http://www.kernscot.org/cdance.html
Scottish Country Dancing meets for weekly classes and periodic workshops with guest teachers. Scottish Country Dancing is reminescent of American country dances such as the Virginia Reel though without the "calling" found in American square dancing. Some dances are fast paced and give a good work out, while others give a balance of graceful and stately movements. The atmosphere is definitely social, however. Scottish Country Dancing is offered at a minimal fee in the Bakersfield area to Kern County Scottish Society members and friends. Currently the class meets one night per week, Monday 7:00pm to 9:00 pm, with a mix of new and experienced dancers. Dress is casual, but don't be surprised to see a kilt or two. If enough new dancers sign up, a "new dancers' class" will form. Scottish Country Dancing is one of the offerings for young people in the SCOTS HERITAGE program. What is SCD or Scottish Country Dance? Scottish Country Dance, a social ballroom dance, should not be confused with Highland Dancing, a competitive dance developed by Highland warriors. It's sometimes elegant; it's often very lively; and it's always lots of fun. Danced to the distinctive Scottish jig, reels or strathspey music, it's also good exercise, whether for your legs or your smile. Most of all, it's social dancing, and it's a great way to meet people. Because it's done in a set, every dancer dances with everyone else in the set.

English Country Dancing Before Playford
Dances from the Lansdowne Manuscript
Christopher Darras
English country dances are mentioned from the near the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I, yet the first printed sets of dances occur almost a century later. The first published dances came out in a series of editions by John Playford, the first of which appeared in 1651 (1650 Old Style). Subsequent editions appeared in 1652, 1657, 1667, continuing through the eighteenth century . Over the course of this period, the dances included in the successive editions show a dramatic change in both form and content. The first edition contains a large variety of dances in a wide range of forms (circles, and longways for 4, 6, 8, or as many as will, as well as squares and other peculiar formations).
Dances added to the later editions do not show the same variety. (For instance, between the fifth and seventh editions, 48 dances were added; of these 47 were longways for as many as will and 1 was a round dance also for as many as will). In view of the changes exhibited in the dances added to The Dancing Master durin ghte latter half of the seventeenth century, doubt exists as to the degree to which the dancing of the sixteenth century may be said to be represented by the dances in the first edition of

What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on "steps" than in, say, ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary). SCD is a very social form of dancing, not only because you get to dance with seven or so people at once instead of just with one partner (smiles and eye contact are almost mandatory, and if you want there is a lot of opportunity for relaxed "flirting") but also because there are workshops, balls and social dances being held in places all over the world. It is nice to be able to travel and join a SCD group for a night nearly everywhere you go. When country dancing came to Scotland in the 18th century, it was at first popular among the townspeople in places like Edinburgh, but spread throughout Scotland (at varying pace) and thrived there even when, during the 19th and early 20th century, more modern dances like the Waltz, One-step etc. became fashionable in other places. Country dancing in Scotland was also influenced by other Scottish dances such as Highland Reels and so acquired a particular "Scottish" flavour.

Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing saw its rebirth in 1923 with two people in a small office in Glasgow. The term "country" can be very mistaken. It started off as social dancing at the royal courts, but due to the nature of Scottish culture, it was also danced in the countryside. It is, in fact, closer to ballroom dancing.
It is quite different from the Highland dancing that is well-known throughout the world. Highland dancing has a martial history, whereas its counterpart is more celebratory. In fact, many of the steps used in Scottish Country Dancing are French in origin and require a partner. It is some of the greatest fun you can have. I have danced to traditional bands as well as to solitary pipers. It is sad that not very many people know about it.

Scottish Country Dancers

The Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge Scottish Country Dancers meet every Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Way Presbyterian (250 S. Foster Drive, across from the State Police Headquarters). The sessions are divided into two parts: 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. is a period for beginners and newcomers to learn the basic steps and simple dances; and 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. is for the more advanced members and the performance group to work on their dance repertoire.
All you need is a pair of soft shoes (or ballet shoes). The dancing is fun, grand exercise, and a part of Scottish culture. The Scottish Country Dancers perform annually at community events, festivals, Highland Games, and, of course, meetings of the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge
Beginners are welcome, and it's free (but donations to cover the church hall are gladley accepted). Walk-ins also accepted.
