Sustainability in Conservation, IUCN, Gland (Switzerland), 1997. Beyond Fences is designed to help professionals involved in conservation initiatives to identify the social concerns that are relevant for their work, assess options for action and implement them. Volume 1 is a companion to a process of planning, evaluating or re-designing a conservation initiative; an experience of 'learning by doing' expected to involve a series of meetings and field-based activities. Volume 2 is a reference book to be consulted, as needed, at various stages in the same process. To make it easier to navigate this document is broken down into a number of separate HTML pages. Just use the CONTENTS links below to visit a particular page, or you can use the links provided to browse from one section to the next. However, Beyond Fences is not meant to be read from start to finish. The first volume is a companion to a process, and is meant to be used following the requirements of the process itself. It is not a guide and does not spell out step-by-step procedures. The second is a reference resource, to be consulted on specific items as needs arise. A number of internal links are provided so that the volumes can be used in tandem. Transit Access
The car, directly and indirectly, accounts for about one-seventh of the U.S. GNP. It requires a vast and costly infrastructure of roads and asphalt, which is heavily subsidized by taxpayers. It leaves fragmented communities, degraded habitat, an altered global climate, smog, wasted time from traffic congestion, and much else in its wake. The car also offers a remarkable level of personal independence and convenience, making people reluctant to try alternatives.
On this site, fifty-seven patterns provide a framework for an ecologically restorative, socially just, and reliably prosperous society. They are adaptable to local ecosystems and cultures, yet universal in their applicability. Together they form what we call a Conservation Economy Together, the patterns form a visual and conceptual framework that can be used to inspire innovation, focus planning efforts, and document emerging best practices. A conservation economy comprehensively integrates Social Natural , and Economic Capital to demonstrate that a sustainable society is both desirable and achievable.

http://www.iwla.org/SOS/handbook/intro.html
Handbook for Wetlands Conservation and Sustainability:
Introduction Wetlands have been central to the League’s dedication to clean water and wildlife throughout the League’s history. The Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) was formed in 1922 by 54 anglers who banded together to save the Mississippi River. Wetlands have been central to the League’s dedication to clean water and wildlife throughout the League’s history. In 1923, one of its first victories was the establishment of the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 300 miles of the river. This refuge protects all bottomlands from drainage from Lake Pepin, Minn. to Rock Island, Ill. In 1924, League members identified water pollution, deforestation and wetlands drainage as the most pressing issues facing the country. During the last 76 years, the IWLA has worked at the national level to create legislation to protect wetlands and at the local level through the League’s 350 chapters. In the past, most of the League’s educational materials about wetlands have focused on regulatory avenues for wetlands conservation. It is now apparent that legal avenues alone will not protect wetlands as urban sprawl and development engulf our nation’s natural areas. The "Handbook for Wetlands Conservation and Sustainability" was created as part of the wetlands education initiative started by the League’s Save Our Streams (SOS) Program to help people become wetland stewards by learning about wetland ecology, how wetlands function and what benefits they provide to society. The purpose of this handbook is not to produce wetland scientists but to provide basic information to people who do not have a background in science and to encourage them to consult with experts in the field.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this essay is to define and refine the concepts of stability and resilience and to demonstrate their value in understanding the behavior of exploited systems. Some ecological systems display several possible stable states. They may also show a hysteresis effect in which, even after a long time, the state of the system may be partly determined by its history. The concept of resilience depends upon our objectives, the types of disturbances that we anticipate, control measures that are available, and the time scale of interest. KEY WORDS: bifurcation; multiple stable states; resilience; stability.

Sustainability for the Planet: A Marketing Perspective

ABSTRACT
This perspective presents a case for environmental scientists to mobilize their communication efforts and to develop a systematic approach to marketing scientific knowledge to a range of key target audiences. Examples of environmental marketing are presented, and a call to action is presented in the spirit of discussion. KEY WORDS: marketing sustainability, perspective. Published June 30, 1999.
INTRODUCTION
Human behavior is influenced by a variety of communication media. However, mass marketing tools (such as advertising, public relations, and sales promotions) have become increasingly fundamental to our consumption-based culture (Leiss et al. 1990). Advertising, in particular, has evolved into a privileged form of discourse (Leiss et al. 1990): ads are everywhere. As a practitioner of consumer packaged goods marketing, I spent long hours developing and executing detailed marketing plans for such ignoble products as Dentyne chewing gum. As a researcher in marketing, I have studied how marketing vehicles such as advertising can create, influence and change target audience attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions. In a nutshell, marketing works. That's why corporations use it. A more interesting question is, how can scientists use it too?

Conservation and Sustainability
Objectives
  • To further the understanding and conservation of Australia's endemic insect and related arthropod fauna with special emphasis on rare and threatened species. To develop and provide molecular markers and diagnostic systems to support ecological studies and to establish phylogenies and predictive classifications of environmentally and economically important invertebrates. To further the understanding of the ecosystem services provided by invertebrates to agriculture, horticulture and natural ecosystems with an emphasis on implementing sustainable use and best practice management options
Description One focus of the project is an investigation of the effects of habitat fragmentation on the genetics and demographics of threatened invertebrate taxa. Data are being used to develop quantitative population viability models useful for predicting long term population persistence and assessing alternative management options. Tools for community assessment of invertebrate diversity for use as an indicator of habitat quality and assessment of restoration actions are being developed. WEB-based identification and analysis tools in conjunction with community based survey techniques are providing data on invertebrate diversity in a variety of river floodplain vegetation types. By using the assistance of school children this project actively seeks to promote environmental education to both primary and secondary school students.
