Registration will take place before school and during lunches from October 1 through October 11. The cost of the test is $15.00,payable by cash or check made out to Westwood High School. (Registration after October 11 will require a $15.00 late fee in addition to the $15.00 registration fee, and will be accepted only on a space-available basis.) College Entrance Exams Most colleges require an entrance test score. There are two major tests used for college entrance: the SAT and the ACT . Most colleges will accept either test; some colleges will accept only one of the two. It is important to consult the college catalog to determine which test you need. You are encouraged to take both. The SAT attempts to measure your ability to do college level work, reporting a verbal and math score. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800 with a composite score derived by adding the verbal and math scores. (The 2000 Westwood average score was 1137, while the Texas average was 993 and the national average was 1019.) The ACT attempts to measure specific knowledge in four areas: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. Each subtest yields a score of 1-36. A composite score is derived from averaging the four subtests and is reported on a scale of 1-36. (The 2000 Westwood average was 24.7, while the Texas average was 20.3 and the national average was 21.)

http://www.okcps.org/hs/northeast/college_entrance_exams.htm
College Entrance Exams Most high school students who are contemplating formal education beyond high school should participate in a program of standardized testing. Such testing is required by most colleges and universities as a factor for consideration in the admissions process. Also, students will find that the test results may give them some valuable information to use as they consider which institutions should warrant their consideration and perhaps their eventual application. If a student is unsure of his/her immediate plans following high school, he/she is still encouraged to participate in a standardized testing program. The results of such tests remain on file with the student’s records. College entrance tests are designed to measure a student’s ability to do college level work. By having a standardized set of test scores for every student applying to a college or university, the admissions professionals are able to compare students from different states, schools, and academic backgrounds. It is rare for any college to base its admission decisions solely on the results of the SAT or ACT scores. Decisions are made based on all the information available to a college including the high school transcript, teacher and counselor recommendations, personal statement, resume, interviews, and test scores. At each college, the weighing of these factors varies, but the high school record is almost always the most important single factor for consideration for admission.

cumulative knowledge – in other words, what the student brings with him or her from high school. But that isn’t all. The tests are also targeting deductive skills. For instance, both the ACT and the SAT sometimes give the test-taker answer choices for which the high school graduate is expected to understand all but one – the correct one. The idea is for the test-taker to use what is known to him or her about the other choices to eliminate them as correct answers. The answer left may be unfamiliar, but it is a logical choice because the student knows the others are definitely inappropriate. This type of skill comes from the use of deductive reasoning.

WAMC RADIO COMMENTARY - 5/12/97 - Candace de Russy, Ph.D. ‘TRANSLATED' COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS: ONE MORE BODY BLOW TO AMERICA'S SCHOOLS To survive in an English-speaking society, students of foreign background with a poor command of English urgently need to master English. PERIOD. In this they will be held back by a proposal just put forth by New York State's Education Commissioner, Richard Mills. Dr. Mills wants to offer the state's college-preparatory exams - known as Regents exams - in four foreign languages: Spanish, Haitian Creole, Russian and Chinese. These tests show how prepared high school students are for college and are used to award state-financed merit scholarships. To jumpstart his proposal - what we may call "translated testing - Dr. Mills plans this fall to offer glossaries for Regents' math, not in four, but in nine languages. In addition to those already mentioned, students will also be able to work out math problems math in Korean, Bengali, Burmese, Vietnamese and Urdu. Translated testing is an old "bad idea" in New York State. The state has long permitted students to take so-called "competency" exams in 30 languages. (To his credit, Dr. Mills is phasing out these outrageously weak - academically weak - tests. Instead, in order to graduate from the state's high schools, he wants students to pass the more rigourous - although, frankly, not rigorous enough - Regents exams.)

Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) The SAT scores are used as a college admission requirement and student placement instrument. SAT scores provide colleges with a way to compare academic preparation and abilities of students who apply for admission. SAT, when used in conjunction with high school grades and class rank, serves as a good predicator of academic success in the first year of college. DANTES funds one administration at a DANTES Test Center, for eligible military service members, on either the SAT or the ACT Assessment. Because the SAT program does not score SATs in July and August, DANTES strongly recommends DANTES Test Centers do not schedule SAT administrations in July and August. We recommend that you use the ACT during this period. For additional information about testing at DANTES Test Centers see your education advisor. Education China Holds Spring College Entrance Exams
China launched its spring college entrance exam as part of the Ministry of Education's attempt to increase college enrollment on January 19. This three-day event marks the start of a new era in the country's national college entrance testing, which traditionally has been held only once annually in July. "I failed last year's college entrance test, but now I have a chance to try again only a few months later," said Shi Dawei, a Beijing middle school student who just completed the first day of the testing. China has always held the national examination from July 7-9, and students who failed it had to wait until the following July to try again. Starting this year, the country will hold a spring college enrollment exam. But in this first year, only students in municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai and Anhui Province will be permitted to take part. Some 1,700 students from Beijing and more than 6,100 from Anhui Province in east China will be enrolled, an official with the Ministry of Education said.

College Entrance Exams Students in our area take one of four exams to get into college. The following is a brief explanation to help students. The College Board makes both the SAT and the PSAT/NMSQT test. You have taken this test in your sophomore or junior year. The PSAT/NMSQT is used by colleges to award scholarships but not for admission and is divided into three areas: Math, Verbal and Written. These scores range from 200 to 800. The average combined score in Washington last year was 1050. In the nation it was 902. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600. The test is given seven times a year on Saturdays at various high schools and takes 3 hours. You can take the test as many times as you want, but most students take their first test in the spring of their junior year. Most colleges will accept the best combined score of a single testing session. You should consider taking the SAT test if *You are going to start at a four-year college in Washington State.

Problem-solving and reasoning comprise the core of both tests. The college counseling office and the computer lab provide materials which should help students become familiar with the tests. 1. PSAT/NMSQT - Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (College Board Test Program) Given in October (during school hours at SPA) to Sophomores and Juniors. Same format as SAT I: Reasoning Test. Useful as an indicator of probable SAT I scores and/or test practice. The junior score also is the basis for selection for some merit scholarships including the National Merit Program. All juniors who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for National Merit Scholarships. Semi-finalists are notified in the fall of their senior year. Students may elect to have their scores and other information shared with colleges to obtain college brochures and information. PSAT scores are not part of the college application. 2.
