Why Copy Editors Are Necessary: A Small Treatise on the Publishing World
I'd like to take a moment to explain just what copy editors in the fiction field do, with the perspective of almost 20 years in the field, having been a developmental editor, acquiring editor, copy editor, and managing (production) editor over time. (An even better question is, who is left to develop the manuscript to its full potential in the first place? Nowadays? ... often a freelance developmental editor. (NB: Copy editors in other fields, such as newspapers and magazines, traditionally work more directly with the copy that has been fully developed and checked by the editor/writer. Part of this accounts for, I believe, the dim view some people have taken of copy editors: they believe all that they do is check for grammar and impose spelling and rules upon prose ... a pleasant but somewhat anal-retentive task. Book copy editors do a far wider job in 99% of the cases, due to the reasons noted above.) (Q: Does anal retentive have a hyphen? A: If you know the answer, then you may be a good copy editor. During a week-long seminar for copy editors at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies last March, Cynthia L. Decker, 37, excused herself to take a call from her boss at The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch. Decker, a copy-desk veteran, came back ecstatic with news of her promotion to assistant features editor. The announcement momentarily cheered colleagues who were debating the advantages and disadvantages of their often-underrated careers. Usually the last journalists to handle stories, copy editors serve as "fresh eyes," check facts, make corrections, enforce style, write headlines, set tonevital skills in a time of sagging newspaper credibility. Yet many copy editors sense that managers overlook their contributions when promotions open up. And that's just one of their frustrations. After years of adapting to pagination and surviving staff restructuring, downsizing, redesigns and tacked-on new-media responsibilities, many copy editors in St. Petersburg concluded that the critical copy-editing function demands reappraisal by, and renewed appreciation from, editors and publishers alike.

    HERO WORSHIP
Last summer, Presstime asked the nation's editors to write letters of appreciation to their favorite copy editors and fax copies to the magazines. Here is a selection of testimonies to whom several respondents called their "unsung heroes." Dear Mark Murphy, We know that only you know how much you really catch, but we still want to say thanks for all your great work as slot editor of our night local copy desk. Fact is, you're a pretty quiet guy, so most of your colleagues probably don't know about the great job you do. But others here know you've probably saved each and everyone's neck many times. And some of us even recognize that you do this under deadline - after deadline - after deadline - after deadline - after deadline. You have to make your save and move on to the next task. That's what happens when you've got six open pages in five editions daily. It's mind-boggling to think about. Six pages, broadsheet. Usually open. Local copy. Five editions. That's a heck of a lot of type, and you read most of it. You correct our misspellings, complete our incomplete sentences, fix our awkward idioms and rewrite our run-on sentences. You always work to improve our headlines and readins, and you often succeed. You can fill in for your supervisors and run the desk in a pinch. You page designs are clean, and your news judgment is sound. All of this, and you can paginate too. Because of you, our readers get a better product.

Significant Points
  • Competition is expected to be less for lower paying, entry-level jobs at small daily and weekly newspapers, trade publications, and radio and television broadcasting stations in small markets. Persons who fail to gain better paying jobs or earn enough as independent writers usually are able to transfer readily to communications-related jobs in other occupations.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers and editors generally fall into one of three categories. Writers and authors develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, online publications, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, motion pictures, and advertisements. Technical writers develop scientific or technical materials, such as scientific and medical reports, equipment manuals, appendices, or operating and maintenance instructions. They also may assist in layout work.

HOME WHAT'S NEW!! RECOMMENDATIONS Recommended Books ... HELP SUPPORT THIS SITE Welcome to Internet Homeworking Directory. PROOFREADING Each year, in excess of 100,000 books and journals are published in the U.K. Each of these will have started out as an author's manuscript complete with errors, inconsistencies and spelling mistakes which need to be removed. This takes the form of two processes, copy-editing and proofreading, both of which are very often carried out by freelance copy-editors and proofreaders from home. This is more cost effective for the publishers, given that the volume of work can be unevenly spread throughout the year, and will require specialists from differing fields. Like any other freelance work, check out any company if you are taking on a large quantity of work, as freelancers and other contractors are always the last to be paid in times of economic difficulty for a company, or for less scrupulous companies. A particularly high risk sector is vanity publishing (eg former company Minerva Press Ltd) Whilst no formal qualifications or previous experience are necessarily required, a good command of English, a systematic approach and an eye for detail are obviously necessary.

This is the newsroom group the 1988 report labeled ''The Disillusioned Gatekeepers,'' and not much has changed. Although copy editors are remarkably similar to the rest of the newsroom in their personal traits, their attitudes stand out in contrast. They are more pessimistic about their futures and the futures of their papers, but they are more ambitious as well - which could help explain the frustration evident in some of their responses.  Copy editors occupy about 18 percent of the newsroom workforce, down from the 19 percent recorded in the 1988 survey.  Personal Differences Copy editors are no different from the rest of the newsroom in nearly all the personal measurements taken in the survey. Their age distribution, racial distribution, ratio of men to women, and marital statuses mirror the rest of the workforce. Their political leanings and religious affiliations match the newsroom, as do the influences on their decisions to go into journalism. Despite their different attitudes about work (described below), copy editors seem virtually as satisfied with their personal lives (76 percent) as their coworkers are (81 percent).  And as noted elsewhere in this report, gay journalists are more likely to be copy editors: Whereas copy editors make up 18 percent of the overall workforce, they compose 28 percent of the gay workforce.

Diversity In search of ... minority copy editors Newspaper groups have started programs to increase the ranks of minorities on their copy desks By Jim Gold When Ron Smith challenges stories crossing the Los Angeles Times’ national desk, he draws on reader advocacy skills learned in a Times Mirror program that encourages diversity among copy editors. The 1995 METPRO/Editing graduate said the program taught him to raise questions readers would ask, spot inconsistencies and go beyond spell check to look at story context and content. “Most important, we learned to be diplomatic and professional and to raise questions without offending the fragile egos of reporters and editors,” Smith said. The 10-year-old METPRO/Editing program is just one example of newspapers trying to recruit and retain copy editors of color. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group recently launched a joint copy editor training program. Hearst Newspapers has a 1-year-old program that includes a copy editor as well as two reporters and a photographer. “The industry needs to diversify its copy editing ranks,” Smith said, echoing the ASNE goal that newsrooms reflect the general population they serve by 2025 or earlier.
