Test Companies Lower 'Flags'
On College-Entrance Exams
August 7, 2002
By Lisa Fine Reprinted with permission Students with disabilities who need extra time when taking either of the nation's two major college-entrance exams will no longer be "flagged," beginning in the 2003-04 school year. Advocates for the disabled regard the practice as something of an academic scarlet letter. Under the practice, the score reports of students who received more time on the SAT have featured an asterisk indicating the tests were given through "nonstandard administration." But the College Board, which owns the SAT, agreed to end the practice under a July 15 settlement with advocates for people with disabilities and a man who objected having his score singled out in that manner. Immediately following the settlement, ACT officials, who flagged tests by marking them "special," said they were re-examining their own policies. Then, 11 days later, they decided to follow the SAT's lead and stop flagging scores. "We'd been watching the SAT situation for some time and had been evaluating our own policy," said Ken Gullette, an ACT spokesman, said last week. "We made our decision to end the practice. We are all in the business to make the tests as fair to everybody as we can."

By Seo Soo-min Staff Reporter South Korea's education system, in many foreigners' eyes, is a subject of wonder bordering on bewilderment. Few would understand the national obsessions with education reforms, college entrance test scores and the staggering amount of money people put into education. With the college entrance exam taking place today across the nation, eyes are set on the little- known education system of North Korea. As is the case in South Korea, competition among North Korean students aspiring to enter top-notch colleges is also fierce. The most decisive factor in getting into a good college is the scores they record on tests for recommendation into college, taken usually in October or November, five months before the beginning of the spring semester in April. Defectors from the North reported that while there are no cram schools in North Korea like in the South, students spend sleepless nights for the exams.

The School of Hotel Administration requires SAT I or ACT, SAT II required in Writing and in Math (any level) and the TOEFL. We realize that international students may be at some disadvantage in parts of these tests. We keep that in mind while reviewing your application. For application forms for the SAT I, the SAT II Subject Tests, and the ACT, check with your school counselor or write to the College Entrance Examination Board, Box 592, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA; or the American College Testing Program, P.O. Box 414, Iowa City, IA 52243, USA. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): If English is not your first language, you'll need to demonstrate your ability to read and write in English. (If you've taken the SAT I or SAT II Writing Test and scored 670 or above, you're exempted from this requirement.) Your score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); the required English teacher recommendation (Form 2F, included in the part 2 materials); your writing ability; and your coursework in English will help Cornell evaluate your skills.

PSAT/NMSQT
Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
Given in October to high school juniors. Similar format to the SAT I. Useful as an indicator of SAT scores and for test practice. The test acts as the basis of some merit scholarships. It is a source of many college mailings and contacts. Interested sophomores may also take the test as a practice exercise. A new PSAT will be administered for the first time in the fall of 2004. The changes to the PSAT/NMSQT will parallel some of the changes to the SAT I. However, there will be no essay. The new PSAT will be based on the principle of aligning the test more closely to high school curricula and college skills. Analogies and quantitative comparison items will be removed. The math content will not change.
SAT I
Scholastic Assessment Test
A three hours test in two sections measuring verbal and mathematical reasoning as it develops over time. Usually seven testing dates per year. Many competitive colleges and universities require the SAT I for admissions. A new SAT I will be administered for the first time in March 2005 affecting the class of 2006.

Applying to colleges during your senior year in high school requires students to have taken admissions tests. These are commonly known as the SAT and the ACT tests. These exams can be nerve recking, but they should not stop you from wanting to apply to college. The more you know about these exams, the better you will feel when you take the exam. These tests are not pass or fail; they measure what you have learned so far in school. And if you do not receive a high schore, it does not mean you will not be eligible for college nor that you will not graduate from college. But you want to do your best when you take them. The table below describes which admissions tests are for what system: UC CSU INDEPENDENT JC/CC ACT or SAT I ACT or SAT I ACT or SAT I (not requ ired) SAT II (three subjects where writing must be one) (SAT II not required SAT II required by some You should contact the university you are considering applying to so that they can relate to you their specific requirements.
