41. Conservation V. Sustainability
native animal numbers as well) However the main conflict with conservation and sustainabilityis in the productivity area of a sustainable farming enterprise.
http://landholders.tripod.com/id104.htm
var TlxPgNm='id104'; Landholders for the Environment home Landholders for the Environment Conservation v. Sustainability The words "conservation" and "sustainability" are often used almost as if they were interchangable in meaning. There is a general impression in the community that a person who aims to farm land sustainably will need to also need to be a conservationist and, vice versa. The view is, that it is necessary to conserve native plants and animals everywhere in the places that they presently exist if we want to be sustainable.
Coupled with this perception is the assumption that farmers should pay all the costs associated with being sustainable since it is his future that he is sustaining and that naturally he needs to conserve native flora and fauna as a part of that process.
The two ideas of "conservation" and "sustainability" are closely related so it is natural that are sometimes confused in the minds of people who have no direct involvement in either of them. The aim of this article is to clarify the confusion.
Sustainability
The word sustainability is usually used to mean sustainable production of agricultural products, that is farming the land in such a way that it stays healthy and productive and will be in as good or better shape in a hundred years time as it is now. Landholders will use any mix of species (native or exotic) to achieve this ends. They generally have few ideals but many practicalities to shape their choice of species

Worldwide Markets contact us country sites ... Positions Energy Conservation Energy Conservation as an Environmental Issue
Energy conservation has been an environmental and geopolitical issue as far back as the warnings of the Club of Rome in the late 1960s and the oil price shocks in the '70s. The issue has taken on an added dimension in the '90s with the public concern about carbon dioxide contributing to an enhanced greenhouse effect. The Club of Rome warnings proved to be overly pessimistic when more resources were discovered and efficiency of energy use improved. The oil price shocks became a passing problem when, for various reasons, the cartels broke down. The concern about greenhouse effect may ultimately decline as well, but no early abatement of the issue is predicted or expected.
The sustainable development concept requires that energy conservation be part of an overall program which meets "the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Energy consumption is a core issue in the debates regarding equitable distribution of wealth and the ability of the world to sustain present and future population levels. Alcoa's Environmental Policy and Implementation Plan notes that "Operating Management will utilize quality tools, waste minimization techniques and energy conservation practices to reduce resource utilization, waste and environmental impacts."
Energy to Produce Aluminum
Significant progress has been made in reducing the electrical energy required to produce aluminum. In 1900, producers used an average of about 28,000 kwh to produce one metric ton of primary aluminum; by 1950, the energy output had fallen to 20,000 kwh and today's state-of-the-art smelter uses less than 13,000 kwh per metric ton. The level of consumption is still large compared to the amount used for competing materials. The generating mode has a major influence on the total thermal energy required and the environmental emissions oproduced. Generation of hydropower stations is highly efficient while the energy efficiency of fossil fuel-fired power stations is much lower.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSEWORK
(overview of the curriculum) (IGERT courses) Overview of the curriculum. To work effectively on interdisciplinary research projects, IGERT fellows must have an understanding of and appreciation for the variety of disciplines represented in this educational program. Thus, we have designed a multidisciplinary curriculum that includes two new interdisciplinary courses in Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainability, Spanish training, and the choice of a variety of courses within four core areas: Social Sciences and Ethics,
Economics,
Biophysical Sciences,
and Agriculture/Forestry. These four categories were chosen to give students the breadth of knowledge that will be required in their interdisciplinary research programs. Students must have a basic understanding of the underlying principles and issues within each of these major fields in order to work effectively at addressing the complex problems at the interface of conservation biology, production agriculture/forestry, and sustainability.

However, sustainable programs must be economically feasible, while conservation programs have no such limitation thanks to public cost-sharing. Sustainable agriculture programs have focused on reduced use of purchased inputs such as fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Conservation programs focus on the use and quality of natural resources, particularly land and water. The article looks at how sustainability and conservation differ while sharing the goal of protecting against environmental degradation.

Prawn Fishery - Pacific Region
COMMERCIAL PRAWN TRAP FISHERY CONSERVATION, SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPROVED MANAGEMENT MEASURES SINCE 1995 The recent history of the management of the commercial prawn fishery is one of incremental steps to improve conservation of the resource and sustainability of the associated commercial, recreational and First Nations' fisheries. Although these changes are individually more or less important, collectively they represent a significant and sustained effort to improve management and stock assessment. 1. PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE This type of decision rule may close the commercial fishing in an area earlier than necessary. For example, if the prawns have recently entered a molting stage in the area, then the abundance may appear to be reduced as the prawns hide out waiting for their exoskeletons to regain protective strength. Biological sampling at this time may suggest reduced abundance where no such reduction exists, and this will lead to a closure decision. Prawn management and stock assessment personnel are prepared to accept criticism for early closures, on the basis that inadequate data is an insufficient reason for continuation of the fishing and that where ambiguity exists, decisions must be made in favour of the resource.

Back to Technical Advice Home Technical Advice Lime Mortars Conservation and Sustainability Investigation into lime mortars is not a new area of research for BRE. For the past 75 years they have provided scientific approaches and guidance for the many types of lime based mortars and associated products. A review of lime mortars and their uses in the I 920s was produced by A.D Cowper in 1927 (reprinted I 998). This has remained a valuable source of information. However; over the last nine years, a steady increase in the demand for research and development of lime mortars has been noted. Concern about re-cycling and the use of other adverse materials has seen the resurgence of lime mortar as a material of choice for conservation projects and increasingly for newbuild. Despite a long history of research, selecting an appropriate mortar is still not an easy task as much of the traditional knowledge has been lost in the post war years. The use and understanding of lime mortars in historic building conservation and new-build has become to some extent a grey area, subject to a wide range of interpretations, even in conservation circles. BRE's Centre for Heritage Stone and Masonry Structures sets out to explore and determine the theoretical and practical nature of lime mortars. The Centre has identified that the interest in lime based construction products has increased greatly over recent years both for the conservation of heritage structures and for the sustainable construction of new buildings. Not only does the building conservation industry need access to high quality lime mortars to maintain the quality of our historic buildings but also today's construction industry is currently examining possibilities of utilising newfound research.

Rainforest Alliance certified shade coffee farms, like this one in Guatemala, promote biodiversity of tree and wildlife species and are considered the next best thing to natural forest habitat.
The mission of the sustainable agriculture program is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that live within them by developing and implementing best management practices and standards for commodity crops, providing incentives to farmers to meet those standards, and encouraging the marketing industries and consumers to support farmers who are making on-farm improvements toward sustainability. Farmers, companies, cooperatives, and landowners that participate in our programs meet comprehensive, rigorous standards for protecting biodiversity conservation and sustainability by integrating productive agriculture, conservation, workers, and local communities. By verifying that certified farms are employing best management practices, the Rainforest Alliance is helping reduce the environmental impacts and increase the social benefits of tropical agriculture. Through rapid growth in population and increasing demand for resources, the world is in danger of losing much of its genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. To address this challenge and to increase understanding of the strong relationships between the health of the biosphere and the welfare of human communities, the Foundation has established the Conservation and Sustainable Development area. This area is dedicated to conserving biodiversity, to enhancing knowledge of how to use natural resources sustainably over the long term, and to promoting environmentally sustainable economic growth benefiting those living in or near sensitive areas. Purpose
The area's exclusive focus is on dealing with the problems of endangered tropical ecosystems. These are the regions with the greatest degree of species diversity, but are also plagued by acute human poverty and are often experiencing rapid population growth.
