Angels and Copy Editors Defend Us!
by Ann Fothergill-Brown
Of the several definitions given for discretion in Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 10th edition , perhaps the most telling from an editorial perspective is: "cautious reserve in speech." In copy editing, exercise of editorial discretion — the "ability to make responsible decisions" (another of the definitions) — depends greatly on using a cautious reserve in amending what a good author has placed on the page. Tinkering with the author's words simply because "I would not write them that way" is not discretion, but interference. Preserving the author's authentic voice is as important as enhancing its presentation so as to maintain the authority of the words. Of what, then, does the enhancing consist? And how does editorial discretion fit in? Stated simply, copy editing looks to correct errors and "infelicities" in three areas: punctuation grammar , and style . Nothing undermines an author's authority so fast as poor language mechanics, misspellings, shoddy grammar, and a badly constructed text.
Punctuation
Discretion is rarely an issue in punctuation decisions. Convention dictates how punctuation is to be used, and punctuation convention is remarkably consistent in the English language. Everyone knows, for example, that a period has just two functions: marking abbreviations and ending declarative sentences. If, as in modern usage, some abbreviations omit the period, the style guide for the particular publication will specify the rule to be followed.

A Whole New World Wide Web
Southern California ACES meeting
March 4, 2000, at the Press-Telegram
The panelists (from left): Don Chareunsy, copy editor at hollywood.com; Elaine Pan Zingrabe, deputy editor of latimes.com; and Larry Pryor, director of the Annenberg Online Program at USC.
A s the "dot-com" frontier expands, an increasing number of experienced print copy editors are heeding the call to cyberspace, and many students are bypassing low-paying newspaper jobs altogether to join the online gold rush.
About 40 copy and news editors heard from the experts about opportunities and blurred lines in this largely undefined industry during a panel discussion March 4 sponsored by the Southern California chapter of ACES and held at the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
The program, "Copy Editors and New Media: A Whole New World Wide Web," was moderated by Los Angeles Times copy editor and ACES executive committee member Ron Smith. After the panel session, ACES members discussed plans for the 2001 conference, which will be held in Long Beach. P anel member Larry Pryor, director of the Annenberg Online Program at the University of Southern California, said greater demand for online news means greater demand for workers with copy editing and headline writing skills.

COPY EDITORS: WHO THEY ARE AND WHY YOU NEED ONE
By Art Detman, Jr. (from "Signature" Vol. 7, No. 2, Spring/Summer 1992) Few things are more satisfying than opening, for the very first time, your very own self-published book. In beautiful black ink on creamy white pages are your wise thoughts, your clever phrases, your contributions to society, your. . . YIPES, a typo! Right there, like a giant spider on the kitchen curtain, is a typographical error for all the world to see. Unfortunately, unlike a spider, it won’t go away. Indeed, soon you find it has multiplied. There’s a misspelling on one page, incorrect punctuation on another, and a missing word elsewhere, all mute testimony to the absence of a copy editor. Take, for example, a self-published book describing how to save money when buying a car. Here is the first sentence of the book’s second paragraph: "American’s have never been taught how to buy, sell, or trade a car." That errant apostrophe is the first of countless errors throughout the book, compounded by the overuse of exclamation points (sometimes three in a row), overuse of boldface, overuse of... well, you get the idea. However valuable this book’s information may be, its credibility is compromised by the semi-literacy of the text. Clearly, the authors are not trained writers. But even if you are an experienced writer, you should not try to copy edit or proofread your own book. First, you bring pre-existing knowledge to the work; phrases and concepts that you take for granted may be unknown to your readers. Second, you can’t accurately proofread your copy because your eyes sees what your mind expects it to see; that’s why a magician can make a card disappear even as you stare at it.

The Perl Review: The roles of editors
The editorial process involves many steps and many different people who prepare an article for publication. The process is a pipeline along which editors assert different levels of quality control. This list is roughly in order of a typical editorial pipeline.
    Acquisition Editors
Acquisition editors solicit articles from authors and help them develop the topic. Expectations of acquisition editors
    • identify interesting topics
    • solicit articles from potential authors
    • guide authors in the submission process
    • help authors identify the audience
    • help authors develop the abstract
    • pass article on to an article editor

Technical Editors Volunteer to be a technical editor (editors@theperlreview.com)
Regular technical editors get the article first and act as a filter. Before any other editing is done, the technical editors judge the ideas and concepts of the article. They may correct mistakes, point out additional technical points, illuminate sublties, and so on. They give the article editors their opinion on the merit of the topic and general worthiness of publication. Subject matter experts may serve as technical editors for specific articles.
