High-Yield Conservation: The Only Global Sustainability for the 21st Century Alex A. Avery Humanity faces a daunting task as we enter the 21st century: Feeding a larger, more affluent world a better diet while at the same time conserving wildlife habitat, biodiversity and ecological integrity. The world is in the midst of the largest surge in global population in human history. Population growth rates peaked in 1996; however, the inherent momentum of population growth will drive the global population to 8-9 billion people before it stabilizes. This represents a 50 percent increase over the current population of 6 billion. Based on recent trends in fertility rate, current predictions call for a peak world population of 8.5 billion reached about the year 2040.[1] While population growth has been the focus of world attention over the past 30 years, it alone will not be the greatest challenge. Affluence will also increase global demand for farm resources. As living standards rise, a shift occurs from subsistence diets comprised mainly of grains, roots/tubers, and low animal protein consumption, to high-quality diets comprised mainly of varied grains, meats, dairy products, eggs, and consumption of diverse fruits and vegetables. The critical difference between the two is that it takes many more farm resources to produce a single calorie of meat or dairy products compared to cereal grains or tuber crops. Thus, the shift to a more affluent diet, higher in proportionate levels of animal protein, increases the demands on farm resources.

Intentional Communities, Sustainability and Environmental Conservation
by Betty Branch A lthough "Sustainability" is a concept much prized by HopeDance aficionados, my 1992 dictionary lists no such word and my Spellcheck rejects it! Only four years or so ago did I first hear about "sustainability" from the lips of Architect Professor Polly Cooper, no less. Only then did I recognize the essential relationship between environmental conservation and intentional communities. Yet those have been two of my major interests for the past 30 years! Intentional communities enable many collaborative activities that foster environmental conservation. Unfortunately not all communities practice these. For example, friends sometimes decide to rent or buy units in the same condo or apartment house, yet make no attempt to carpool, etc. OPTIMAL sustainability exists only within such communities when they DO practice Environmental conservation. Neighbors can enjoy the kinds of advantages that prevailed in California through the late 1950's in the early suburbs (post WW2) as well as the long established rural areas with their barn-raisings, quilting bees and growers' co-operatives. These communities enabled pooled skills/talents, increased buying/selling power, exchange of services (including informal, as needed, childcare/elder care) and much much more. "Neighborliness" was taken for granted in those days.

Kit Richards lectures at the School of Forestry, refuting the preservationist ethics of NFA, the NZ Greens, and Forest and Bird. He demonstrates that ecological, sustainable forest management, as developed by Timberlands West Coast delivered not only what New Zealand needs, also shows the way for the World to meet Agenda 21 and Rio agreements. The preservationist model is exposed as non- functional and unrealistic in the New Zealand context, inevitably resulting impoverished biodiversity and impoverished human society.

Introduction.
Hello everyone, and welcome to this special session on the indigenous forestry.
I'm Nora Devoe, Senior lecturer in indigenous forestry at the School of Forestry, and I will be moderating this final session, in our special series on management of indigenous forests.
We heard first on conservation biology from Dr David Norton, who talked to us about how wildlife and sustainable management can be compatible, and then we heard from Eugenie Sage, from Forest and Bird, who talked to us about points where management and conservation are

The aims of the World Summit on Sustainable Development are laudable. Cleaner air and water, better stewardship of global resources, the eradication of poverty and disease no one can argue with such objectives. The question is how to get there from here.
Let me offer a prescription for sustainable development that begins with a simple and powerful idea - an idea which, unfortunately, will often be at odds with what delegates, journalists and other observers hear in Johannesburg. The idea is that economic growth leads to levels of wealth and income that, in turn, inevitably produce societies that are cleaner, healthier and more stable and that use global resources more efficiently.

UBC Announces Largest Energy Retrofit In Canadian University History
Over $1 million in annual electricity costs to be saved by 2005 The Power Smart Certification distinction is reserved for a select group of organizations who are in the upper echelons of energy efficiency leadership and who have a history of continuous improvement in internal energy efficiency. This includes an aggressive Power Smart action plan with a commitment to adopt best management standards to design, build, commission and retrofit facilities to the highest levels of energy efficiency. The organization must also be in the top 25 per cent of their industry with a target to be in the top 10 per cent with regard to overall energy efficiency. Power Smart Certified customers will be granted access to incentive funding for incremental high profile energy management projects and for demonstration technology opportunities. Power Smart is a cost-effective initiative that assists customers in conserving electricity, thereby saving them money and reducing further impacts on the environment. Electricity conservation helps BC Hydro meet growing customer demands by making more efficient use of the electricity that is currently generated, and by helping delay the need for new, large-scale generation projects. Over the next 10 years, it is expected that Power Smart will save 3500 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity or enough energy to power 350,000 homes each year. To date, Power Smart has saved customers in British Columbia over one billion dollars.

The first part of the course examines the theoretical and applied concepts of sustainability, natural and social ecology, ecosystems management, ecological engineering, and regenerative studies. In the second half, the course will cover the tools and practices of sustainability using new ecotechnologies and social science methods. Applications of solar energy, agroecology, ecological aquaculture, biological wastewater treatment, restoration ecology, and community-based social rehabilitation tools for a sustainable society will be emphasized. Teaching Background
What is Wildlife Management?
Managing wildlife encompasses a large number of activities, such as running parks and reserves, rehabilitating and otherwise manipulating habitats used by wildlife, control of native or exotic pests, protection of human life or property, and regulation of harvests of wildlife. The Key Centre's activities may touch on all of these and more, but will focus particularly on study of management systems involving harvest for subsistence or commerce.
Conservation and Sustainability of Wildlife Use Use of wild species of plants and animals is an integral part of the life of every human community. The formal economies of northern Australia are fundamentally dependent on such activities. Obvious examples include the consumptive use of grasses (the pastoral industry) and the non-consumptive exploitation of plants and animals for the entertainment and education of visitors (the tourism industry). Other commercially important activities require comprehensive displacement of wild species from the places they previously occupied and substitution of exotic species for which there is a market demand (the horticultural and cropping industries). Whilst intensive use of land and its plants and animals currently dominates a relatively small part of the north Australian landscape, evidence is accumulating rapidly that the more extensive uses have also led directly or indirectly, to many adverse changes in wildlife populations. Declines in the range and abundance of granivorous birds and small mammals are among the more obvious.

http://www.northwestwatch.org/topics/cat1_sustain.html
Overview Northwest Environment Watch monitors the Pacific Northwest's progress toward sustainability and identifies the most important reforms for the region to adopt. The Northwest includes British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and adjoining parts of Alaska, Montana, and California. The Northwest is home to 16 million people, along with diminished but still impressive numbers of salmon, eagles, grizzly bears, killer whales, and wolves. It boasts an economy that generates more than $450 billion worth of goods and services each year, enough to make northwesterners some of the richest people ever. The Northwest has traditions of innovation in the public and private sectors; a well-educated populace; and, above all, a commitment to conservation. Indeed, the environment is, in many ways, the Northwest's defining issue. This biological region retains a larger share of its ecosystems intact than perhaps any other part of the industrial world. It has helped set the conservation agenda for the continentwith the first bottle bills and urban growth management laws in the 1970s; trend-setting energy conservation and curbside recycling efforts in the 1980s; old-growth forest protection in the 1990s; and now, endangered species listings affecting its major cities.
