If you're here but expected to be at an acronym page please accept apologies. We've just reorganized all 900 or so pages in this section and could not redirect all the changes. Please just follow the alphabetical links to what you wanted. Thank you. A B C D ... Sym Computer acronyms and word definitions are in this section (definitions have just been added so there are not many just yet). An acronym shortens an often-used collection of words by, most often, making a "word" out of the first letters of the collection (e.g., AFAIK is an acronym for As Far As I Know). It's particularly irritating when you come across an acronym you have never seen before and the author assumes you already know it. When that happens, come here and see if we've expanded it for you. (Technically, an acronym is a "word" that one can pronounce made from the first letter(s) of a phrase; e.g., RAM for Random Access Memory. Combinations not pronounced are really abbreviations ; e.g., IBM for International Business Machines. For purposes of simplicity here we've combined the two under the acronym heading. You can tell the difference by looking at the pronunciation guide on each page. If it's pronounced like a word, it's an acronym; if it's just the letters repeated, it's an abbreviation.)
