Math for reporters and copy editors By Wanda Cash

The Baytown (Texas) Sun

Presented at the 2001 ASNE High School Journalism Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.
Reporters generally know how to write. Copy editors generally know grammar, spelling and punctuation. But people in neither group got their necessarily jobs because they were good at math. Here is a primer for those editors and reporters facing deadline math.
  • To figure a percent, divide the small number by the larger and multiply by 100. For instance:

When you send a review, cite the version number at the top. At this point, continuing changes to the ms aren't large but they are frequent, and I need to know what you're looking at. Try to batch up your error reports, especially the typos. One email with a lot of corrections in it is better than a dozen single- character fixes. Please cite chapters, sections, and examples by name rather than number. The chapter numbering has changed often enough during the writing that references by number sometimes confuse me. Please don't send just diffs against the HTML. They don't map well back to the XML in my masters, and they're hartd to read. A copy of the text with the changed location called out is more useful. The following are not errors.
  • (Yes, I'm an American. So what? I grew up in Europe. I eat with my fork in my left hand, bar my 7s, like metric measures, and wince at mm/dd/yy dates too. There are some things my country just gets persistently wrong, alas.) Doug McIlroy says his biggest beef with this book is that the vocabulary is excessively geeky and dense in spots. He's got a point. This sort of thing is hard for an author to get perspective on, so please keep an eye out for places where language can be simplified and jargon trimmed out.
