove goddess, a snake goddess - but it remains unclear whether or not the Minoans worshipped them as individual, specialized divinities or as aspects of a single Great Goddess. The predominance of goddesses (or of the Great Goddess) is attested to by the dominant role played by priestesses in religious ceremonies and the presence of women in ritual contexts. Women far outnumber priests and male attendants, for example, in the paintings on the four sides of the Aghia Triadha sarcophagus.

Greek Culture
Two of the best known cultural icons of Crete are: the 16th century painter, Domenikos Theotokopoulos, best known as "EL GRECO", and the 20th century author, Nikos Kazantzakis. EL GRECO (1541-1614):
Fodele:

The coastal road from Iraklion to Chania is one of the most beautiful in Crete. Here, mountains of gray and purple stone rise from the sea. Of historical interest on this road is the small, green and picturesque town of Fodele.
Fodele is situated approximately 26 km west of Iraklion. It is said that Domenicos Theotocopoulos, El Greco, was born there. Near the fountain of the village there is a Granite stone which bears the engraving of the painter's face. The stone comes from Toledo, Spain and says both in Greek and Latin: "The Faculty of History of the University of Valladolid offers this plaque taken from the rock of Toledo, as a token in memory of the immortal glory of Domenico Theotokopoulos, July 1934".

The Greek island of Crete
In a varied but wonderful climate, the bridge between Europe and Africa, the crossroads of three continents, has kept inside green forests and steep gorges all that nature has to offer. This island, the largest of Greece, is a place with tall mountains, fertile valleys and clean beaches.
Crete offers many surprises in its changing nature...forests of palm trees meet tall mountains, then majestic plateaus and then the sea. But it is a sea you have never seen before. Because this one will make you feel you are a part of its hidden world, the beaches will place you on gentle waves that carry elements of ancient cultures from distant places. And then you can visit the famous gorges and the deep forests with the living wild life.
Crete also carries a long history that goes back to the 7th millennium BC. It is the island that brought us the Minoan civilization with buildings of perfect architecture, and where later came the religious Byzantium years from which many monasteries are still preserved today. Crete also cultivated a rich culture that offered us El Greco and Nikos Kazantzakis, that developed unique customs, dances and music visible even in the present modernized life.
A big part of what makes Crete a very special place is its people. The proud men and women of Crete, the hospitable locals that under romantic nights will welcome you inside a little cafe or an ouzery of a picturesque village and offer you Greek coffee or tsikoudia with meze (raki with spicy snacks).
