http://blenmantech.tusd.k12.az.us/Webb99/Exploration.html
The Age of Exploration Illustrated by Jacob The news of Columbus' voyage to new lands spread quickly throughout Europe, and explorers soon set out for North and South America. Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who sailed along the coast of South America, was the first person to realize that Columbus had not reached Asia, but a new continent instead. A German mapmaker named America after him. The first explorers from Spain explored the southern part of North America and South America looking for gold and riches and claiming land for Spain. One Spanish explorer, Hernando Cortes, conquered the great Aztec civilization, killing many Native American people through war or the spread of diseases that were new to them. Another Spanish explorer, Francisco Coronado, traveled with a large expedition on horseback through the interior of North America looking for gold, which he never found. He did find the Grand Canyon, though. Explorers from France came looking for a passage through North America to Asia, the Northwest Passage, but found instead plentiful fishing and fur trapping. They explored mainly along the northern Atlantic coast of North America and into the interior of the continent along the Mississippi River. The French respected the Native Americans and treated them as business partners, setting up trading posts and exchanging iron tools for the furs the Native Americans brought them. Explorers from England explored mainly along the Atlantic coast of North America. Like the French, they came looking for the Northwest Passage through North America, but they soon became interested in claiming land for England and settling the new land.

The Age of Discovery and Spanish Exploration

The discovery of the New World and the Americas is a topic that has elicited much discussion and debate for many years. Legends and folklore tales tell of adventuring Scandinavians that visited Newfoundland and New England. The pre-Incan Lambayeque culture of Peru believed that their supreme deity was brought to coastal Peru on the backs of turtles and portrayed through artistic depiction in a weaving the story of their deity and his constant turtle attendants (see illustration i). Present day history books tell the story differently. In 1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian from Genoa, with Spanish funds provided by its King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, set sail from Portugal and discovered America without touching the mainland, rather Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. For the next ninety-six years Spain would rule the high seas and lay claim to more lands than any other Old World country. In rapid succession, first Hernan Cortes conquered Mexico and the Aztec in 1519-1520. Subsequently Pizarro conquered Peru and the entire Incan empire in 1533 with an army of only 500 men. The treasures of these lands and cultures - gold, silver, jade - were sent to Spain. The discovery rights to the Seven Cities of Gold, rumored to exist in the north and initially thought to contain the next treasure trove, became highly sought after by high-ranking officers and explorers - Cortes, Alvarado, Coronado, De Soto, et. al., to name a few. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's expedition into the American Southwest in 1540-1542 discovered only adobe pueblos previous cast and reported as golden in the rich sunlight of the desert southwest.

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was born in 1510 in Salamanca, Spain. He belonged in a very wealthy family. Coronado married Dona Beatriz de Estrada, who belongs to one of the most wealthiest and powerful families in Mexico. In 1538, Coronado became the governor of New Galicia, an area in the northwest part of Mexico. Fray Marcos de Niza went on a journey in 1539. He came back saying that he had seen the Seven Cities of Gold. Fray Marcos de Niza told many stories of his journey. In his stories, Marcos explained about the Indians and the cities full of riches. Marcos told Coronado that Cibola was a city full of gold, but when Coronado arrived in Cibola, he found that Marcos’s stories were nothing but exaggerations. They ate most of their food on the way to Cibola, so they did not have much left. On his journey he met a tribal chief, who the Spaniards named Bigotes (meaning whiskers). Bigotes offered the Spaniards a captive who knew the area in the east very well. The Spaniards named him El Turco (The Turk). El Turco told great stories of Quivira the city with many riches. The Spaniards were amazed by his stories.

    THE SPANISH EXPLORATION WESTWARD
D uring the late medieval period, the Mediterranean Sea was dominated by several powers: Venice and Genoa in Italy, the Islamic powers of Turkey and Egypt and to a lesser degree by such powers as the Knights of Rhodes. Trade in materials, spices, foods, slaves, etc. was commonplace. Endemic too were piracy and warfare between theso-called Christian powers and those of Islam. On the Islamic side too we ought to note that overland caravans from the far East travelled regularly across central Asia into the Levant, bringing such rarities as silk and teas and spices, then sold to Venetians for export to Europe at profit.
The maritime powers on the Atlantic were all too aware of the dominant position thatthe Italian middlemen played in selling such goods to Latin Christendom. In an attemptto find a new route to Asia and its material wealth, the sturdy Portuguese had for over half a century sailed down the west coast of Africa, discovering in the process gold, pepper, ivory and other natural resources as well as a staggering array of different peoples, animals and plants. Thanks to Bartholomeu Diaz and Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese finally rounded the treacherous waters of the Cape of Good Hope and sailed into the Indian Ocean, ultimately reaching India, China and Japan. Since the Portuguese colonized, fortified, mapped and organized their profitable trade routes in that direction, the Spanish and other Atlantic Ocean European powers had little choice but to look westward. Already by 1500, some Portuguese had landed in what we now call Brazil for stopovers on their long African voyages.

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Spanish Exploration By the early 1500s, Spain was well entrenched in the New World. The Spanish colonial empire stretched from South America to the northern Mexican frontier. The unexplored wilderness north of Mexico still remained a mystery. Then, in 1536, three Spaniards and a Moroccan slave stumbled out of the Soronan desert and into the surprised embrace of their fellow countrymen. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.
Eight years earlier, the quartet had been members of large expedition seeking gold in Florida. A disastrous shipwreck and subsequent mishaps resulted in the deaths of all but four of the conquistadors. After years of captivity and deprivation, the survivors slowly made their way across the American Southwest, perhaps touching parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Nearing their end, they crossed the Rio Grande River (near today's El Paso) into Mexico. Among the fantastic stories they told, one related to the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. Although the foursome never saw the Seven Cities themselves, the mere possibility of untold riches was enough to ignite a headlong expansion into the North American continent.

A Cuarto Centennial History of New Mexico
by Robert J. Torrez Chapter One: Early Spanish Exploration of the Southwest
Less than two generations after Christopher Columbus set foot on the shores of an obscure Caribbean island on October 12, 1492, and claimed this New World for the Spanish kingdoms of Leon and Castille, Spanish conquistadores such as Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro had conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico and the Incas of Peru. Subsequent explorers remained on the alert for other lands which might prove as wealthy as ones these men had conquered. It was this search for a "new" Mexico which ultimately led to the expedition which first brought the Spanish to New Mexico in 1540. In 1536, the ragged survivors finally emerged from the wilderness at Culiacan, on the west coast of Mexico. Cabeza de Vaca's report to the Spanish Viceroy, Antonio de Mendoza, included a brief mention of stories they had heard which told of large cities in the interior of the continent where valuable minerals were traded. These sparse but tantalizing bits of information sparked a renewed interest in the Spanish quest to find the "new" Mexico which had so far eluded them. In 1539, Mendoza authorized Marcos de Niza, a Franciscan priest who had accompanied Pizarro to Peru, to conduct a preliminary exploration to determine the truth of these reports. Estévan went along as the expedition's guide.
